Chapter 39

Yining noticed a hint of fear in Aunt Qiao's tone.

Mother Zheng smiled slightly, then slowly said, "After all these years, Aunt Qiao still recognizes an old woman like me. I am old. I think Aunt Qiao has lived a good life these years. She has given birth to a son, which can be regarded as continuing the incense of the Luo family."

Aunt Qiao bit her lip, her eyes flickering.

Mother Zheng's words were not very polite, but how could she dare to argue with her? Back then, she had only plotted against Mother Zheng in a small way, but Mother Zheng had retaliated against her time and again without a word. So when Mother Zheng finally left the Luo family, Aunt Qiao was really relieved. She had thought that this person would never come back!

But why did she come back suddenly?

When Aunt Qiao saw the young Luo Yining beside her, she felt a chill in her heart.

Lin Hairu didn't understand the grudges involved. She had just learned that Mother Zheng was a good doctor and a kind woman, but she had never expected that Aunt Qiao, who always wanted to get whatever she wanted, would be afraid of Mother Zheng. Lin Hairu's good impression of Mother Zheng immediately increased a lot.

Aunt Qiao quickly calmed down. She was no longer the lonely and helpless Qiao Yuechan. Now she had a son and a daughter, and was doted on by Luo Chengzhang. No matter how powerful Mother Zheng was, she was already old. What was she afraid of? She smiled and said to Mother Zheng: "When Mother Zheng begged to leave, I thought I would never see you again. I didn't expect you to come back."

Mother Zheng smiled and said nothing.

Mrs. Chen came in and said that dinner was ready and asked the old lady to take a seat first.

Thinking about the conversation between Aunt Qiao and Mother Zheng, Yi Ning put down her bowl and chopsticks after eating a few bites. She got off the chair and did not let Xuezhi and the others follow her. Instead, she trotted into the east side room, where Mother Zheng was writing a prescription for Lin Hairu.

Mother Zheng had just finished writing a recipe for Atractylodes macrocephala when she saw Yi Ning standing at the doorway, watching her quietly. Light from the lanterns outside shone in, and she was only half the height of the door, her tiny shadow stretched out by the candlelight. Despite the bustle outside, it seemed so peaceful.

Mother Zheng felt both sad and tender in her heart. Minglan had passed away, leaving such a child all alone in the world. Even if there were so many people taking care of her, they were not her biological mother after all! A mother is irreplaceable.

She put down her pen, smiled and said to Yining, "Mei Jie'er, come here."

Like coaxing a small animal.

Yi Ning walked over slowly, wanting to ask Mother Zheng something. She looked up at Mother Zheng and said, "Grandma told me that you used to serve Mother."

Seeing that she was finally willing to get a little closer to her, Mother Zheng was moved. She nodded and asked, "Mei Jie'er, why did you come here alone? Where is the girl who took care of you?"

Yining shook her head and asked, "Mother Zheng, will you stay and take care of me?"

Mother Zheng was slightly taken aback by her question. She asked so directly, without the slightest hint of adult tact. It was this kind of question that made it difficult for her to answer. She had already made up her mind that no matter how the old lady tried to persuade her, she would just evade it calmly.

But looking at Yi Ning and Ming Lan's similar, clean little faces, how could she say those words?

Mother Zheng squatted down, put her arm around her shoulders, and said in a low voice: "Mei Jie'er, if I say I can't stay, will you...will you blame me?"

Yi Ning shook her head again. Mother Zheng had insisted on leaving the Luo family back then, and there must have been reasons for that. Although she wasn't sure what kind of person Mother Zheng was, from what she had seen, Mother Zheng wasn't the kind of person who was cold and indifferent. Besides, she didn't care.

"I don't blame Mother Zheng," Yining said, raising her head and speaking quietly, "Yining doesn't have a mother, and there's no one left by her mother. Yining has gotten used to it."

Mother Zheng smiled bitterly. She stroked Yining's hair, her expression surprisingly sad. "Mei Jie'er, you're still too young to understand. Sometimes people don't stay with you because they want to protect you..."

Yi Ning didn't understand what Mother Zheng meant. It was really strange. Why didn't she stay to protect herself?

He had to leave the Luo family, no matter what would happen to Xiao Yining. Was it to protect her?

Mother Zheng took a deep breath and said, "Mei Jie'er, although I can't stay, I brought someone here for you. If you like her, can you let her stay and take care of you?"

It was still very lively outside, but Old Mrs. Luo was supported by Mother Xu and stood outside the lattice, quietly listening to the voices inside.

After hearing this, Mother Xu's face turned pale and she was speechless for a long time.

Old Madam Luo gestured for her to sit down, and Madam Xu helped her inside. She spoke with some concern, "Old Madam, look at what Madam Zheng said... I'm afraid she won't stay no matter what. But I don't understand what Madam Zheng meant by those words..."

Mrs. Luo said calmly, "I've been thinking about this for so many years and still don't understand. How can you understand it just by listening to a few words? There are very few people in the world with the thoughts of Zheng. How can anyone know what she is thinking?"

Mother Xu sighed slowly and felt a chill in her heart.

She still refused to stay.
