Chapter 86
Old Mrs. Wei didn't know that Ting'er was sick until the evening.
Before the guests left, she rushed over with her men and sat by the bed, holding Ting'er's hand, feeling distressed and blaming herself. Fortunately, Ting'er's fever had subsided, and the doctor had checked him out and told the mother-in-law to take him home and give him medicine.
Old Madam Wei stayed behind. She said to Wei Ling, "...A few years ago, I suggested bringing Ting'er to my place to raise him, but you said you were worried it would disturb my recovery. It's okay if this happens once or twice... but what if it happens again? Why don't you pack up Ting'er's things tomorrow and move him to my place? My East Warm Pavilion is empty, perfect for Ting'er to stay in."
Wei Ling stood in front of her and said, "Mother, don't worry. I've already discussed it with Yining... Ting'er will move in with Yining, and Yining will take care of him from now on."
Old Mrs. Wei was a little shocked.
Yining had only been back at the Duke of Ying's mansion for half a month, and she wasn't very old either.
"Yining has agreed." Wei Ling didn't care what the old lady thought and continued, "It's better than having a group of maids and old women looking after him."
Ting'er was the master, and no matter how much the maids and servants controlled him, they dared not act too presumptuously. But Yining was different. She could discipline her brother if he was disobedient, and she could care for him if he was sick. These were things that servants were not allowed to do.
Wei Ling recalled the moment he first came in and saw Ting'er lying in Yi Ning's arms. He had never seen this child rely on anyone before, probably because Yi Ning was his sister.
Old Mrs. Wei coughed. From her son's tone, it seemed as if he was afraid that she would object. But as long as it made sense, how could she object?
She beckoned Yining to come over to her and asked her softly, "Yining, are you really willing to take care of your little brother? Aren't you afraid that he'll act up?"
Yi Ning said, "It's okay for children to be naughty. I was naughty as a child, too. My former grandmother raised me, and because she loved me, I gradually became sensible."
This was the first time Mrs. Wei had heard her mention Mrs. Luo. She smiled and said, "I've heard of your grandmother, too. She was from the Xu family of Baoding. She was quite famous back then. She raised you well. If I could meet her in person, I would really like to thank her."
When Yi Ning heard Old Lady Wei mention her, her heart twitched slightly. She whispered, "When I was ten, the Luo family's grandmother passed away."
Old Mrs. Wei was stunned. She didn't know that the person who raised Yining was gone when she was so young. When she was about to say something to Yining, Yining had already turned around and asked the maid to change her a cup of hot tea.
A little later, Zhao Mingzhu also got the news and hurried over from Fangshan. She had originally seen Cheng Lang and wanted to say a few words to him, but she chased him out and didn't see Cheng Lang. Instead, he started playing with the daughter of the Dingyang Earl. By the time she learned that Ting'er was ill, it was too late.
She hurriedly bowed to Wei Ling and Old Lady Wei.
Wei Ling just hummed calmly, and Old Madam Wei scolded her: "You are too childish. You are already such a grown-up girl, you should be more sensible! And you are still hard to find."
Zhao Mingzhu had already felt wronged by what she had been told today, and when Old Lady Wei said that to her, tears welled up in her eyes. Seeing her feeling wronged, Old Lady Wei sighed again.
This girl should be the older sister, the more mature and sensible one in the family, but instead she is raised to be delicate and can't stand the slightest bit of anger.
Mrs. Wei held out her hand, and Zhao Mingzhu quickly helped her up. Mrs. Wei said, "Brother Ting will move to Yining in the future. If you miss your brother, come to Yining to see him."
When Zhao Mingzhu heard what Old Lady Wei said, she knew that she no longer blamed herself.
She smiled and said, "I must come to see my brother, so that he won't be bored here and have no one to play with!"
Mrs. Wei was about to leave, and Zhao Mingzhu followed her out of Yining's yard. As she stepped to the door, she saw Luo Yining glance at her coldly.
Zhao Mingzhu didn't like Luo Yining. If someone suddenly came back and took your things for no reason, you would also dislike her. Of course, she knew that Luo Yining would not like her either. But this was the first time she saw Luo Yining show such coldness towards her.
She recalled what she had heard in the hall that day, and her hands clenched slightly in her sleeves. Even if Luo Yining returned, so what? She was favored by Old Madam Wei and even had Cheng Lang as her fiancé. How could her treatment in the mansion be any worse than Luo Yining's? She had always considered herself a legitimate daughter of the Duke of Yingguo, and she had long been accustomed to such treatment.
Wei Ling looked at the girl in silence, and then he remembered that she had been busy all day and hadn't even had dinner, so he asked someone to bring her food.
Yi Ning had been feeling hungry just now, but now she was too hungry and had no appetite. She took a few bites of rice and refused to eat. Wei Ling saw that she had taken a few bites and took her bowl and said, "You have a cat's appetite! You only eat a few bites and then you stop eating. You can't do that. Eat more."
Yining was in low spirits and could only force herself to drink the soup Wei Ling served her, but she refused to eat anymore.
Wei Ling sighed as he looked at her slender body. He began to worry about the girl's appetite.
He knew that willow-like waists were the fashion among the women in the capital, but Yi Ning couldn't have that. She needed to have some flesh. What if after arriving at the Duke of Ying's mansion, he made her thinner?
Wei Ling decided to go back and instruct the kitchen staff to change the dishes for her every day.
Only after the Duke of England left did Yi Ning ask Zhenzhu to clean up the west wing for Ting'er to live in. She leaned against the window lattice, gazing at the heavy snow falling outside, and suddenly missed Lin Hairu and her third brother. Lin Hairu's child was due soon, but she didn't know whether it was a boy or a girl... Her third brother had said he was coming to the capital for the imperial examinations, and she wondered when he would arrive.
