Zhu Yunwen did not sleep well that night, because he knew...
This night was destined to be anything but peaceful. Since Zhu Yunwen would try to get the postmaster here to poison him, he would surely resort to other methods after his failure.
What he needs to do now is to respond to each move as it comes.
Sure enough, in the middle of the night, a group of forty or fifty bandits quietly approached the post station.
They then sneaked in and made their way to Zhu Yunwen's room. Once inside, one of them grabbed a machete and rushed to the head of the bed, slashing it several times.
The blankets on the bed were instantly chopped into pieces. Yet, there was no one left on the bed.
This made the sleazy-looking man's face darken, and suddenly his eyes widened as he said:
"Oh no, we've been on guard, we've been tricked."
After saying that, he turned to leave.
However, at that moment, torches lit up outside, completely surrounding the group of dozens of bandits.
There were only about ten postmen at the post station, plus ten Jinyiwei centurions under Zhu Yunwen, making a total of about twenty people.
This relieved the bandit leader; they clearly had a numerical advantage and didn't need to worry about being surrounded.
There was even a chance to kill Zhu Yunwen.
Zhu Yunwen, however, remained calm. He stood outside the post station, squinted, and carefully examined the group of bandits before speaking:
"I had considered that assassins might come to kill me, but I never expected it to be a group of bandits."
"Boy, are you the leader of these people?"
The bandit leader asked Zhu Yunwen about his identity, but he didn't know Zhu Yunwen's identity. He had only taken money from Zhu Yunwen to come here and kill a minor official.
Because Zhu Yunwen was dressed in ordinary clothes, his men were also dressed in ordinary clothes, which gave the bandit leader a false impression.
They thought they were just ordinary minor officials.
Zhu Yunwen didn't even bother to ask anything, and simply said to the Jinyiwei commanders behind him:
"Since they are bandits, let's not show any mercy and kill them all."
The bandit leader snorted and said:
"Kid, what a big mouth you have. You think you can kill more than forty of us with just twenty or so of you? You're just talking big."
Zhu Yunwen was too lazy to waste words, so he turned around, put his hands behind his back, and didn't want to see the bloody scene.
The ten Jinyiwei centurions rushed forward immediately, without even intending to let the dozen or so post station workers do anything.
After they rushed forward, they immediately drew the swords from their waists. Although they weren't embroidered spring knives, they still wielded ordinary broadswords with great skill.
The two sides clashed, and in the very first exchange, the leading Jinyiwei commander killed two bandits with two swift strokes.
This scene made the bandits quite nervous.
Immediately afterwards, the remaining officers of the Embroidered Uniform Guard also quickly launched a massacre.
Each of them swung their swords two or three times, killing one or two people. In just that short moment, more than ten of the forty-odd bandits died.
Now, even the most arrogant bandit leader realized that the situation was serious.
He charged forward, sword in hand, shouting as he tried to break through the encirclement:
"Who exactly are you people? Such killing skills are definitely not those of ordinary guards."
The leading Imperial Guard rushed forward, slashed with his sword to block him, and then exchanged several blows with him.
Seemingly to answer the bandit leader's question, during the fight, the Imperial Guard commander intentionally or unintentionally flashed the Imperial Guard token hanging from his waist under his clothes.
During the Ming Dynasty, the Embroidered Uniform Guard was very famous; everyone knew about it.
So when the bandit leader saw the token on the waist of the Imperial Guard, his face turned several shades pale.
The broadsword he was wielding also slowed down for a moment.
This gave the Jinyiwei centurion an opportunity. He flicked his long sword and cut the man's wrist, causing him to drop his cleaver.
Then, with a turn and a slash of his sword, a head flew off.
The fear and regret of the bandit leader before his death were clearly visible on his face.
Seeing that their leader had died a violent death, the other bandits became even more fearful.
They were already no match for the enemy, and at this point they were almost completely suppressed and became the target of a one-sided massacre.
A moment later, there was no movement behind Zhu Yunwen, and the air was filled with a somewhat nauseating smell of blood.
This made him somewhat uncomfortable.
The officers of the Embroidered Uniform Guard were also very sensible; they quickly dug pits nearby and buried the bodies on the spot.
Zhao Qingzhu was clearly not comfortable with this bloody scene either, so she changed the subject and said to Zhu Yunwen:
"Zhu Yunwen has tried to kill you many times. If you weren't careful, you would probably be dead by now. Aren't you going to fight back?"
Zhu Yunwen shook his head slightly and said, "I can't fight back. The best way to retaliate is to avoid all the harm he has done to me along the way."
Once we return to the capital, my grandfather will investigate everything thoroughly, and I'm sure his feelings towards Zhu Yunwen will not be very favorable.
If I were to kill Zhu Yunwen on the way, or do anything to harm him, my standing in my grandfather's heart would drop even further.
Even if Zhu Yunwen dies by then, I might not have much of a chance to gain any benefits.
I don't want to see a situation where two clams fight and a third party benefits. Keeping Zhu Yunwen alive will bring me many advantages, far more than killing him quickly.
In Zhu Yunwen's view, history is difficult to change, so it is highly likely that Zhu Yuanzhang will make Zhu Yunwen his heir apparent.
