Chapter 128

Yi Ning looked at the piles of Naji gifts piled high in the aisle, with the red silk tied on them, and her eyes hurt. She said, "Carry them to the side room first and leave them there. Don't move them."

The maid from Zhigaotang served her hot tea and asked her to drink it while waiting.

She drank her tea until it turned from yellow to colorless before Cheng Lang came out of the main room. He saw Yi Ning sitting outside and walked over to her, smiling, "I was just going to look for you."

He was wearing an official robe with a round collar and right-side lapel and a cloud and goose pattern. He looked elegant and graceful, with a certain formality that was not usually there.

Yi Ning told Chen Lian to tell Wei Ling that she had something to talk to him about. She gestured for Cheng Lang to follow her out of the main hall. When they were a little further away, she turned around and asked, "A Lang, what are you doing?"

"I'll marry you." His eyes were blazing, but there was a gentle smile on his lips. "Don't worry, I'll take care of everything. My grandfather has already agreed. Once you get to the Cheng family, I'll be there to protect you."

"Alang." Yining still couldn't get over that hurdle. You could say she was indecisive, but she couldn't agree anyway, even though she knew Cheng Lang just wanted to help her.

Cheng Lang lowered his head slightly, as if listening carefully to what she was saying. He had a nice jawline, a slightly protruding Adam's apple, and a beautiful curve. His expression was also very serious.

Yi Ning became more determined after seeing this. She continued, "You'd better not help me. I can handle this matter myself. You should marry a girl you like and live a good life with her. Marrying me is really a waste of your time. What's the big deal? I can't let you make such a big sacrifice."

Cheng Lang sighed inwardly. She actually thought that? Luckily, she didn't know what he was really thinking. Otherwise, with her personality, she would have definitely run as far away from him as possible. He immediately held her hand. "Yining, I'm willing to help you. Who else could help you right now? Don't overthink it. I'm definitely not unwilling to do this."

"That little kindness is worth repaying?" Yi Ning smiled and shook her head. "You were young back then, and I raised you out of pity. You absolutely shouldn't repay me for this..."

"You think it's a small gesture of kindness, but for me, it's something I'll never forget," Cheng Lang said, his lips curled up. Because they were so close, Yining could see his handsome face with incredible clarity: long eyelashes, a straight nose, and thin lips with beautiful, elegant lines. His eyes were deep, like lush bamboo forests in the early morning, or misty mountains after rain, making one feel trance-like.

Yining suddenly felt that Cheng Lang's attitude was really strange.

He was so obsessed with helping her, why did he have to go to such lengths? On the contrary, when she said she disagreed, he seemed even more anxious—as if he was afraid that she would disagree.

Just as Yi Ning was about to continue speaking, one of Cheng Lang's guards came quickly from the corridor and whispered something in his ear.

When Cheng Lang heard the guard's words, his face suddenly darkened.

"Didn't I say long ago that no one except me can change the transfer order? Who is the person in charge of the performance evaluation..." He said in a cold voice and asked Yining to wait for him for a quarter of an hour so that he could deal with the emergency here.

Yi Ning could tell it was a matter of the Ministry of Personnel, and thinking that Wei Ling was still waiting for her in Zhigao Hall, she let him do his own thing first.

She walked through the dense shade of trees outside Zhigao Hall, a few rays of sunlight filtering through the trees onto her body. She felt the weather was still stifling, the autumn heat was showing its full force and should not be underestimated. Then she told Zhenzhu that the daily mung bean soup to cool her down was still necessary and could not be discontinued for the time being. Zhenzhu took note and said to her, "Miss, the servant from the front yard just came with a message. He said that a girl named Lianfu is looking for Master Cheng. She has his name card."

Since Yi Ning was already discussing marriage with Cheng Lang, Pearl would naturally be cautious when a young woman came to visit, especially one who came directly. She continued, "I saw that the girl was pretty and had a different temperament than most girls, so I left her in the back room and asked her to wait. Do you think you would like to see her?"

"Lianfu?" Yining repeated. The name sounded familiar.

"It sounds like a flower name to me. She didn't say which family she came from or what her surname was." Zhenzhu was just saying this when Cheng Lang came up from behind. "...There were some problems with the judicial examination, but it's all settled now." He smiled and said to Yining, "Why don't I go with you to have a look outside today? I know there are a few restaurants along the river east of the city. They're very uniquely decorated and the food is Jiangnan style."

He hoped to spend more time with her. He had many tricks he could use on other women, but not on her. But as long as she married him, everything would be fine between the two of them!

Yi Ning glanced at Zhenzhu. If there really was a woman he had a problem with, it would be best for him to handle it himself. She wouldn't bother to complain. So, she said to Cheng Lang, "There's a girl named Lianfu who's looking for you. Zhenzhu saw she had your name card, so she kept her here. You should go and see her..."

Cheng Lang's pupils shrank slightly when he heard the word "Lian Fu". But after all, he had been tempered by the officialdom and could not see anything unusual. He just said, "Where is she now? I'll go see."

Yining asked Daimao to take him to the back room. This time, Cheng Lang did not delay and took his men to the back room.

Yi Ning glanced at the plaque hanging in Zhigao Hall, feeling a little uneasy. This was, after all, the Duke of Ying's mansion. If anything went wrong, it wouldn't be good if word got out. She felt it was only natural for her to go and take a look. She asked Zhenzhu and Qingqu to follow her as they followed the corridor to the back room.

Outside the back house were many bamboos and a banana tree. The banana tree bore no fruit, but the green tiles and white walls, along with the shimmering water, reflected the lake beautifully.

Yi Ning looked at the scenery. Just as she reached the railing, the guard at the door stopped her and said, "Miss, our masters are talking inside."
