Chapter 44 Collision

Although Wang Yanzhou didn't know what Tang Chen did when she went out during the day, nor did he know who she met. But he firmly disagreed with the idea of bringing a stranger into his house. As the old saying goes, you can be on guard against any thief, but you can't let a wolf into your house.

Seeing that Wang Yanzhou refused to agree to her request no matter what, Tang Chen had no choice but to give up. However, during this not-so-long winter, the chilblains on her hands kept coming back and never got better.

From New Year's Eve to the Lantern Festival, everything in the palace seemed just like any other day. In this atmosphere, if she hadn't seen the snow melting into the mud and the old trees sprouting, she wouldn't have even realized that the New Year had passed and spring had arrived. As expected, she had never really enjoyed watching the Spring Festival Gala, but without it, it felt like the New Year hadn't even begun.

Tang Chen sat in front of the bronze mirror, looking at Lian Qiao, who was quietly sitting beside her doing needlework, and then took in the feeling of this house where, apart from the birdsong, sometimes even footsteps could not be heard. She felt that she had to do something.

"Boss, I have a bold idea."

The mountain of account books on Wang Yanzhou's desk made it impossible for him to pay attention to Tang Chen. He just replied with a perfunctory "Oh" and continued working.

Tang Chen knew he was busy, so she came up with a way to have the best of both worlds. It would allow her to kill time while also protecting Wang Yanzhou's ears from the noise of her chattering. "I want to be a hero and see the world!"

Wang Yanzhou raised his head now, but gave the same answer as before.

Seeing how busy he was, Tang Chen realized that he was not an ignorant person. He stuck out his tongue at Wang Yanzhou, replaced the pot of hot tea for him, and left quietly.

Tang Chen didn't know how long these days lasted. She only remembered that Wang Yanzhou would lock himself in his study and work hard from the time the snow melted to the time the flowers bloomed.

One day, Tang Chen was still nestled in her warm quilt, dreaming sweet dreams, when she was ruthlessly dragged out of the quilt. When she came to her senses, it was still dark, and she found herself inexplicably standing at the back door of the palace.

Tang Chen was a little confused in her sleep, thinking she was sleepwalking again. Just as she was about to go back to sleep, Wang Yanzhou grabbed her collar. Without waiting for Tang Chen to ask, Wang Yanzhou lifted her onto his shoulders and carried her onto the horse.

Tang Chen suddenly realized what was happening and quickly asked Wang Yanzhou, who was about to start the fight, "Boss, where are we going secretly?"

Wang Yanzhou raised the corner of his mouth and said with a smile: "Wandering around the world."

Tang Chen slapped his thigh. God is not deceiving me: "Running away from home is exciting!"

That was true, but just as Wang Yanzhou was about to pull the reins and whip the horse, Tang Chen suddenly grabbed his hand and stopped him: "Wait!"

"What's wrong?"

Tang Chen turned around and looked at Wang Yanzhou with lingering fear, and asked timidly: "Can I apply to not ride a horse?"

"cannot."

"But my butt would really hurt!"

Wang Yanzhou looked at her frightened expression and shook his head helplessly. If he hadn't known that she couldn't ride a horse and that riding in a carriage would be a bit ostentatious, he wouldn't have been willing to give her a ride. "I'm really scared of you."

Tang Chen felt relieved when she heard Wang Yanzhou say this. But what happened next was beyond her expectations.

Tang Chen originally thought that after Wang Yanzhou carried her down, he would use a carriage as a means of transportation. But Wang Yanzhou actually climbed onto the horse's back, whipped the horse, and rode away. Before leaving, he didn't forget to tell Tang Chen: "I'll go first. Since you don't want to at least, then come catch up with me on foot. I'll meet you at the next post station."

Tang Chen looked at Wang Yanzhou's gradually receding figure before he came to his senses. He opened his voice and yelled at him: "Fuck, brother, your face has fallen to the ground. Do you really not want it anymore?"

...A few days later, Tang Chen and Wang Yanzhou leisurely rode their horses out of the Qingliang Valley. Before noon, Tang Chen felt a slight discomfort in his buttocks, so he asked Wang Yanzhou to stop and rest for a while.

Tang Chen dismounted and stretched her muscles for a while before she heard the sound of drums and music coming from somewhere, getting closer and closer. Soon, a procession, either escorting or welcoming the bride, appeared within her sight.

Tang Chen pointed at the group without a groom leading the way and asked curiously, "Boss, is this a wedding for someone?"

Wang Yanzhou nodded slightly and said, "About the same."

Tang Chen's eyes lit up. She had been here for so long and had never seen a wedding. It would be great to see the world. "Shall we go over and take a look?"

"Are you sure?"

"Definitely and definitely."

Wang Yanzhou fulfilled her wish and took her to follow the team at a distance. Tang Chen said that she really just wanted to take a closer look and didn't really want to participate!

Just as Tang Chen saw her wedding excitement waning, the bridal procession suddenly stopped by the river. The bride was ushered out of the sedan chair. If she was not mistaken, her hands seemed to be tied with ropes. Just as Tang Chen was wondering what kind of custom this was, an unexpected scene occurred.

The sound of drums and firecrackers rang out again, like a death warrant, forcing the bride to step into the turbulent river. The bride seemed a little scared and just as she retreated, she was pushed by the villagers behind her who were monitoring the whole process. She lost her balance and almost fell straight into the turbulent river.

Only then did Tang Chen realize that this wasn't a marriage at all; it was outright murder. These ignorant villagers, for the sake of a mythical river god, had forced an innocent woman to be sacrificed!

"Stop! What are you doing!?"

Tang Chen, who suddenly appeared and tried to disrupt everything, was immediately surrounded by villagers holding farm tools: "Who are you? How dare you disrupt the festival!"

Tang Chen looked at the woman walking towards the center of the river step by step, and angrily scolded everyone, "What a bullshit festival! You are murdering! Do you know what murder is? Would a real god do such a cruel thing?"

"This person is here to cause trouble. Let's arrest her and send her to the Lord River God!"

Wang Yanzhou, who was standing by and watching, saw that something was wrong. He pulled Tang Chen out of the crowd like a monkey trying to catch the moon, and rode away on his horse: "You can't take care of this. Let's go."

"Put me down!"

“…”

After running far away, Wang Yanzhou couldn't stand Tang Chen's noise anymore. Thinking that there was a post station not far ahead, he simply let Tang Chen go and scolded him coldly: "Do you really think you can snatch that girl back from those villagers with your own strength? Look at the look in the girl's eyes. Are you really sure that after you save her, she won't blame you for meddling in her business? Some things can't be changed just by saying so."
