Chapter 186

The servant ran very fast, and soon several boxes of fresh water chestnut cakes wrapped in red paper were in his hands. He took them to Jiashutang.

Luo Yining had just returned from the first wife's house and had met the newborn son of Zhou and Zhou. Ever since Luo Yilian's affair with Liu Jing, the first and second wives had become somewhat distant, but she had just returned and felt compelled to meet him. Seeing Luo Yining arrive, Chen warmly invited her to lunch.

Yining had a full stomach and was a little surprised to see Luo Xuanyuan sitting in the flower hall as soon as she entered the house.

Luo Xuanyuan stood up and smiled at her: "Third sister-in-law, I'll bring you some snacks."

Send snacks? Luo Yining didn't have much contact with him, so she was suspicious. What snacks did he send? She glanced at the box in his hand.

I'm afraid he wants to make friends.

"It's Xiangji's water chestnut cake," Luo Xuanyuan said as he unwrapped the paper and opened the box. "It's different from other water chestnut cakes. It's filled with almonds, walnuts, and red dates. It's fried on both sides until golden brown. It's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and tastes like the sweetness of osmanthus."

He was Luo Yilian's younger brother, so Yining was naturally a little wary. He nodded calmly, "Zhenzhu, go get some freshly made persimmon cakes and bring them back for the Fourth Young Master to try."

Luo Xuanyuan smiled faintly, reached out and took a pair of chopsticks from the table, picked up a piece of water chestnut cake and placed it on a small plate, then slowly handed it to Yining: "I know Third Sister-in-law likes cakes, you try it first, the taste is different from other places."

Luo Shenyuan just came back from court.

The young man, half grown, was sitting in the hall, his handsome face smiling. He held out his chopsticks. Opposite him sat Yining, also smiling.

Luo Shenyuan narrowed his eyes slightly, the intense feeling of discomfort returning. His eyes darkened, and he walked towards the two men. His followers stood outside the hall.

"What's wrong?"

Yi Ning heard a familiar voice behind him and thought he must have come home early. Turning around, he saw his tall figure and smiled, saying, "Third brother, it's rare for you to come home early today. He brought some snacks."

Luo Xuanyuan also stood up immediately and bowed respectfully: "Third brother, these are Xiangji's pastries. I saw that Third Sister-in-law likes them..."

"How do you know what she likes to eat?" Luo Shenyuan interrupted him lightly before he finished speaking.

Luo Xuanyuan's smile froze.

Luo Shenyuan walked up to him and looked at the cartons. They were indeed filled with pastries. He then noticed the small plates and chopsticks beside them and continued, "Did she eat anything? Did she need you to bring it over?"

I remember that when Luo Xuanyuan was young, he really disliked Yining. Why is he so close to her now?

Luo Xuanyuan was just trying to please Yi Ning, but somehow he earned the cold shoulder from his third brother. What had he done wrong? Luo Xuanyuan smiled awkwardly, but managed to maintain his composure: "My brother is being nosy. I'll take my leave now."

Luo Yining was surprised to see Luo Xuanyuan disappearing into the distance. Luo Shenyuan had always been indifferent to his brothers and sisters, but he wouldn't be so ruthless, right?

"Third brother..."

He held her hand tightly. "It's cold outside, let's go back."

As they walked along the street, he noticed her strange expression and said calmly, "Don't get in touch with Luo Xuanyuan anymore. He's got a lot on his mind."

"What could he possibly be thinking? He's just trying to curry favor with you through me." Luo Yining said with a smile, "Why are you so nervous? Are you afraid he'll plot against me? He wouldn't dare to do that even if he had the guts."

"Yeah." He just responded.

Luo Yining frowned, and it took him a moment to react: "Are you..."

"Yining, I told you." Luo Shenyuan squeezed her shoulders, "I don't like you caring about others."

"I don't care about him." Luo Yining took the initiative to pull his arm and explained, "What are you thinking? Luo Xuanyuan is your brother. He is so young. To me, he is just a child."

"Well, I just don't like him." Luo Shenyuan said as he touched her hair, "He looks a bit like me, doesn't he?"

"Brother Bao looks more like you!"

Luo Shenyuan thought she was being sophistry, so he lowered his head and kissed her forehead. "Okay, no more." He really couldn't control his possessiveness right now. If he could, he really wanted to lock her up so she wouldn't disappear and fall in love with someone else. His hands trembled in his sleeves, hiding all the twisted expressions.

Yining felt that the look he gave her was deep and bottomless.

She whispered, "I only like you."

"Yeah." He pulled her into the house. With her by his side, all his emotions were soothed.

Yi Ning wanted to bring him the soup, but he looked up slightly and asked, "Where are you going?"

"I'll be back in a bit," Yi Ning said, leaving the west side room. A gust of north wind blew in. She let out a soft breath. In the kitchen, turtle soup was simmering. She lifted the lid slightly and added a handful of red dates. The dates rolled into the water, bobbing and sinking. Her profile seemed frozen in the water, her eyelashes drawn back, a look of impassive emotion.

Luo Yining turned around when she heard the noise and found him leaning against the door. He was watching her work quietly. She smiled and said, "Waiting for soup?"

"Yeah." Luo Shenyuan seemed not to hear her question.

"Third brother, I have something to ask you," Luo Yining said, "Bao-ge'er is already half a year old, and he still doesn't have a name. Have you thought of a name for him?"

Last night, while reading in his study, he'd given it some thought. He wasn't a wealthy businessman, so he certainly couldn't use the character "宝" (treasure) as a name. He'd drafted a few names, but none of them seemed right. He looked at her and said, "I haven't decided yet. You can choose one."

Luo Yining recalled her grandmother's words to her: when Luo Shenyuan was born, he hadn't been given a proper name, but Luo Chengzhang had said, "Be careful in your future actions," and so he was named Luo Shenyuan. The "Xuan" in Luo Xuanyuan's name had been chosen after a Taoist fortune-teller's divination, so it had a long history.
