Chapter 52 A Smiling Face

After thinking for a moment, Li Chang'an decided to go to the Prime Minister's residence alone, while Feng Beichuan and Zhao Caishou waited in a secluded spot outside to see if the person delivering the item was among those entering and leaving the residence.

Although he was reluctant to stay outside with Zhao Cai, Feng Beichuan had to admit that Li Chang'an's idea was indeed reasonable, so he had no choice but to do as he was told.

Just to be on the safe side, Li Chang'an asked Zhao Cai in detail about the appearance and build of the person who delivered the item to him before going in, planning to keep an eye on him once he went inside.

No wonder Zhao Cai was so confident in his memory; he could even tell which parts of the other person's face had moles. With such obvious physical characteristics, it would be much easier to find the person.

After carefully memorizing the man's appearance, Li Chang'an went to knock on the door of the Prime Minister's residence. Soon the door opened, and a servant poked his head out. Upon seeing Li Chang'an, the servant asked about the man's identity.

After a brief self-introduction, Li Chang'an showed the other party his palace access pass, and then explained his purpose: "I have important business with the Prime Minister, please inform him."

After saying that, Li Chang'an quickly looked the person in front of him up and down, and felt a little disappointed. This person did not match the person Zhao Cai had described.

At this moment, Bai Yuanshan was practicing calligraphy in his study. He was so angry about what happened at the morning court session that he needed to do something to calm himself down.

What is she doing here?

Upon hearing the servant's announcement, Bai Yuanshan's expression darkened, and he angrily slammed his ivory brush heavily onto the Xuan paper.

In an instant, a patch of pitch-black ink smeared onto the Xuan paper, with specks of black ink splashing around it, creating an extremely discordant scene on the clean Xuan paper.

"If you don't want to see me, just say I've left the residence on business."

Bai Yuanshan frowned and waved his hand, his tone extremely impatient.

"But she said she had something important to give to the Prime Minister, and she repeatedly told me to make sure to deliver the message."

Seeing this, the servant reluctantly relayed Li Chang'an's words in their entirety.

After hearing these words, Bai Yuanshan couldn't help but feel suspicious, but out of curiosity, he had no choice but to ask his servant to invite the person in first.

Before long, Li Chang'an was led to the reception room, where Bai Yuanshan was playing with a caged canary while waiting for the distinguished guest to arrive.

Bai Yuanshan wondered to himself what Li Chang'an was up to, growing increasingly curious to see what tricks the woman was up to.

"Greetings, Your Excellency the Prime Minister."

Li Chang'an was quite polite when he met Bai Yunshan, a stark contrast to the sharp-tongued woman he had encountered in the court.

Seeing the visitor's poised and generous demeanor, Bai Yuanshan was somewhat surprised, but he quickly regained his composure and exchanged a few polite greetings with him.

"I wonder what Your Highness intends to give..."

“I must apologize to the Prime Minister.” Li Chang’an interrupted Bai Yuanshan first, saying, “The matter at the morning court was due to my men’s lack of manners and their offense against the Prime Minister. Please forgive them.”

As Li Chang'an rambled on, she secretly breathed a sigh of relief. If she hadn't interrupted the old fox like that, she wouldn't have been able to explain herself when he asked what she was supposed to give him.

After all, he hadn't prepared anything for the old man.

From the very beginning, Li Chang'an knew that Bai Yuanshan would not let him in easily, so he came up with that excuse on the spot and prepared to take a gamble. Unexpectedly, this psychological tactic actually worked.

Bai Yuanshan could only force a smile and play along with Li Chang'an, but he was becoming increasingly unsure of the purpose behind this man's sudden visit.

Could it be that something went wrong with that matter, and she noticed something?

Thinking of this, Bai Yuanshan suddenly felt a tightness in his chest. However, he quickly dismissed the idea, since he never had to worry about the people under his command, and the plan was so meticulous that there shouldn't be any problems.

Bai Yuanshan secretly breathed a sigh of relief. He wanted to ask Li Chang'an why he had come to see him, but the other party kept rambling on and on, not giving him a chance to bring up the matter.

Bai Yuanshan was getting impatient. He had no time to listen to Li Chang'an's nonsense. So he tried to find an excuse to send his guest away. Li Chang'an seemed to have seen through his thoughts and suddenly changed the subject, saying, "I have heard that the Prime Minister's calligraphy is unparalleled in the capital. I would like to come and see it today. I wonder if the Prime Minister would do me the honor?"

Having finally revealed her ultimate goal, Li Chang'an couldn't help but feel a little nervous. She clenched her fists secretly, knowing that success or failure hinged on this moment. If the old man was unwilling, then all her idle chatter with him would have been in vain.

Bai Yuanshan was clearly surprised that Li Chang'an would suddenly make such a request, and couldn't help but wonder about her motives. Just as she was hesitating, she heard Li Chang'an say again, "Firstly, I want to see the Prime Minister's calligraphy skills, and secondly, I would like you to help me write a character for longevity so that I can frame it and present it to my father. It would be a way of offering something in return."

Seeing Li Chang'an's earnest expression, Bai Yuanshan felt a little relieved. He finally understood her little scheme. So this was her purpose—to please her emperor father. She probably wanted to make her future life easier, which is why she resorted to this tactic!

Bai Yuanshan scoffed at this; women's thoughts were indeed simple!

If a piece of calligraphy could resolve a crisis, then he wouldn't need to rack his brains every day over matters of the court; he could simply spend his days writing with a pen and paper.

Despite his inner thoughts, Bai Yuanshan maintained a smiling face. He exchanged a few polite words with Li Chang'an, praising her filial piety towards her elders. After some more insincere pleasantries, Li Chang'an said, "I wonder if the Prime Minister can expedite the calligraphy matter? I consulted a master who said that the mounting must be done on an auspicious day for it to be effective. Thank you for your help, Prime Minister!"

Seeing the woman's troubled and anxious expression, Bai Yuanshan couldn't help but laugh at her in his heart. He began to wonder how such a fool could have risen to the rank of general in the army. She actually believed in these auspicious days and dates. How could such a person be qualified to discuss politics in the court? It was utterly ridiculous!

"Of course, that's no problem. How about this, Your Highness, if you don't mind, come with me to the study, and I can write the calligraphy for you right now."

Bai Yuanshan was naturally happy to play the good guy, and it was rare to encounter someone so brainless that he could give them a push.
