Chapter 141

Yi Ning listened thoughtfully. When dinner was about to begin, she went to the front hall to look for Wei Ling, who was still talking in the flower hall. She then went around to his courtyard to wait for him. Outside the corridor, many willow trees were planted, and the cool sunlight filtered through the cracks, creating a warm and comfortable atmosphere.

Her little cockatoo was hanging under the eaves, and when it saw her it became affectionate and flapped its wings.

Yining fed it water from a small dish and stroked its fur. The girl who was taking care of the parrot smiled and said, "After you left, the Duke took it over and raised it. He talks to it every day to keep it company."

After hearing what the maid said, Yining became more interested in persuading her father to get married.

Wei Ling arrived a moment later. His daughter, whom he had raised for only two years, was now married off, and he was incredibly reluctant to let her go. He saw her playing with a parrot under the eaves, offering it brown rice to peck at, but it couldn't reach it. The parrot fluttered its wings in frustration, yet she still smiled. It seemed as if she was still in the mansion.

"Be careful or it will peck you." Wei Ling said with a smile.

"It wouldn't dare." Yi Ning put the brown rice back into the small dish and came forward to say, "I brought you musk knee and elbow pads, as well as a few spies Qiu Lubai as a gift. I'm sending them all to you. The maid just told me that after I left, you started drinking at night again. Drinking at night is bad for your health, so please don't drink too much."

"You are still controlling me." Wei Ling said with a smile, and asked the girl to follow him into the house.

Seeing that his study was still the same, Yi Ning sat down across from him. She pondered for a moment and said, "Father, my grandmother just told me about your marriage."

Wei Ling nodded. He didn't say anything for a while, staring at the sunlight outside the partition for a long time in a daze.

Years ago, he had a child in an accident. He was only in his early twenties then, full of youthful vigor. He could still see that woman's indifferent face. She rarely smiled, and she didn't seem to like him much. He always felt that she didn't like him. She never told him anything, yet gave birth to two children and passed away without hesitation.

If she hadn't married earlier, he would have taken good care of her and made her happy. How could he have treated her like Luo Chengzhang?

Why did she, such a good person, live her life so hastily and sadly?

What was she thinking before she died? Did she have some attachment to him? Perhaps she did, otherwise why would she be willing to bear his child?

Wei Ling often pondered these questions, but fourteen years had passed, and no amount of pondering was worth it; he couldn't hear the answers. Wei Ling fixed his gaze on Yi Ning. How strange! This child resembled both him and Ming Lan, the child of both. His voice deepened, "Meimei, I always think of your mother..."

"Your personality is different from your mother's. She is more calm and quiet," Wei Ling said.

This was the first time Yining heard him mention Minglan. He rarely mentioned her on weekdays.

"I try to talk to her, but she always ignores me. Occasionally, I'll make her laugh, but she'll quickly put on a stern face. After all, to her, I'm just a bandit..." Wei Ling smiled and tapped the table, his eyes fixed. "But she has a soft heart. I know she's soft-hearted and can't bear to hurt others or blame others."

Yi Ning was stunned for a moment, then walked up to him and took his hand. "Father..."

Hearing his words, she was suddenly moved. She had never met Minglan, but she knew he must be a very good person. Sometimes she felt that her good life was also due to the blessings her mother had created during her lifetime. Because people always said to her with admiration, "Your mother is really a very good person."

Wei Ling turned around and smiled, patting her hand: "It's okay, it's been so many years."

"Let me think about the marriage a little longer," Wei Ling said. "Your grandmother has a point. We can't leave this mansion without someone to manage it. Don't worry, father knows what's going on."
