Chapter 155
Although her surname was Wei, Luo Shenyuan would still call her Luo Yining when he was angry or wanted to teach her a lesson.
"I'm talking about a divorce," Yi Ning continued. "If you agree, I'll go back and draft the divorce papers, then find my father and mother and ask respected elders to witness them."
Whenever Yining heard him calling her by her full name, she always felt like she had done something wrong.
If life was peaceful and easy, why would she bother herself with trouble and seek divorce?
Whether divorced or divorced, a woman's reputation was tarnished after marriage, making it difficult to remarry. Her return to the Duke of Ying's mansion was a grand return, and she feared she would rely on Ting'er's children to support her in her old age. While remarrying after a divorce was not forbidden, it would lead to backstabbing. In Yi Ning's previous life, her housekeeper remarried. Her previous husband was lazy, drunk, and abusive. She divorced him and married a younger man, whose first husband had nearly taken all her savings when he left. Later, Yi Ning often heard people whisper about her being coquettish and unable to leave her husband.
Luo Yining was very angry when he heard this, and punished the housekeeper severely several times before no one dared to say anything about her.
Women are always the weaker party.
After the divorce, no matter who Luo Shenyuan married, even if he married Ge Miaoyun, the daughter of the Grand Censor Ge, as he had done in his previous life, others would only praise him for his good fortune. But if she married again, she would be criticized.
After returning to the Duke of Ying's mansion, she could deal with Lu Jiaxue properly, without worrying about him threatening Luo Shenyuan's career. She also wanted to find out the truth of what happened; no one could die in obscurity. But she wouldn't marry again. Rumors were terrifying, and she didn't have the energy to serve a husband.
Luo Yining had thought deeply about him before she could even talk about divorce.
Otherwise, which woman would have the courage to say such words so easily?
Seeing that he remained silent, Luo Yining asked again, "Third brother?"
The carriage was shaking, and Luo Shenyuan was filled with coldness, as if he was alienated from the inside out.
He didn't want to think about it, but his mind kept replaying the events of the past few days: the secret letter Luo Yining had written to Cheng Lang, in which she had referred to her adoptive father as Lu Jiaxue. Luo Yining was so special to him. He had so much now, yet it felt like he had nothing. His grandmother, his father, his teachers—none of them truly treated him with sincerity. She was the only thing that made him feel soft. Since his youth, he had harbored a secret desire, a desire for her to belong to him alone.
Seeing that he didn't say anything, Luo Yining sighed slightly. He must have felt uncomfortable after hearing that, so he ignored her.
Maybe he was disappointed in her and agreed to the divorce, so he acquiesced.
She was also making random guesses, and no one spoke in the carriage.
Daci Temple was in the outer suburbs, while Fuxue Hutong was in the inner city. It was already late. Upon entering the city, Luo Shenyuan displayed his badge, and the group respectfully bowed and addressed him as "Lord Luo." The guards at the gates were all from the Five Cities Military Commission. Luo Shenyuan had a good relationship with the commander, so the officers treated him with the utmost respect. They didn't even ask what he had done outside, but opened the gates and let him in.
From a distance, Luo Yining could see the door of the Moding shop at the corner of Fuxue Hutong, and the locust trees planted beside it. These were all familiar scenes, telling her that she was home.
Crepe lanterns were lit at the entrance to Luo's house. It was dark inside because it was so late and everyone was asleep.
The servant rubbed his sleepy eyes and led the carriage to the stables. Luo Shenyuan led her back to Xuanjing Hall, where they lived. A maid was on duty in the front yard and hurriedly opened the gate. The tall, ancient trees in the yard had already shed their leaves. Yi Ning was stunned by the sight of the fallen leaves on the ground. She remembered that they had just turned yellow a few days ago. It was amazing that they had fallen so quickly.
Luo Shenyuan walked in front of her, and nothing seemed wrong.
Luo Yining saw Zhenzhu guarding her at the door. Seeing that Yining was a little excited, she immediately bowed to her and her eyes became red.
"You're finally back!" Then he took her to the bathroom to wash and bathe.
After soaking in the wooden tub, Yi Ning's hair was soaked. She took off her hairpin and simply let her hair down to dry. The little girl dropped a few drops of rose water into the water. Yi Ning smelled the rose scent and relaxed in the hot water. Then she asked Zhenzhu, "How has life been in the mansion these days?"
"In order to prevent your disappearance from being revealed, the Third Young Master said that you were a guest at Madam Yang's house. I didn't dare show up in the house, so the Third Young Master sent me to the farm to hide. So I don't know what's going on in the house." Zhenzhu said softly.
Third brother seems to be very careful in his work, so he must have kept her disappearance a secret in the mansion.
He had to worry about the affairs of the court and manage the family. Even if he had three heads and six arms, he would not be able to handle it all. If he had not married her, he would not have to worry about these things.
Yi Ning was silent for a moment, then asked, "What time is it now?"
"It's almost midnight." Pearl took the silk cloth from the maid and wiped her body. Then she picked up a single garment made by Lu Chou from another black lacquer square tray. Just as she was about to put the clothes on her, she lifted her hair and saw a cut on the back of her neck. Pearl cried out, "Madam, how did you get hurt? Who did it?"
"...It's still bleeding." Yi Ning pressed the wound and ordered, "Go find some ointment."
Zhenzhu agreed and left. Yining stood up, donned an indigo-colored jacket with a round pattern, and left the bathroom. In the inner room, Luo Shenyuan was reading a memorial beneath a candle. Hearing her leave, he handed the memorial to the maidservant and went straight to the bathroom to bathe. Yining sat down, and since she had nothing else to do, she simply took a brush from his writing rack, moistened it with ink, and spread out paper to write a letter to the Duke of Ying.
