Chapter 12

Yi Ning rarely saw him smile, but he was actually quite handsome when he did. The gloom between his eyebrows melted into a landscape painting, remarkably warm and bright. But when she came to her senses, she seemed a little nonchalant, speaking as if he hadn't eavesdropped.

Luo Shenyuan straightened his clothes and said calmly, "Yining, I'm going to school." He paused, "I'll pick you up this afternoon."

It seems that the task my grandmother entrusted me with was a pick-up and drop-off mission.

Yining thought about it, and seeing that he was about to leave, she quickly grabbed his hand.

Luo Shenyuan turned around and looked at her, as if asking her if there was anything else.

It was the first time Yi Ning felt the scar on his hand. It was rough and uneven. It was the scar caused by little Yi Ning...Yi Ning said, "Third brother, you don't have to listen to what grandma said. If you're too busy, you don't have to come to pick me up."

Luo Shenyuan looked at her and said slowly: "...I didn't say I was too busy."

Oh...Yining could only let him go and smiled: "Then I won't disturb my third brother from going to school."

This was Yining's first time attending school since her illness. Although Ms. Gu was still strict with her, at least she was no longer confrontational.

After school, Yi Ning saw Luo Shenyuan waiting for her outside. He stood with his hands behind his back under a tree, tall and thin, his expression silent. He turned slightly to the side when she came out, still holding out his hand. His eyebrows raised slightly, as if asking why she hadn't come over yet.

Yi Ning was led back by him again. As soon as she arrived outside Old Lady Luo's house, she heard laughter and chatter inside. After Yi Ning went in, she saw Chen, Lin Hairu, and her two brothers were all there. Cheng Lang was sitting next to Luo Huaiyuan. When he heard the voice, he turned his head to look at her. He had very handsome features, red lips and white teeth, but with thick eyebrows and bright eyes, he actually looked very romantic. Those breathtaking deep eyes seemed to look at everyone with deep affection.

Cheng Lang smiled and said, "I wonder who this person is..."

Yi Ning was thinking that although she was young, it would be a bad idea to ask someone who a young lady was. As the saying goes, "A seven-year-old should not be allowed to sit at the same table." She was almost eight years old now. Old Madam Luo smiled and said, "I haven't introduced you yet. This is our third son, Huijie'er's eldest brother, Luo Shenyuan."

Cheng Lang looked at Luo Shenyuan with a searching gaze, then stood up and folded his arms, saying, "So he's the brother-in-law of the Duke of Dingbei."

Only then did Yining realize that the person they were looking at and asking about was Luo Shenyuan, not her.

She thought this moment would go down in history, since the bloody events of the Lu Clan were not directly caused by Lu Jiaxue, but by Cheng Lang. But when she looked up, she noticed that her eldest and second brothers had very subtle expressions.

Naturally, this was a subtle move. Mrs. Luo appeared to be merely introducing Luo Shenyuan. But she was clearly telling everyone that Luo Shenyuan's status had changed; he was now a legitimate descendant of the Luo family. She began to value him. This meant that male heirs of the eldest branch of the family would no longer completely monopolize official career opportunities.

Luo Huaiyuan and Luo Shanyuan hadn't paid much attention to their usually taciturn third brother. But when Old Lady Luo introduced Cheng Lang as "Duke Yingguo's grandson, a young scholar," he responded with his usual composure, "Second Young Master Cheng, I've long admired you."

Compared to the now unknown Luo Shenyuan, Cheng Lang is indeed very famous in Baoding Prefecture.

Mrs. Luo also felt a little emotional. Luo Shenyuan indeed had a calmness and composure far beyond his years, which might be related to the hardships and trials he endured in his childhood, almost a kind of peace that came from enduring humiliation.

Cheng Lang smiled and said nothing more. However, his gaze on Luo Shenyuan paused for a few seconds, and then he looked at the person Luo Shenyuan was holding...Yining.

Yining felt a little strange. Before, he was the ignorant child, chasing her everywhere. Now she was the little bastard, while he had grown into a tall and handsome young man.

"Who is this little sister?"

Mrs. Luo smiled and said, "I raised her. She's usually playful and mischievous. Her name is Yining, and she's Huijie'er's biological sister."

"Yining?" Cheng Lang suddenly asked back.

Mrs. Luo said, "All the girls in our family are named with the character 'Yi'. She's always so lively, and I want her to be quieter, so I named her 'Yining'. But what's wrong with that?"

Yi Ning looked at Cheng Lang, but saw that Cheng Lang's smile had fallen silent. He seemed to sigh, "It's nothing. It's just that an old friend of mine also called me by that name, and I felt a little emotional for a moment."

"Who is the second young master's old friend?" asked the grandmother.

Cheng Lang looked at Yi Ning carefully, shook his head and said, "The name is the same, but the appearance is completely different. That old friend...she is more frail."

Yining thought that in order to maintain her figure, she didn't dare to eat too much meat, so naturally she looked weak.

Cheng Lang beckoned Yining to come over to him. Yining walked up to him and realized that he had actually grown quite a bit, but if he were a little fatter and a little more childish, he would still seem like the same little Cheng Lang. Cheng Lang took off a string of Buddhist beads from his hand and gave it to Yining. "Little sister Yining and I have a connection, so I'm giving this to you. It's a small-leaf red sandalwood I got from a temple. It's been blessed by an old monk and it will bring you safety and health."

Yi Ning took it, thanked her, and returned to Mrs. Luo's side. Yi Ning was still young, after all, so no one else paid much attention. Besides, the Buddhist beads weren't a valuable item. Holding the slightly warm beads, Yi Ning thought to herself that Cheng Lang had truly grown up. She could hardly recognize him as the child she had doted on, the one who loved to cry and make noises.

Then, the true representatives of the Luo family, the eldest uncle and Yining's father, returned. Naturally, the men left to discuss the imperial examination, while Yining and the others returned to the west side room. She was startled when she first arrived. Luo Yilian, Luo Yiyu, and Luo Yixiu were all crouching behind a screen, peeking at Cheng Lang. When they saw her enter, they all shushed her. Luo Yixiu even beckoned her over to join them in eavesdropping.

Yining had a headache, but seeing that the female elders sitting next to her didn't intend to care, she followed over, wanting to hear what Cheng Lang and the others were talking about.
