Chapter 53

Yining almost choked again.

Lin Shilang, who would later become the great judge, sent her a box of oranges.

Lin Hairu quickly put down the half-peeled orange in her hand and patted her on the back: "Eat slowly, kid, you can even choke on bird's nest."

Yi Ning coughed a few times before asking, "I've never met my cousin Lin Mao, why did he give me oranges?"

Lin Hairu smiled and said, "He hasn't seen you, but I've been talking about you a lot since I came back. Everyone from your eldest cousin to your fifth cousin knows you. Do you remember the gold hairpin I gave you last time? That was from your second cousin. Your cousin Lin Mao said he wants to come over and see you, and his mother wants to send him over for me to discipline. I'm afraid you'll be able to see him soon."

Yining is young, so it’s no big deal when people give her things. She just thinks of them as gifts for a child.

Yi Ning finally calmed down, took the orange from her stepmother's hand and put a slice into her mouth. She almost forgot that the Lin family were all tough and playful people, so nothing they did was surprising.

The oranges are quite sweet, but they lack juice.

After Yi Ning returned, he picked up some oranges from a box and gave some to everyone in the second house in turn, and also gave several to Luo Yixiu.

When she woke up the next morning, she heard that Aunt Qiao had asked Luo Chengzhang to leave again last night, because Xuan Ge'er couldn't eat.

Yi Ning sneered when she heard this. Aunt Qiao actually used her child to win favor? When she arrived outside Lin Hairu's door, she overheard Lin Hairu and Ruixiang's daily routine, tossing and turning about that little hoof and that vixen.

But after Yi Ning entered the room, Lin Hairu stopped talking. Now that she had Yi Ning in her room, she was afraid that she would teach the child bad things. If such words came out of Yi Ning's mouth, Luo Shenyuan would probably come over and question her.

That morning, Aunt Qiao was about to come over to pay her respects. Luo Chengzhang came in right after her. Aunt Qiao gave Luo Chengzhang a bowl of shredded chicken porridge. Then she heard Yi Ning ask her, "Aunt Qiao, I heard that my brother wasn't feeling well again last night?"

Aunt Qiao stood beside Luo Chengzhang with a charming and graceful manner, and said helplessly: "I don't know why the child can't eat..."

Yi Ning glanced at Aunt Qiao's standing posture, then saw Lin Hairu also stopped drinking soy milk, and sighed silently. She decided to disgust Aunt Qiao, and said with a smile: "I don't know why. I think it's because the servants didn't take good care of me that my brother is uncomfortable."

Luo Yilian only ate half a cake and stopped eating. She took the cup of water from the maid to rinse her mouth, then said softly, "Seventh sister, you misunderstood. The maids in my aunt's room are all conscientious and responsible, and they have never been inconsiderate."

"That's hard to say." Yi Ning smiled innocently. "Aunt and Sixth Sister can't always look after my brother. I think it would be better if we do this..." She looked at Luo Chengzhang who was drinking porridge. "Bring my brother to mother's room to take care of him for a while. We will take good care of him, and he will definitely recover. What do you think, father?"

Luo Chengzhang had been extremely worried about his youngest son these past few days, and he thought what Yining said made sense. He nodded and said, "Yining is right. Xuan'er hasn't been feeling well lately. Why don't we bring him to Hai Ru first?"

Aunt Qiao's face turned pale when she heard this. She knelt down quickly and said, "Master, Xuan'er has never left me since he was born! This is absolutely unacceptable! And Madam has never liked Xuan'er..."

Luo Yilian also pleaded, "...My brother's illness is not serious, father, please have some pity on him!"

Lin Hairu knew that Yi Ning was helping her, so she immediately said, "This isn't a dangerous place, what are you worried about, Aunt Qiao?"

Yi Ning nodded and said, "Sixth sister, I am also concerned about Xuan'er's health. As soon as father heard that Xuan'er was ill, he rushed to see Aunt Qiao. Naturally, he felt sorry for Xuan'er."

Luo Chengzhang also felt that Aunt Qiao and Luo Yilian's reactions were excessive. It didn't matter who raised the child, and what Yi Ning said made sense.

He said to Aunt Qiao: "Just do as Yining says. I think Hai Ru treats Xuan'er very well. How could she not like him?" After hearing what Luo Chengzhang said, Aunt Qiao could only shut her mouth angrily. She knew that Luo Chengzhang would not change his mind once he made up his mind.

That afternoon, Xuan Ge'er was carried into the main house. Lin Hairu arranged for him to live in the east side room and assigned a capable maid to take care of him. She also specially selected a few little girls aged seven or eight to play with him and gave him many novel toys.

But at the beginning, Xuan Ge'er was still clamoring to find Aunt Qiao and his sister.

When Aunt Qiao heard about this, she burst into tears. She used to only come to pay her respects to Lin Hairu every two or three days, but now she couldn't wait to come every morning and evening, and when she came, she would stretch her neck to look east. But every time Aunt Qiao came, Xuan Ge'er was taken to the yard to play.

After all this ordeal, Aunt Qiao lost several pounds.

Xuan Ge'er was only a four-year-old after all, and with someone to play with him, he soon forgot about crying. The kitchen cooked his favorite dishes, such as egg custard and fish congee, and he grew plump and white, without even a headache or fever.

He didn't like Yining at first, but ever since Yining played Baisuo with him, he grabbed Yining's sleeve and asked her to teach him how to play all day long.

When Luo Shenyuan came to pay his respects to Lin Hairu, he saw Yi Ning and Xuan Ge'er huddled together on the Luohan bed. Yi Ning patted his hands and said, "That's not how you pull strings!"

Xuan Ge'er pouted and said unhappily, "Seventh sister, you hit me again!" But he just complained and got back into it.

Luo Shenyuan raised the corner of his mouth and went next door to discuss the matters on the farm with Lin Hairu. Lin Hairu was doing something inappropriate, so he had to talk to her about it.
