Chapter 55

The weather had just warmed up, and Lin Hairu was directing the maids to clean the room again, replace the Xiangfei bamboo curtains, and the jacquard kudzu cushions on the Luohan bed. She was just about to replace the things in Yining's room as well, as the things she had bought for her would be of use, when a maid came through the corridor with a message in her heart.

"Madam, the two cousins are already at the door!"

Lin Hairu took a sip of tea and said indifferently, "Didn't sister-in-law only send Lin Mao here? Who else came?"

Her eldest sister-in-law wrote her many letters, praising the Luo family's learning to the skies. Her only motive was to quickly pack up her youngest son and send him to him. She heard he couldn't stay in Yangzhou any longer. Last time, he burned half the street while refining elixirs in his shop, so enraged that Old Master Lin chased him with his cane. Although the Lin family paid compensation, he couldn't leave the house now. Otherwise, why would Lin Mao be willing to leave Yangzhou? He was a local tyrant in Yangzhou, and coming to Baoding would restrict his movements and hinder his ability to flourish.

Lin Hairu felt that Lin Mao was also a nuisance and didn't want to take over at all. But since he said he was here for a wedding, what else could she say?

"It's the cousin young master of the Gu family." The old woman continued to smile, "Cousin young master Lin met cousin young master of the Gu family on the road, and the two of them came here together."

Master Gu? He's Yining's cousin.

Lin Hairu had long heard of the Gu family. Grandpa Gu had been the current emperor's tutor, and the Gu family was the largest family in Zhending, so large that even a sneeze would send the city trembling. Yining's uncle was also the Minister of Works, and was said to be highly regarded by a certain cabinet minister.

She immediately became a little nervous. Why did someone from the Gu family come? They had to be treated well. Don't neglect Young Master Gu. Lin Hairu changed her attitude and told the maid to go to the kitchen and ask her to make more delicious dishes. Then she went to tell Yi Ning. At first, she thought it was just Lin Mao coming, so she didn't intend to treat him well.

Yining stretched out on the Luohan bed to rest. Because the eldest wife was too busy preparing for the marriage, she simply gave her husband a month's vacation, and she was free again.

She planned to have a good sleep. She was so tired that she kept dozing off after listening to Luo Yixiu's accusations against Luo Yiyu for half the night.

Just as she wrapped herself in the quilt, she heard Xuezhi say that her two cousins had come. They came over and lifted her quilt, asking her to go to the main room quickly.

Yining wondered in a daze, where did this cousin come from?

Yi Ning was pulled up by Xue Zhi to comb her hair. On the day she finished mourning, Lin Hairu brought a lot of pearl hairpins and jewelry to her room, and there were several boxes that jingled and clanged. It was obvious that Lin Hairu had been holding back for a long time. She had an unusual enthusiasm for stuffing things into Yi Ning's room.

Xuezhi chose a pearl headband for Yining to wear and took Yining to the main room.

Outside the main house, a corridor over the water flowed, with a pavilion nestled in the middle. This spot offered the best views. The lake rippled, small lotus leaves twirled, and in the distance, a pink and white flower stand. Summer brought a cooler breeze. Before Yining even reached the main house, she saw two people standing in the pavilion, seemingly gazing into the distance.

One of them turned around upon hearing the noise, with a faint smile on his face, narrow eyebrows and beautiful almond-shaped eyes. Unconventionally, he was wearing a Taoist robe. Seeing Yining standing in the distance, he smiled and turned away.

In just one glance, Yining recognized the future Lin Qingtian.

He once cheated civil and military officials out of nearly one million taels of silver to provide disaster relief, and became famous overnight. Yining also saw him once.

The other was tall and graceful, with her hair tied up in a jade crown. From behind, she looked elegant and graceful. She seemed to be so absorbed in the scenery that she didn't even turn her head.

Because they were too far away, Yi Ning didn't call them first and entered the main room first. Coincidentally, Luo Yixiu and Aunt Qiao were paying their respects to Lin Hairu. Xuan Ge'er, now over five years old, had grown strong and behaved much better in recent years, calling Yi Ning "Seventh Sister." Thirteen-year-old Luo Yilian was slender and graceful, with a beautiful, fair face and a pair of piercing eyes that were truly stunning. Ever since Qingqu cured her of her fainting spell, her complexion had become much more rosy, and she could eat two bowls of rice at each meal without gaining weight, much to the envy of Yi Ning, who would gain weight even if she ate more.

When Luo Yilian saw the young girl, he understood why Luo Chengzhang couldn't help himself when he kept Qiao Yuechan by his side.

In terms of looks alone, Luo Yilian was even better than Luo Yiyu. As for Yining herself, although she had a standard figure, her face still had some baby fat, which made her look cute and innocent. However, I heard that Yining's biological mother, Minglan, was a famous beauty, so I thought she wouldn't be too bad.

Luo Yilian was drinking a cup of Tremella soup, and when she lowered her brows, she saw two more people coming in.

The leader had phoenix eyes that always held a smile, looking very approachable and dressed in a Taoist robe. The other, however, was extremely elegant, with a jade crown and hair tied up, looking handsome and clear-headed. He wore a moon-white straight gown and stood with his hands behind his back.

Lin Hairu smiled and invited the young man behind her to come forward. She asked affectionately, "But Mr. Gu Si? I've never seen you before. I'm glad to see you today. You're truly a handsome man. You must be tired after coming all this way."

Master Yuebai said gently, "Aunt, you don't have to be polite. Just call me Jingming."

Lin Mao, who was standing nearby, said leisurely, "Aunt, you're being too partial! Your own nephew is also exhausted, why don't you ask a few questions?"

Lin Hairu glared at him and said, "Shut up! You've squandered so much of our family's money, and you still have the nerve to speak!"

Gu Jingming chuckled, becoming even more handsome and gentle: "I came here with my cousin Lin. Sorry to bother my aunt."

"Don't bother me, don't bother me." Lin Hairu was happy when she saw Gu Jingming. Look at how the young master of other families looks like, and then look at her irrelevant Lin Mao. Why doesn't she have a nephew like Gu Jingming? Lin Hairu looked at Gu Jingming and became more and more satisfied. She really wanted to catch him and make him her nephew.
