Chapter 3

It was early summer, not too hot, and little Yining was being washed by Xuezhi while Old Lady Luo was chanting sutras. A maid came in with a handkerchief, and Yining recognized it as Songzhi, another of her older maids.

While the maids were wiping Yining's feet, she looked at Old Lady Luo's room.

The floor was covered with a velvet carpet depicting five bats offering longevity. Atop a tall golden nanmu table stood a bluish-white glazed plum vase, with a few crabapple blossoms inserted diagonally. The main hall was separated by a sandalwood screen depicting a hundred birds paying homage to a phoenix, framed by white jadeite. A bodhisattva statue sat atop a long table.

The things in the old lady's room are very valuable.

Just take the statue of Bodhisattva as an example. It is carved from a piece of white jade with a warm color and no flaws. It is one foot tall and is very valuable.

She turned around and called out "Grandma."

Mrs. Luo looked up and asked her, "What's wrong?"

She lifted her two little white feet and said, "I'm done washing, time to go to bed." She added, "I want to sleep with grandma, is that okay?"

Mrs. Luo thought she was cute and came to hug her with a smile. "Of course, Mrs. Xu, add another quilt to my bed."

Yi Ning naturally wanted to plead for Luo Shenyuan, but this was so different from her usual behavior that she would definitely be suspected. After thinking for a moment, she tactfully asked Mrs. Luo, "Grandma, since my third brother was punished to kneel, does he have to kneel at night as well?"

Mrs. Luo said, "I don't kneel at night, I go every morning."

It seems that this punishment of kneeling also includes working time.

Yi Ning then continued, "Mrs. Qiao said he has a high fever that won't go away...why don't we find a doctor to see him?"

Xuezhi chuckled beside him, "Sister usually dislikes the Third Young Master, so why are you speaking up for him now?"

Yi Ning knew that little Yi Ning was not very nice to Luo Shenyuan, so she also found an excuse and said in a high-sounding manner: "If he falls ill, he can't continue to be punished by kneeling."

Mrs. Luo laughed and scratched her nose. "You little thing, you're quite thoughtful. Don't worry, your Aunt Qiao wouldn't fail to find a doctor for him. I saw her send someone to get one this afternoon, and I didn't ask anyone to stop her. I just took it as her consent."

Even if it was a punishment, Mrs. Luo would not really put Luo Shenyuan's life in danger.

Yining was unhappy when she heard this. Aunt Qiao acted too quickly.

Xuezhi continued, "You see, the Third Young Master saved up for a long time to buy a rare book, and you asked me to make paper cranes for him to play with, and even asked me to give him a few. When I gave them to him, he turned pale. And last time, you insisted on eating dates, and asked me to pick them for you. The tree was so high, how could you climb it? After I finally picked them, you threw them away on the spot, saying you didn't want to eat them anymore..."

Yining broke out in a cold sweat after hearing this. This little girl was really courting death in her daily life. If she could really grow up successfully, her ancestors would definitely be very proud of her.

Mrs. Luo listened and pinched her face again: "Listen, you are usually so spoiled."

Mrs. Luo's tone was full of indulgence and she didn't have the slightest intention of blaming her granddaughter.

But this is not pampering, this is courting death.

Yining could only nod and crawl onto the bed, grabbing the quilt.

The old lady asked the maid to blow out the lights and go to sleep.

Lin Hairu had returned from Old Lady Luo's stay, but she couldn't sleep at all. She twisted her handkerchief in her hands and practically gnashed her teeth, "Master, as soon as you got back, you went to that little bitch?"

Ruixiang, the personal maid, said, "Mrs. Qiao went to the study that afternoon to wait anxiously. I heard that when she came back, the master felt that she was cold and even put his cloak on her."

Lin Hairu sneered: "There's no place to shelter from the wind in the study, why do you have to wait at the windshield?"

Ruixiang whispered, "That's just the behavior of a little bitch. She's clearly just a skinny horse bought from Yangzhou, but the master insisted that she was the daughter of a poor official and became his concubine - what official could raise such a shameless young lady?"

Lin Hairu looked at her personal maid with appreciation and felt that what she said made sense.

She paused and said slowly, "I won't imitate such shameless behavior. Tomorrow afternoon, stew a squab with ginseng. I'll send it to the master." Ruixiang was about to give instructions when Lin Hairu suddenly called her back, "Wait, stew two servings. Send one to Yining. She's recuperating."

Ruixiang thought for a moment, then turned back to ask her master, "I heard that the Third Young Master is also ill. How about making three servings?"

Lin Hairu said indifferently: "He's just a bastard. The old lady doesn't care about him, so why should I care about him?"

Ruixiang responded and went to give instructions to the kitchen.

Early in the morning, Xuezhi pulled Yining out of her warm bed and forced her to drink a bowl of medicine. She even had to eat a few sesame candies to overcome the bitter taste. But then she found Old Lady Luo, who had gotten up early, already dressed and waiting for her, chanting Buddhist scriptures.

The Luo family has the rule of visiting old lady Luo every morning and evening. Soon the children and grandchildren will come to pay their respects to her.

Ning sat drowsily on a round stool, waiting for Xuezhi to comb her hair. It was still dark outside, and she could faintly hear a few roosters crowing.

"Everyone will come to pay their respects to the old lady in a while. You live with her, but you must be polite." Xuezhi said to her while combing her hair.

After all, Yining was still young, so it was inevitable that she would doze off. Hearing this, she forced herself to stay awake and tried to look at herself in the mirror.

It is said that the mother of the little girl from Yining was famous for her beauty and talent in her time, so the little girl's facial features are very outstanding. Although she is very young, her skin is rosy and white, her cheeks are like chubby buns, and her facial features are extremely delicate. There is a small red mole on the end of her eyebrow, which makes her look even more lovely, like a lucky doll.

Xuezhi combed her hair into double buns and put a gold necklace on her.

Mrs. Luo looked at the little girl sitting on the armchair, rubbing her eyes with her little hands, and couldn't help laughing: "You went to bed so early last night, are you still sleepy?"
