Chapter 167
The bridal chamber, nestled in the West Garden, was ablaze with lights. It was a bustling and bustling time. Second Madam Cheng led Yi Ning inside. The streets were strewn with shredded red paper. Inside, the house was decorated with red silk, wedding characters, wedding scales, and other items. The furniture was a complete suite of golden nanmu furniture, and the flooring was polished like new. Xie Yun, dressed in a vibrant red wedding gown and covered with a gold-plated veil, sat upright on the bed. The sisters-in-law and the bride were laughing and chatting cheerfully. Xie Yun's maid was adjusting her skirt, while Yi Ning quietly stood beside Lin Hairu.
The bridal chamber was bustling with activity. But why wasn't Cheng Lang there? Wasn't he supposed to come in with Xie Yun?
At this moment, someone outside shouted: "The bridegroom is coming——"
Everyone looked towards the door, and then Cheng Lang, dressed in a bright red auspicious suit, walked in. He was a handsome and elegant young man, as beautiful as jade. The bright red auspicious suit was indeed festive. He pursed his lips slightly. His eyes fell on Luo Yining, and his expression suddenly became complicated. He did not move for a moment.
"It's time for the groom to take off the veil!" Quanfu said with a smile.
Cheng Lang hesitated for a moment before walking forward, ignoring Luo Yining. He took the wedding scale from the tray handed over by the maid and lifted Xie Yun's veil.
Xie Yun's bright face was revealed, adorned with a phoenix crown and a gorgeous robe, and the candlelight was deep. There was a unique and moving beauty in the evening light.
There was even a faint smile on Xie Yun's lips. He glanced around the room and saw Luo Yining.
That hint of smile faded.
Luo Yining didn't want to come either. Grandma Cheng couldn't find anyone to fill in for her. What else could she do? She could only silently pray to Miss Xie Yun and pretend she didn't exist.
"Perform the wedding ceremony." Quanfuren continued.
A pair of small wine glasses, tied together by red strings, were brought up, and everyone cheered enthusiastically. Cheng Lang lifted his glass and intertwined his arms with Xie Yun's. He then smiled, and Xie Yun seemed almost bewildered by his smile. Cheng Lang, however, lifted his glass and drank it all in one gulp, revealing a clean and elegant jaw. For a moment after setting down his glass, he lowered his eyes, and the surrounding noise seemed very distant. Ever since he saw that person standing in the corner, he had been overwhelmed by this strange feeling.
It seems sad, and it seems to be nothing.
Sometimes, when something comes too easily to a person, they become incredibly obsessed with what they can't. The way he swore his vow before her as a young boy, the way he ascended the throne, the way he grew up step by step. It all seemed to pass in a flash, and there was a strange sense of calm.
Luo Yining stared at the child in a daze. It was hard for her to articulate her feelings. But the emotion faded in a moment. He smiled and raised his empty glass, still ignoring her.
A maid brought up a red lacquered square plate with something covered with red silk and was about to serve it to her.
Luo Yining stepped aside to let her pass, but the girl tripped over something and stumbled, losing her balance on the tray in her hands. The object on it fell to the ground with a clear shattering sound. The Quanfu people accompanying them hurried to pick it up. It was a jade Guanyin statue, carved from jadeite, and the drop had a noticeable crack on the jade.
This sudden change immediately surprised everyone. The maid serving the food was so frightened that she quickly knelt on the ground: "This servant was careless. I don't know what tripped me... This servant really didn't mean it!"
She was so frightened that her face turned pale. She was Xie Yun's maid who came with her as a dowry. If anything happened on the day of the young lady's wedding, a beating would be the least of her trouble. She would probably be sold off.
Fortunately, Quanfu was a clever talker and immediately said with a smile, "Jade can turn misfortune into good fortune. This shattered jade has warded off disaster. From now on, you two will live happily and harmoniously!"
Xie Yun looked towards Luo Yining. The girl just said something tripped her, but there was clearly nothing on the ground, and only Luo Yining was standing next to her.
Luo Yining had discussed marriage with Cheng Lang before, and she probably still missed him, so she was unwilling to give in. Otherwise, why would she show up here to make trouble in her bridal chamber? Xie Yun said calmly, "You just said... something tripped you? The ground was smooth and there was only Mrs. Luo San nearby. Mrs. Luo San, did you see clearly how my girl fell?"
Is Xie Yun questioning her?
Luo Yining stepped forward and said with a smile, "I didn't see it clearly, so I don't know what Second Miss Xie meant by that."
"I don't know either. If there was nothing tripping her, how could my girl have dropped the jade? This Guanyin statue was brought back from Yunnan by my second uncle. It is crystal white in color and has a very good meaning. I wonder if Mrs. Luo San doesn't like the meaning of this Guanyin statue? Of course, I'm just saying this. If not, please don't mind, Mrs. Luo San." Xie Yun said with a smile.
Never mind, she said it so lightly!
"Miss Xie is right. It was indeed only Mrs. Luo San who was standing next to us..." A lady suddenly interrupted and was then hit by someone, signaling her to shut up.
"Other things are fine, but it wouldn't be nice to ruin the meaning of this Guanyin Bodhisattva." Xie Yun lowered his head and smiled again, "Besides, my second uncle rarely comes back from Yunnan, so I brought it here specially for the wedding. I don't value other things so much, Mrs. Luo San, please forgive me."
One of them was a daughter of the Duke of England, and the other was the Queen's niece. No one else interrupted.
Yi Ning stepped forward and said, "I understand that the gifts from Second Miss Xie's relatives are important. I believe I haven't done anything to that girl. If Second Miss Xie really has doubts, just name a price and I'll pay it first, and we'll let it go. It won't interfere with your wedding and delay the auspicious time. What do you think, Second Miss Xie?"
Yi Ning's words were watertight and very skillful, both expressing his stance and seeking to appease the situation. Suddenly, Xie Yun was in the wrong.
