Chapter 30

Mother Xu opened the lampshade, took off the hairpin from her bun and picked up the lamp wick.

There was a soft crackling sound, and the flame flickered, and the room suddenly became much brighter. Mother Xu covered the lampshade again and looked back to see that Mrs. Luo still had her eyes closed, clutching her Buddhist beads and remained silent.

"Don't worry, I've got someone watching over my sister. She'll be fine." Madam Xu comforted her gently, "But you should take care of yourself. You've clearly recovered a few days ago, and I'm afraid you'll be in trouble again after getting angry today."

Old Mrs. Luo shook her head and sighed, "I'm an old man, how can I be good or bad?"

She leaned tiredly against the pillow. She heard the rain outside still continuing and continued, "Did Shenyuan go to the ancestral hall?"

Mother Xu replied, "After the Third Young Master entered the ancestral hall, he knelt with Mei Jie'er."

Old Mrs. Luo nodded to indicate that she understood, and closed her eyes to continue counting the Buddhist beads.

Her mind raced. The rain outside hadn't stopped, and the ancestral hall was freezing. She wondered how Yining was doing, and whether she was afraid to kneel in the hall. She had always doted on her, and now she suddenly punished her, and she wondered if she would blame her.

When Yi Ning left, she turned around to look at her, but she was so hard-hearted that she wouldn't even look at her face. She was afraid that if she saw even a hint of pleading on Yi Ning's face, she would lose her temper. After all, this was her child, the one she held in her hands, afraid of the wind blowing away, the one she held in her mouth, afraid of melting.

It suddenly became noisy outside again.

Mrs. Luo sat up straight and stood up with Mrs. Xu’s hand: “Go and see if Yining is back!”

Outside the veranda, the maid folded up her umbrella. Luo Shenyuan came in, carrying Yi Ning, his clothes almost completely soaked. He didn't care, but walked ahead and laid Yi Ning on the Luohan bed. He touched her forehead and immediately turned back to order, "Go make some ginger soup."

The girl immediately responded and ran out.

Old Mrs. Luo came up and saw Yi Ning was drowsy. She couldn't help but feel worried: "Is it serious?"

Yi Ning forced herself to open her eyes. Seeing Mrs. Luo's worried expression, she felt an inexplicable sense of grievance. She whispered, "Grandma... I'm fine."

Just like a baby bird, he was attached to her without any complaints.

Mrs. Luo took a deep breath, tears welling up in her eyes. She said firmly, "You can't do this again. If you find anything, tell me. Don't make decisions on your own. If someone takes advantage of you and harms you, what will you do?"

Yining actually knew everything, but facing Mrs. Luo's tears, she couldn't say a word. She could only say obediently: "Grandma, I know..."

"Let me change my clothes." Xuezhi saw that Yining's clothes were also wet, so she hurriedly asked the little maid to get Yining's clothes.

In fact, only the hem of Yi Ning's skirt was wet. Instead, it was Luo Shenyuan who carried her back and shielded her from the rain. The back and shoulders of his gown were wet.

Luo Shen said, "Don't change your clothes yet. Light a stove and come over."

He stood up again. It was inconvenient for him to stay any longer. Luo Shenyuan said, "Since I've brought you back, Yining, I'll go back first."

Yining saw Luo Shenyuan's wet shoulders and remembered that when she came back just now, she was held in Luo Shenyuan's arms and was not wet at all.

Luo Shenyuan is about to take part in the Autumn Examination and cannot get sick.

"Third brother, you should go back and change your clothes." Yi Ning was also very concerned about him. "You need to study, so you can't catch a cold."

"Nothing," Luo Shenyuan said calmly. He went out with his umbrella and cloak, then seemed to remember something and turned back to Yining and said, "Drink the ginger soup while it's hot. Don't be so disgusted by it." Then he left.

Yining doesn't like ginger. She thinks it tastes weird and never eats it in her daily diet.

When did Luo Shenyuan notice...

Yi Ning didn't know, but as she watched his back disappear in the rainy night, she felt an indescribable feeling in her heart.

Mrs. Luo asked the maid to take off Yining's pants. Her knees were indeed red and swollen. Mrs. Xu had already found a coin-sized porcelain box and handed it to Mrs. Luo. She took some amber ointment from it, melted it with the warmth of her palms, and applied it to Yining's knees.

This ointment feels cool at first, but then there is a burning pain!

Yining couldn't help but dodge, but Mother Xu smiled and held Yining's shoulder. "Seventh Miss, this thing was brought back from Guizhou by someone when the old man was still alive. It's very effective in reducing swelling and blood stasis, and can even cure joint damage. It's just that the effect is a bit strong, so please bear with it."

There was only a small box of this stuff, and it had been stored for so many years without being used. It must be very precious! How could it be used to treat such a minor injury?

Yi Ning quickly stopped her and said, "Grandma, my injury is not serious. I will be fine after a few days of recuperation."

"I'm punishing you personally, so I'll naturally apply the medicine myself." Old Mrs. Luo looked at her and said, "Grandma is punishing you today. Do you know why? Do you understand?"

Seeing Mrs. Luo's gaze, Yi Ning nodded: "I know. Grandma is doing this for my own good..."

She hadn't finished her words yet. Old Lady Luo was probably even more worried about Yi Ning being left alone after her death. Then, all the doting she had shown her before had become a weapon to hurt her. Wasn't Chen also unhappy when she saw Yi Yu saying those things and yet indulged her? Luo Yi Lian looked so well-behaved and docile, but was she truly free of resentment?

Mrs. Luo sighed, "Your fourth sister is truly foolish. She did something wrong, but now she blames you for it. I'll punish you, and tomorrow your aunt will come to visit you. From now on, they won't dare to say anything like I'm doting on you too much."
