At that time, he was a guest at the Shunde prefect's residence. He saw her kneeling on the gravel road feeding a puppy and watched her quietly for a long time.
The prefect's son said to him, "Lu Si, what are you looking at?"
A bastard son of a marquis, he lived a low-key life within the mansion. The marquis' wife was a powerful figure, fighting off the other bastards to the point of silence. His mother, originally her personal maid, had never dared to get close to her after giving birth to him. He looked like a wild dog, and when he was young, even when bullied by his brothers, he would smile and fawn over them. Outside, however, everyone respected him, and no one dared to offend him. Having grown up through hardship, he now found it strangely enjoyable to see her feeding the puppies.
"You're too nosy!" He stood up. "I'm not going for the horse race today. You go by yourself."
He didn't hear the prefect's son calling him. He walked out, quietly stood behind Luo Yining, leaned over and said to her: "If you feed it again, it will die."
Yining was startled by him, and the spoon in her hand accidentally touched the puppy's mouth, and the puppy whimpered in pain.
She asked angrily, "Why are you scaring people?"
Lu Jiaxue felt like he was seducing a child, and teased her with a smile: "Its mouth is rotten. If you don't bandage it, it will die if you feed it again. Are you stupid?"
The stranger, dressed in splendid attire, looked either wealthy or noble. Even if he wasn't the prefect's son, he was still a distinguished guest. But his words were too rude, and she couldn't afford to offend him. Yi Ning didn't want to pay attention to him, so she stood up, holding the puppy, and prepared to move.
Wow, you really have a temper.
"If you beg me, I'll help you save it." Lu Jiaxue said slowly. In fact, he had no sympathy for the puppy, he just wanted to tease her. He was actually three or four years older than her.
She hesitated for a moment, then stopped and asked him, "Are you going to take it to the clinic for bandaging?"
"Of course." Lu Jiaxue said, "You can't go out, but I can go out at will."
The puppy lay in her arms, its head hanging pitifully. It had been so lively when she first bought it, but now it trembled with fear at the slightest touch. She looked at the puppy and said, "Then I beg you to take it to the vet."
It was so easy that Lu Jiaxue lost some interest. He reached out to take it, thinking it was just a matter of words. He would throw it to the clinic when he went to go for a walk, leaving a few coins and forgetting about it for a while.
It wasn't until she lingered at the door that Lu Jiaxue saw her while drinking with the prefect's son. His heart skipped a beat—her dog had been left at the clinic for several days.
He went out, and Yining came up to him excitedly and asked, "Is the dog okay? Can it eat?"
Lu Jiaxue finally remembered that she had to go check on her dog, so she went to the clinic with the prefect's son. The clinic, unaware of his identity, said the dog had refused to eat and had been thrown out half-dead, likely to be made into dog meat soup. Lu Jiaxue smashed the clinic's sign, and upon returning, Luo Yining was eager for him to bring back the dog.
Lu Jiaxue actually felt a little guilty and lied to her: "It's being well taken care of in the clinic, what are you doing back here?"
"You're right." Luo Yining was very happy. She couldn't bear to see cats and dogs suffer, so she was happy as long as nothing happened.
She told him sincerely, "Thank you, you are a good man."
She felt that her dog was alive and well somewhere in the world, and that was enough.
Later, the prefect's son let it slip that because the dog they sent died, Lu Jiaxue had smashed the store's signboard, and the store owner was afraid to ask for compensation. He said he was a gangster.
She was depressed after she knew about it, and Lu Jiaxue actually saw her crying. She squatted at the place where she picked up the dog, tears streaming down her face. Lu Jiaxue felt guilty and distressed. He walked over and said to her: "Don't cry, I will compensate you for the dog."
She was not moved at all and kept insisting: "I don't want another dog. You said you saved it, so give my dog back to me."
Lu Jiaxue felt that she looked as pitiful as a puppy, and he had a strange feeling in his heart. He wanted to take her home and raise her well.
Seeing her crying, he placed his hand on top of her head and tentatively patted it to comfort her.
She was startled, looked up at him as if he were a lecher, and then she moved away. Lu Jiaxue even smiled at her.
But later on, you and he had to go back to the capital. When you wanted to see her for the last time, she had already left the prefectural residence and returned to Shunde countryside with their grandmother and others.
He had thought that when she reached marriage age, he would ask her to marry him. Because of that strange feeling, it was hard to describe, numb and tender.
Later, when they were discussing marriage, Lu Jiaxue was surprised to find that she didn't recognize him. He figured the little girl had never properly raised her head to see what he looked like, so she couldn't even remember him.
When he successfully married her, he was a bit surprised to see her dignified and virtuous wife. It wasn't until they got to know each other better that she gradually relaxed her guard, like a cat exploring its surroundings, quietly revealing her true nature. Lu Jiaxue, feeling affection for her, immediately acted as if he didn't see anything, even accepting it. This completely lowered her guard.
So the cat was not only willing to show its claws, but also willing to sleep on his lap and even scratch his trouser legs, because it had already determined that he was harmless.
After hearing his words, Luo Yining was stunned for a long time.
She had never known that Lu Jiaxue had ever met her. He had even intended to marry her. Now that she thought about it, it seemed like they had done it when they were children. As for that man, his face was vague in her mind, with no concrete image.
Lu Jiaxue's face was heavy, his voice hoarse. "Why do you think I wanted to kill you? Was it to provoke Xie Min? ... I put so much thought into marrying you. After you died, I didn't even dare to look at your tablet. Do you think I would kill you for this?"
