Chapter 18
"Bai...Bai Di...Hello..."
A timid voice came from the back seat. Bai Nan turned her head and replied, "Hmm?"
"Um, I'm in 401 too..."
He pointed to a name on the dormitory assignment list and said it in a low voice.
"Oh, so your name is Huang Wang. Hello, hello, my name is Bai Lu." Bai Lu warmly put his hand on his shoulder.
"Hello, Bai Lu..."
He was clearly struggling to handle overly enthusiastic people.
Upon hearing Huang Wang's name, the eldest sister turned around and said, "So you're the second one! I've been asking you questions for ages, and you just wouldn't tell me your name!"
Then, smiling, she said, "My name is Chen Shu! You can call me Shushu!"
The atmosphere suddenly became eerie.
Although she hadn't done anything particularly outrageous, they had never met a girl as flamboyant and domineering as her before, and they were unsure how to treat her.
"Hello, Shushu, my name is Bai Di."
Bai Nan, however, had no prejudice against her and was the first to reply to her.
Actually, she quite admired people like Chen Shu, who were free-spirited, easygoing, and generous, clearly having grown up in a loving family.
Bai Lu replied as well, but only after Huang Wang also quietly greeted him did he suddenly realize what was going on.
"Wow! You're Chen Shu?!"
Some sharp-eared students got excited when they heard the name: "Who is Chen Shu?! Which one is Chen Shu?!"
Just then, Teacher Zeng finished her work and led the remaining students into the classroom.
"Just put your things next to the podium."
Then she excitedly said:
"I just heard you call Chen Shu's name. Since the whole class is here, let's give a warm welcome to the top student in the grade! Chen Shu! Stand up!"
Fortunately, Chen Shu had already spat out her chewing gum, otherwise she would have been in serious trouble.
Under the enthusiastic gazes of Teacher Zeng and her classmates, she slowly stood up, and Bai Lu clapped the most enthusiastically among them.
"Hello everyone, I'm Chen Shu." She said calmly, as this was the treatment she had always received since childhood.
"Alright, now that we've paid our respects to the top student in the grade, let's start with introductions. Let's begin with the row closest to the aisle."
Ms. Zeng is a very organized teacher. After guiding the students to introduce themselves, she began to organize the selection of class officers.
Bai Nan, needless to say, is a man of few words and no one chose him.
Bai Lu was quite popular and ended up as an official in the Youth League Committee.
Many people originally wanted to elect Chen Shu as class monitor, but after a brief interaction, they realized that this girl is a restless person. She can fly if no one is in charge of her. If she were to become class monitor, who knows what kind of chaos the class would become.
So, like Bai Nan, she was an ordinary citizen.
However, Teacher Zeng kept her word. She said she would let the students choose for themselves, and she really didn't interfere with any further arrangements.
After a morning of work, all the class officers, including the class monitor, vice class monitor, academic representative, discipline representative, and Youth League member, were finally elected.
There are forty people in the class, and class officers alone make up more than a quarter of them. This doesn't even include dormitory heads, student council members, clubs, and other organizations. It's estimated that everyone except Bai Di and Huang Wang will be able to get a position.
It's because these two didn't say as much as Chen Shu did all morning.
Before 10 o'clock, Class 1 of Grade 11 had completed all the tasks to be done, demonstrating extremely high efficiency.
Teacher Zeng expressed his satisfaction and gave them a half-day off, leaving them to arrange their own time in the afternoon.
Chen Shu is straightforward and makes friends quickly. In just half a morning, several girls had already formed a group with her.
They were discussing going to the administration building to get their meal cards and take a stroll around the campus. Bai Nan really wanted to join them, but she was currently a boy.
"Bai, Bai Di, would you like to go to the library? I heard they have a huge collection of books that you can't buy anywhere else..."
Huang Wang mustered his courage and patted Bai Nan on the shoulder. His voice was still very soft, but his eyes were bright, and he seemed to be in a good mood.
Some timid and insecure people do want to stay in a quiet place when they first arrive in a new environment. Bai Nan was like that when she was a child.
Since she had no plans for the afternoon, she nodded to him.
The two walked side by side on the tree-lined path. Bai Di was about 1.7 meters tall, while Huang Wang was slightly taller, but he always subconsciously hunched his shoulders, so the two looked about the same height.
Bai Nan took out his phone from his pocket. Today was the first day of reporting for duty. Teacher Zeng said that they wouldn't collect the phones yet, and that they could put them in the dormitory after the military training.
She wondered where Bai Lu had gone. Perhaps he had gone to find Bai Di? She was thinking of contacting Bai Di to see how he was adjusting...
Hopefully, Li Ling isn't that vigilant.
Bai Nan, preoccupied with her worries, was completely unaware of the glances Huang Wang occasionally stole at her, which revealed obvious joy.
Huang Wang: "We've arrived."
Bai Nan snapped back to reality. "Oh, okay, let's go in."
She put her phone on silent and put it in her pocket.
There weren't many people in the library; most of them were high school sophomores in school uniforms who usually came here to study during their lunch break.
Occasionally, you can see a few students in their senior year uniforms scattered around the electronic reading room on the first floor, usually using computers to look up information from outside the school.
After looking around, Bai Nan realized that seeing the campus he had spent two years in from the perspective of a first-year high school student was completely different.
Even a small library is like a treasure trove.
"Bai Di!" Huang Wang walked into the electronic reading room, pointed to an empty computer, and asked in a low voice, "Does this require a student ID card?"
Bai Di nodded and sat down at the machine next to him.
The card is a meal card, but I haven't loaded any money into it yet, so I can't use it for now.
However, she had stayed for two years, so she naturally had other options.
"Click here to access the backend management system, then enter your student ID to start paying on credit."
She taught Huang Wang how to 'cheate,' though it wasn't really cheating. After all, the cost would still be deducted when he swiped his student card later, otherwise the borrowing system wouldn't work.
However, if she occasionally forgets her meal card or is really short of money, she will use this method to pay in advance and then come back to swipe the card when she has money in it next time.
"Wow! You even know that?" Huang Wang exclaimed with admiration.
This made Bai Nan a little embarrassed. It would be quite awkward for an older student to pretend to be a new student. Without a bit of shamelessness, one would actually blush.
She waved her hand: "I heard it from someone else."
"Brother Xin, why did you stop?"
Bai Lu followed Xu Xin's gaze and found that the direction was the electronic reading room on the first floor.
He immediately leaned over the second-floor railing and peered down: "Where? Where is the gossip?"
Xu Xin looked away: "It's nothing, I misread it."
Bai Lu followed behind him, teasingly saying, "Brother Xin, if you have any gossip, be sure to share it right away! Don't keep it to yourself!"
He thought Xu Xin had witnessed something shocking, and his face immediately darkened.
The protagonist of the so-called "explosive" scene is currently holding Huang Wang's mouse, intently helping him adjust the backend management.
From the second-floor view, it does indeed look like Bai Nan is lying on top of Huang Wang.
In reality, the two bodies were quite far apart, with enough space between them to fit another Bai Nan.
"Okay." She put down the mouse and pointed to the newly popped-up interface, saying, "Just enter your student ID number."
Huang Wang's eyes lit up. He entered the student ID numbers one by one, and after clicking confirm, a window popped up on the screen.
Login successful!
He immediately turned around: "Wow, Bai Di, you're amazing! You actually succeeded!"
"Yes, you can use it now, but after you top up your meal card, please come over and swipe the money as soon as possible, otherwise this record will remain and affect your ability to borrow books later."
"Okay, sure."
After spending an hour online, Huang Wang suggested going for a walk on the playground. Bai Nan, out of a sense of humanistic care as an older student mentoring a new student, led him there.
Upon arriving at the playground, I discovered that all the freshmen I hadn't seen before were gathered there.
Seeing this grand scene, Bai Nan realized that the first day of freshman registration was also the fixed day for club recruitment.
Club recruitment usually lasts for three days, with the first two days being the new student registration day and the last day being the military training day.
At this time, a group of tents for club recruitment were set up around the plastic track. The sun was still quite hot at the end of August, and everyone went inside the tents to cool off.
The more senior students in the community immediately surrounded the person as soon as they entered the shed:
"Junior, are you considering learning to dance? Do you have any experience? What dance style do you like?"
"Junior, junior, the calligraphy club not only provides you with the Four Treasures of the Study for free, but you can also register for national calligraphy competitions every semester! All free! All free!"
"You're the one for the campus's top ten singers! Attention, freshmen! Join the Nightingale Club and you can choose any music app membership you want!"
As soon as Bai Nan and Huang Wang entered a shed, they were instantly overwhelmed by a suffocating enthusiasm. The latter held his breath and fled through the long sunshade as if his life depended on it.
When they emerged again, both of them took a deep breath of fresh air, and under the bright sun overhead, Huang Wang couldn't help but burst out laughing.
"Hahahaha—" Bai Nan also burst into laughter, unable to hold back his laughter at the thought of his embarrassing moment earlier.
At this moment, several boys also rushed out from under the sunshade, their panting sounds as if a tiger was chasing them.
"Holy crap! That senior was amazing! She almost dragged me onto the stage to perform as a dancer! It scared me to death, thank goodness..."
Bai Nan and Huang Wang exchanged a glance upon hearing this, and their laughter, which had just stopped, broke out again.
It's not that they're timid; the upperclassmen are just too terrifying!
Bai Nan, with a fresh perspective, took Huang Wang on another tour of the campus and found that the campus, which she had known for two years, actually felt a little unfamiliar.
Some areas she had never visited before were illuminated for the first time, such as the grapevine corridor connecting the canteen and the dormitory. She always went back and forth between the teaching building and the canteen, or between the teaching building and the dormitory, and never noticed that this corridor was so beautiful.
For example, there were several self-service beverage vending machines next to the basketball court stands. As a girl who wasn't particularly interested in basketball, she had never stepped into this area on her own initiative. Even when she occasionally passed by, she would walk straight through without looking at it, and she had no idea that there were vending machines there.
There was also a small shop behind the cafeteria. She had never shopped there before, and today was the first time she went in. She and Huang Wang bought a popsicle to eat together.
As if picking up seashells, she bent down on this familiar beach, picking up one unfamiliar yet beautiful seashell after another, like a true rebirth, reliving her sunny high school life.
