Chapter 20 A Twisted Fate

Li Chang'an couldn't figure out the key to this, so he put the beads back on the table. Sure enough, the beads seemed to turn into ordinary ice and began to melt slowly as soon as they were on the table.

Snap—

With a slight cracking sound, all the beads broke apart, turning into a small pile of shattered ice shards, which quickly melted into water.

Li Chang'an didn't expect it to happen so quickly. She couldn't help but regret that the item was gone before she could examine it properly. She also guessed that the beads she hadn't picked up from the ground must have turned into water long ago, so she had no choice but to give up.

"Chang'an, you're walking so fast..."

Before even seeing him, Li Chang'an felt irritated just by hearing his voice. He thought to himself, "This Feng Beichuan is like a ghost, always haunting me!"

Feng Beichuan walked in, fanning himself, and then naturally moved closer, complaining incessantly: "You didn't even wait for me. I searched for ages. All the tents here look the same. Aren't you afraid of going into the wrong place?"

This guy is really outgoing!

Li Chang'an was speechless for a moment. How could he act like he was at home wherever he went? His skin was thicker than a city wall!

Regardless of the other person's attitude, Feng Beichuan found a place to sit down and poured two cups of tea for them. He placed one cup in front of Li Chang'an and took a sip of the other cup himself.

"This tea, tsk, it's not good." Feng Beichuan actually started to taste the tea seriously, shaking his head as he spoke. "I'll bring you some of this year's newly arrived pre-rain Longjing tea from the manor another day."

I never imagined that Li Chang'an's life in the army was so rough. She was a princess, after all. Not only did she not have a maidservant by her side, but even her most basic food and drink were so casual.

My heart aches!

Feng Beichuan thought to himself that he had to work harder to save Li Chang'an from these miserable days. If she became his regent, he would never let her continue to march and fight like this, living a life of hardship and sleeping in the open.

"If Your Highness has nothing else, please hurry back. I imagine there are a lot of matters in the court and the Prince's residence that require your attention. I am not a free person either, and I really have no time to entertain you."

Li Chang'an's lukewarm words made Feng Beichuan feel very uncomfortable. Although it seemed to be the first time she had said so much to him at once, why didn't he feel happy?

Thinking back, although she used to be very sparing with her words, she would at least get angry and scold me a couple of times. Now that she's suddenly being so polite, it feels a bit distant.

Feng Beichuan was unaware that if Li Chang'an found out about his thoughts, he would definitely be scolded, after all, human nature is inherently base!

"Don't rush to see me off. I've come here specifically to thank you."

Li Chang'an was both amused and exasperated by these words. Show him off? How dare he call himself a guest?

"I am truly grateful to Her Highness for actively protecting me and helping me out of this predicament."

Looking at the woman's somewhat stiff expression, Feng Beichuan continued with deep affection, "I have always firmly believed that sincerity can move mountains, and I am deeply moved even by such a small amount of concern from Your Highness."

Li Chang'an was stunned on the spot. This guy really thought too highly of himself!

Regardless of whether the other party responded, Feng Beichuan continued to speak eloquently, expressing his complex feelings. When he got excited, he suddenly slammed his hand on the table and said, "I have decided to add another 100,000 gold coins to the betrothal gift for Your Highness!"

"roll!"

Li Chang'an finally reached his breaking point.

Hearing that familiar tone of voice, Feng Beichuan finally felt a little more at ease. He grinned and winked at the woman with the livid face, "Wait for me to come back!"

My God, what a terrible tragedy!

Feng Beichuan returned to the Regent's Palace with a beaming smile. As soon as he entered, he busied himself with instructing the servants to quickly prepare a dowry of 100,000 taels of gold. Everyone looked at each other, wondering what madness their prince was going through this time.

"Another dowry?"

Cangyun, who had just returned, was surprised to see the servants bustling around the courtyard. After asking a maid, she learned that it was Feng Beichuan's order. She couldn't help but gasp. The betrothal gifts she had prepared were already almost half of the national treasury, and they still wanted to add more?

If this gets out, I wonder how many malicious people will criticize Feng Beichuan for such a grand gesture.

After finally calming down, Li Chang'an sorted out his thoughts and prepared to invite several important generals to discuss important matters.

Because the emperor had already developed a distrust of her, Li Chang'an felt that she could not stay in the military camp and wait for her death. Moreover, what the emperor feared most was the army under her command and the prestige she had painstakingly built up in the hearts of the people over the years.

Soon, the generals gathered in the tent where they usually discussed matters.

After briefly explaining the current situation, Li Chang'an told everyone that she might have to leave for a while. However, in order to stabilize morale, she did not mention the emperor's displeasure with her, but only said that she wanted to hear everyone's opinions before making arrangements.

After everyone pondered for a moment, some people began to offer their own ideas.

"General, something terrible has happened! The Regent is here again!"

A soldier suddenly burst into the tent, shouting in a panic, "The Regent has come to propose marriage again!"

This is utterly ridiculous!

Because his important business was interrupted by this uninvited guest, Li Chang'an was immediately enraged. He picked up his sword and walked out, his whole body filled with hostility. The generals looked at each other, none of them daring to speak.

It seems that this treacherous scoundrel is in for a lot of trouble today!

Sure enough, not long after they stepped outside, Li Chang'an saw a large procession. At the head of the procession, sitting high on horseback, was Feng Beichuan. Behind him, many of his followers were carrying wooden boxes, each tied with a crimson ribbon.

With a sharp crack, a streak of silver light flew past, hurtling swiftly and fiercely toward Feng Beichuan.

Clearly not expecting such a gift right after entering the arena, Feng Beichuan was unable to dodge and fell straight off his horse, instantly becoming covered in dust and dirt.

Another muffled thud was heard—the sound of metal piercing wood. The dagger that Li Chang'an had thrown had now accurately pierced the wooden load carried by the two attendants in the back row.

The two men immediately felt a dampness on their backs and a chill ran through them.

"Cough cough cough..."

Feng Beichuan fell flat on his face, getting a mouthful of dirt, but he didn't seem to care about the embarrassment. He got up without batting an eye, dusted himself off, and acted as if he were the one who had just made a fool of himself.

The attendants following behind were terrified. They didn't dare to breathe, thinking that if their prince had been even a fraction later, his head would probably have been chopped off in half.

"I keep my word. These are the newly prepared betrothal gifts that I brought especially for Your Highness to see."

With a wave of his hand, the attendants behind him quickly placed the boxes they were carrying on the ground. Feng Beichuan walked towards Li Chang'an with a smile, then took out a stack of papers from his robes. "These are all deeds to houses and land. My ten thousand acres of fertile land and dozens of mansions are all yours..."

Grasping the hilt of his sword, Li Chang'an's previously lowered eyes suddenly revealed a murderous intent!
