Chapter 6 Rong City

Although she wanted to lie down, Su Ting couldn't do it completely. She was the kind of person who always liked to be prepared for danger and always liked to leave a way out for herself.

But these jobs on the island were obviously hopeless, so she had to find another way.

Su Ting was thinking about the skills she had.

She knows a lot. She learned piano and ballet when she was young, but she didn't continue practicing. The only thing she persisted in for more than ten years is painting.

She also studied painting in college, but later due to family changes and financial difficulties, she accidentally entered the advertising industry and painting was put on hold.

When it comes to painting, it's okay to stop for two or three days, but after two or three weeks you'll noticeably start to feel unfamiliar with it, but she stopped for two or three years. Plus, she no longer had the mindset she had when she first entered college, so the things she drew didn't look right.

After realizing that she could never go back, Su Ting was depressed for a while, but she did not give up completely. She cheered herself up, opened an account and drew things online.

At first, her drawings were quite miscellaneous, basically for her own amusement. Gradually, fans asked her to draw portraits of their idols. She tried to take on some commercial work, and later began to record her life in the form of comic strips.

However, due to her busy work, she could not update more than twice a month, so her comics were not very popular in the first few years and did not make as much money as commercial works.

It was not until last year when a big V reposted her comic and linked it to a hot topic at the time that she became an overnight sensation and had her first publication.

The down payment for the house she bought before she traveled through time was paid with royalties.

After the house was delivered and renovated this year, she was planning to quit her job and become a freelancer as her sideline income was gradually becoming stable. However, before she could submit her resignation report, she was transported back to the 1970s.

It hurts to think about it!

But life has to go on, Su Ting sighed and continued to make plans in her mind.

There's no hope that she'll be able to master the piano and ballet with the skills she has. Not to mention whether playing the piano and dancing ballet is considered hipster in this day and age, she's forgotten all about the fingering movements after not practicing them for so many years.

There is not much hope for the main business of advertising design. There is no such fancy work in this era. The publicity department can only draw posters and write slogans at most.

She was good at drawing posters, but the propaganda department of the army was full of soldiers, so she was not qualified for the job. The Women's Federation also had people doing propaganda, but it was one of the most difficult units to get into in the family home, so she was not qualified for the job.

After much thought, I decided to go back to my old job of drawing comics.

The inspiration came to her while she was having breakfast. When she saw the children coming and going in the cafeteria, she suddenly remembered that comic books were popular in that era.

Although strictly speaking, comics and manga are not the same art form, they share the same origin. She has a foundation in painting and has published comics in her previous life, so it should be easier for her to start drawing comics in this life.

But this idea was not mature yet. If she really wanted to do it, she would have to go to the market first, buy some painting supplies, and also buy a few comic books to study.

If you want to do it, just do it. After dinner that night, Su Ting told He Yan that she would take him to the city to play on Sunday, which was the next day.

In Su Ting's impression, children should be happy when they know they can go out and play. When she was a child, she always looked forward to her father taking her to the playground.

But He Yan's reaction was unexpected.

Not only was he not happy, his eyes quickly turned red. He tried to stare at her with his eyes wide open and said loudly, "I'm not going!"

Su Ting was puzzled and said, "If you don't want to go, then don't go. Why are you so angry?"

He Yan was stunned, his face showing hesitation, but he straightened up after a while and said with full energy: "You don't want me anymore, why can't I be angry? I am angry! I am angry! I am angry!"

The boy kept shouting louder and louder. Su Ting couldn't help but cover her ears with her hands. She waited until he calmed down before asking, "When did I say I didn't want you anymore?"

"You still don't admit it!"

He Yan's eyes turned redder with grievance, tears welled up in his eyes, but he was too stubborn to let them fall out. He choked and said, "You were the one who said this morning that the bad guy asked you to take me outside and throw me away!"

Su Ting was stunned, and it took her a while to figure out his logic: "Do you think I took you to the city to play because I wanted to take the opportunity to abandon you?"

He Yan stiffened his neck and asked, "Isn't it?"

"Of course not! If I take you to the city and throw you away, will I go to jail? I'm not stupid. I'm living a good life now, why would I commit suicide and end up in jail?"

He Yan didn't quite understand what jail and prison meant, but from Su Ting's words, he could probably guess that these two words were not good things. He was relieved immediately, but he was a little confused: "Why would that bad guy let you throw me away?"

Although Yu Hongzhi didn't say such a thing, Su Ting had no pressure in framing her. She said calmly, "She just can't stand seeing people doing well. Anyway, even if I really believed her and threw you away, I would be the one going to jail, and she wouldn't lose anything."

He Yan frowned: "She is so bad!"

"So, in order to live a good life in the future, I will never, ever do anything illegal, and you don't have to worry that I will abandon you or abuse you." Su Ting couldn't help laughing as she spoke, "You don't have a big brain, but you think a lot."

He Yan knew that he had misunderstood her. He felt guilty and blushed when he heard this: "If you hadn't said this in front of me, I wouldn't have thought so much!"

"Yes, yes, yes," Su Ting said in a low voice, "but it's a good thing that you think so much, so you won't be easily deceived in the future. Well, now that we've talked about it, are you willing to go to the city with me tomorrow?"

He Yan was a little hesitant.

Although he believed what Su Ting said, he didn't dare to go to the city with her.

But he was unwilling to admit that he was scared, so he had to bite the bullet and ask, "What fun things are there in the city?"

Although Su Ting had traveled to Fujian in her previous life, she went to a tourist city and only transited in Rong City.

Moreover, novels are somewhat fictional. At least she was sure that there was no island with the same name as Pingchuan Island in her previous life, so she really had no idea what fun there was in Rong City in the 1970s.

I can only guess: "There should be food and maybe places to play, but I have to go to the bookstore, so I may not have time to take you out to play. At most, we can have a meal together."

It doesn't seem very attractive.

He Yan thought about it and asked, "Then can I not go?"

Su Ting saw his hesitation but didn't expose it. She was the one who scared him first, so it was normal for him to be afraid to go out. She said straightforwardly, "Then you should stay at home tomorrow and don't run around."

He Yan breathed a sigh of relief, then remembered to ask, "Can you go alone?"

"Of course, it would be more troublesome if I bring you along." Su Ting said bluntly.

He Yan: “…”Okay.

Pingchuan Island is not large, but it has many docks, some for military use and some for civilian use. The latter is further divided into the ferry dock to the city and the dock for fishermen to go out to sea.

Su Ting was going to the ferry terminal, which was not far from her family compound and took her about twenty minutes to walk there.

The pier is not very big, just a long embankment with a fence at the entrance. Next to the fence is a house which is the ticket window.

Today is Sunday, and there are many people at the pier. There is a queue at the window. Su Ting waited for seven or eight minutes before she bought a ticket. The ticket price is not expensive, 20 cents one way, and the ferry takes about 20 minutes.

Su Ting noticed that in addition to selling one-way tickets, the window also sold monthly tickets, which cost three yuan each and allowed unlimited ferry rides.

It is said that this is for the convenience of residents who live on the island and work in the city, but Su Ting suspects that few people buy monthly passes. You know, renting a single room these days is only two or three yuan, which is much cheaper than a boat ticket, and you don’t have to go back and forth every day, but there are few rental places on the market, and it is hard to find vacancies.

Just as I was thinking about it, the ferry came closer with a humming sound and soon docked at the shore.

The gate opened, and the people on the boat went down, while the people queuing by the gate swarmed up.

There was nothing to squeeze into. The ferry looked small, but there were a lot of seats. After everyone boarded, there was still a third of the seats empty. When the boat left, many people went onto the deck, and there were a lot of empty seats again.

The weather is good today, the sea is calm and the boat is sailing smoothly.

More than half an hour later, the ferry docked. Su Ting got off the boat and walked out of the pier. After asking the locals, she took the bus to her destination, which took another ten minutes.

Su Ting boarded the ship at eight o'clock. During the trip, she changed from the ship to the bus, and with the waiting time, it was almost nine o'clock when she arrived at Xinhua Bookstore.

Seeing the familiar sign of Xinhua Bookstore, Su Ting felt much more at ease. She was afraid that this world was too empty and that the existence of many things in the real world would be erased.

It's okay.

Su Ting walked into the Xinhua Bookstore. It was a little bigger than she had imagined. There were rows of bookshelves arranged vertically and horizontally, and the shelves were filled with a wide variety of books.

There were not many customers, and some were standing in front of the bookshelves reading books.

However, there were quite a few people in front of the white comic bookshelf, and at a glance, they were all children in their teens. This was convenient for Su Ting, as she didn't have to wander around like a headless fly.

Su Ting walked straight over and found the issue of "Comic Book" in front of the middle row of bookshelves.

Although comic strips were popular at that time, there were not many related magazines. The most famous one was "Lianhuan Huabao", which was a national magazine and the most common comic strip magazine on bookshelves.

Then there is the Workers, Peasants and Soldiers Pictorial, a local magazine that is available in almost every province and can be found in a variety of formats on the bookshelf.

The price of picture magazines is not expensive, only 20 cents per copy, and no ticket is required.

Su Ting bought the magazines in order to contribute to them, so she bought at least two, whether they were famous or not.

The most purchased item was the Comic Book, a total of six copies. She planned to focus on studying this magazine and submit it here first, but would consider the others later.

After choosing the magazines, Su Ting walked around again. Since she didn't see any sketch paper and pens on display, she asked the salesperson while checking out.

The salesperson's attitude was not very good, and his tone was stern: "What do you want sketch paper and pen for?"

"draw."

"Can you draw?" The salesperson looked up at Su Ting, his eyes full of disbelief.

Su Ting was speechless: "Does it matter to you whether I can draw or not? Can't you just tell me if I have any to sell?"

"What's wrong with you, little girl? I just asked a few more questions, why are you so aggressive?" The salesperson said coldly, "You want to buy paper and pens? I'm telling you right now, we don't have any!"

"Are you sure you didn't?"

Salespeople these days have a golden rice bowl, and they are all very arrogant. She was not afraid of Su Ting. She raised her chin, squinted her eyes and lied, "No!"

Su Ting turned to another salesperson and asked, "Is your leader here?"

"Do you want to see our leader?" the other party asked.

“Yes.”

"Why do you want to see our leader?"

Su Ting pointed to the slogan "Serve the People" on the wall and said, "I want to ask you leaders, are the slogans on the wall just for show? Why don't I see any intention of serving working people like me from your salespersons?"

The salesperson looked Su Ting up and down, rolled his eyes and said, "You're the only one who wants to labor the people?"

Su Ting asked in return: "My ancestors were all poor farmers for eight generations, and I was also an educated youth sent to the countryside. If I am not a working class, then what am I?"

The man wanted to say more, but his colleague pulled him back and said in a low voice, "Alright, less trouble is worse than more. Do you really want to make trouble to the director?"

"Let her make trouble, do you think I'm afraid of her?" Anyway, the director couldn't fire her even if he knew, so she was not afraid.

"The director can't fire you, but can he punish you?"

The punishment was not serious. The salary of a salesperson was no different from other jobs. It was basically fixed. It would remain the same after one year of employment and ten years later, unless she could be promoted to a leadership position.

But she is already in her forties, and she is sloppy at work, so it is almost impossible for her to get promoted. Therefore, the punishment will have almost no impact on her.

It's just that it's not nice to tell others about this disciplinary action, it's embarrassing.

Seeing her hesitation, the colleague said, "Just listen to the side and I'll deal with this person." Then he turned around and smiled at Su Ting, "Comrade, my colleague was wrong just now. Actually, she encountered something today and was in a bad mood. I apologize to you on her behalf."

Actually, Su Ting didn't want to cause trouble, but she was angry because the man was too rude and said something that made her angry. Now, she softened her tone and said, "I didn't mean to cause trouble to her. I just wanted to buy something. But she asked me all kinds of questions. If you don't know, you would think she was interrogating a prisoner."

"She's wrong about this. I promise to tell her later!" The other party nodded in agreement, took out two stacks of paper and several boxes of sketch pens from under the counter, and changed the subject, "We have two kinds of paper here, and pens of different thicknesses. Which one do you want?"

Since she was a more understanding person, Su Ting didn't want to make things difficult for her, so she bought 25 sheets of each type of paper, two pens of different thicknesses, and some utility knives and erasers.

She didn't notice it while she was choosing, but after paying and picking up the bundle of hemp rope, Su Ting realized that she had bought a lot of things.

So heavy!
