Such a lively wedding always reminds him of his own wedding.
Lu Jiaxue only got married once in his life.
In reality, there hadn't been such a grand ceremony. Back then, he was just an unremarkable bastard, financially strapped. He'd bought everything he could, but when he married her, he was so excited and delighted, something she certainly didn't know. When she lifted her veil and looked up at him, he beamed.
Now he is in a high position and has everything: wealth, power, status, and can give her anything.
But that person is no longer there.
Lu Jiaxue closed his eyes deeply, and the sunlight outside was about to disappear.
Yining felt that the atmosphere was really weird, and no one came in to talk. It was getting dark, and it was almost time to go to bed.
She walked out, thinking of calling a servant to go check, but she heard the man behind her suddenly say, "Her name is also Yining."
Her heart suddenly jumped, and she forgot how to react. Her hands gripped the door frame until they turned white and her nails hurt.
An emotion he couldn't quite pinpoint, anger or sadness, churned endlessly. Lu Jiaxue had experienced countless revolutions and wars, countless ups and downs. Now, standing at the pinnacle of power, wantonly manipulating the lives of others, he could still remember the wife he'd married back in the Marquis's mansion, when he was just a common bastard.
Why bring it up suddenly?
Yi Ning tried to keep her tone as calm as possible: "I don't quite understand what my foster father is talking about."
Lu Jiaxue had only just thought of saying it. Perhaps it was the silence of the night that made his memories seem even clearer. The person he had worked so hard to get, the person he had loved so dearly, was gone. The anger and despair he had felt, the desire to destroy everything, were now nothing more than a simple, plain statement in the evening light.
"You don't need to understand." He said calmly, "It should be about time now. Go call your father in."
Yining looked at the evening sun and looked back at him.
In the strong golden light, the dark shadow in the room covered half of his face, and the man who once smiled had a stern and indifferent look on his face.
"Okay." Yining replied, and then she walked out of the room.
She was about to call a servant to invite her father over, but she leaned against the pillar and remained silent for a long time.
Until a voice called her softly: "Yining."
Yining turned around and saw Luo Shenyuan, dressed in a bright red auspicious robe, walking towards him from the corridor. He had big steps and his tall figure was coated with the golden light of the setting sun. Following behind him were people from the Shenji Camp.
Yining was momentarily dazed, the figure of this person overlapping with another smiling figure. But he didn't smile, and his auspicious attire even had a solemn air.
He walked up to Yi Ning with his hands behind his back, then squeezed her hand. After checking that she was fine, he seemed relieved and said, "I'll have someone take you back to the East Courtyard. You'll need to rest for a while before you get on the bridal sedan. Don't miss the auspicious time."
Yi Ning was still concerned about the thieves: "Third brother, have they been caught?"
"They've caught him and are still interrogating him." Luo Shenyuan said, "Go back quickly. You are not allowed to see me until we get married."
"The dowry that Commander Lu sent... contained human heads." Yi Ning said to Luo Shenyuan before leaving. "I guess he killed at least one deputy commander, otherwise he wouldn't have brought the heads back. You have to tell father."
"I know everything." He touched Yining's head and softened his voice. "You are a bride, and you are getting married. Someone will take care of these matters. Go back quickly."
Yi Ning's nose suddenly felt sore when he heard this. Then he followed the people from the Shenji Camp to the East Courtyard.
Old Madam Wei and the others were relieved to see that she was alright. Seeing that Yining's makeup had faded a bit, they hurriedly asked someone to touch it up. Then she put on a full set of headgear, and the wife of the Marquis of Dingbei, a well-off woman, inserted a gold hairpin into her headgear, and she was formally dressed.
The mansion was bustling again with the sound of gongs and drums. The guests who came to congratulate only knew that something had happened, but they didn't know what it was.
Wei Ling led the men from the Shenji Camp to round up the men, tying them up and throwing them into the woodshed. There was no time to ask Lu Jiaxue who he had killed or what they were doing there. After all, it was already an auspicious time, so Wei Ling stood in the front hall, waiting for Quanfuren and the bridesmaid to come over with their daughter to say goodbye.
Yining knelt down and kowtowed to him and her grandmother. Seeing that everyone was looking at her, she smiled.
Just pretend nothing happened and set off for Fuxue Hutong, otherwise I will miss the wedding ceremony.
Wei Ling's eyes flickered as she stepped forward to help her daughter up, not knowing what to say. Old Madam Wei took Yi Ning's hand, smiled, said some auspicious words, and told Cheng Lang to carry her to the bridal sedan.
Yi Ning turned around one last time to see Wei Ling and Old Lady Wei looking at her. Even Zhao Mingzhu was standing beside her grandmother, smiling at her. Ting Ge'er, held by Mama Tong's hand, looked at her with a look of reluctance and pity.
He had no mother or brothers, and had been very lonely since childhood. Zhao Mingzhu was not his biological sister, and Yi Ning had taken care of him for a year, and they had finally formed some attachment, but now she was getting married.
She can come back after she gets married, but she will already be someone else's wife.
Yining touched Ting'er's head, but he held his head high and said nothing.
The Quanfu people covered her with a veil.
Yining could no longer see anything. As the red light swayed, she felt herself on a solid back, and he was carrying her steadily.
The sedan chair was pushed forward, and Yining got into it, holding the aquarius. The man who had brought her in suddenly shook her hand gently, then let go. Then the sedan chair was lifted up.
