Chapter 1

Yining was murdered.

In the beautiful spring of March, her eldest sister-in-law invited her to a temple to burn incense and enjoy an outing. While admiring the azaleas halfway up a mountain, she was pushed down. Luo Yining didn't even see who pushed her, and her soul had already passed away.

She was an ordinary legitimate daughter, her mother having died young, and she had many sisters, both legitimate and illegitimate. Her marriage to Lu Jiaxue, the illegitimate son of the Ningyuan Marquis, was a remarkable achievement. Although a concubine's daughter and a coward, she came from a respectable family. While not as wealthy as her second sister, who married into a wealthy family, she was still quite a success. It was unbelievable that she died in vain.

After Yining's death, her soul could not dissipate and attached itself to a jade hairpin belonging to her eldest sister-in-law.

After decades of ups and downs in the secular world, she had witnessed something truly remarkable. It turned out that her cowardly husband, Lu Jiaxue, was a ruthless character, playing the pig to eat the tiger. Five years later, he had her brother killed, and after overcoming several threats, he inherited the title of Marquis of Yongning. Not only that, within two years, he had become the commander-in-chief of the Left Army Commandery. His tactics were remarkable, and he commanded immense power, feared by all.

Yi Ning was attached to her eldest sister-in-law's hairpin. People often sighed at her rank and said, "This is pitiful. If she hadn't died so early, she would be the wife of a marquis or a governor, and would be the center of attention wherever she went."

Whenever Yining heard this, he wanted to jump up and poke that person in the spine.

How could she still not understand why she died? It was because she stood in Lu Jiaxue's way that he cruelly killed her and pinned her death on his eldest sister-in-law, causing her to feel guilty for the rest of her life.

This is what is meant by "there is always someone stronger than you", and one wave defeats the previous one.

Even when someone said that he never remarried in order to mourn his ex-wife, Yining was full of ridicule in her heart, because she didn't believe it.

Fifteen years passed like this, and he remained in power. Only Luo Shenyuan, the chief minister, could rival him. Two powerful ministers controlled the government, and their confrontation shook the court for a time. But his eldest sister-in-law was no longer alive. Yi Ning had spent her entire life with her, spending the rest of her life with her in the inner chambers, never seeing Lu Jiaxue again.

When his eldest sister-in-law was dying, he came to see her.

Admiral Lu was a man of great style, dressed in a silver fox fur crane cloak, a black robe, and a black jade pendant at his waist. As he aged, his figure became even more handsome. He spoke slowly, "Don't worry, sister-in-law. My brother is waiting for you downstairs..."

The eldest sister-in-law opened her eyes wide, then slowly closed them and passed away. Her hands fell to the ground, and the jade hairpin in her hand rolled down and broke into several pieces with a snap.

Yining has been a wronged soul on the jade hairpin for more than 20 years, and now he has finally died.

It is late spring in April, and the weather is still cold.

The Luo family in Baoding Prefecture is very busy today.

The seventh daughter of the Luo family caught typhoid fever and was extremely ill, even losing her breath at one point.

The entire Luo family was terribly worried. Old Madam Luo, now over seventy years old, sat by her bed, wiping her tears with a handkerchief. Her sisters gathered around her bed, watching over her, pouring in expensive medicines, determined to save Miss Seventh even if it meant spending all their money.

Mrs. Luo looked at the chubby little face of Miss Seven, which had become much thinner, and her heart ached. "If my Meimei gets sick, you can just let me go. I only have such a precious granddaughter, and I can't let anything happen to her!"

The expressions of all the granddaughters were slightly stiff. The old lady doted on the seventh lady from the beginning. In her eyes, this was the only granddaughter who received her love, and everyone else was worthless.

This eyeball is the only thing that hurts her, so everyone else is not her darling granddaughter?

Even though they thought so in their hearts, everyone still had to go forward to comfort him.

"Grandma, please take care of yourself."

"You are old, you shouldn't work so hard."

Madam Luo wiped her tears, gritted her teeth and said coldly, "Is that evil creature kneeling in the ancestral hall?"

The nanny nodded and said, "Master has been asked to watch him. He is kneeling and admitting his fault."

Mrs. Luo's face grew even colder. She took the nanny's hand and said, "Come with me to see him." The nanny agreed and helped the old lady out. At the door, she looked back and saw that the room was packed with people. It was no place for a patient to recuperate. She sent the young ladies back and told the maids who were looking after the seventh young lady, "Take good care of her."

Luo Yining heard these words when she just woke up from her confusion. However, she was still unconscious at that time and passed out again after closing her eyes.

Another day passed in this trance, with lucid moments interspersed, and the maids occasionally crying beside her. Luo Yining's mind was flooded with memories of the little girl. They were a miscellany, not comprehensive, mostly of various foods: braised pigeon with candied pear sauce, roasted quail, and braised lion's head. She was hungry; the little girl hadn't eaten in two days.

She also realized that she was reborn seven years after her death, when Lu Jiaxue had become the governor of the Left Military Governor's Office. This child was the seventh daughter of the Luo family in Baoding fifteen years ago. She had the same name as her, also called Luo Yining, nicknamed Meimei, and her mother had died early.

She was seven years old and had just caught a cold after falling into the water and died of her serious illness.

She was of noble status, her father a fourth-rank official in the imperial court, her elder sister Luo Yihui married into a marquisate, and her grandmother doted on her, practically the height of her life. Because of this pampering, even at the age of seven, she had everything she wanted, bullying whomever she pleased, causing her no end of trouble and earning her a great deal of jealousy and hatred.

If he wasn't still young and could still use the excuse of being naughty and cute, he would be nothing but arrogant and domineering.

Take the drowning incident, for example. It was she who threatened her third brother, Luo Shenyuan, to take her out to play, and she fell into the water because she was naughty and disobedient. She was rescued by Luo Shenyuan, and she fell ill after returning.
