Chapter 13 Treating Legs
Disappointed, Feng Lin left. Just as he was about to walk out of the lobby, he heard a polite voice from ahead: "Is this young master here for a medical consultation?"
"Huh?" Feng Lin was taken aback and looked at the other person. He was a young man dressed in fine clothes. He had a strong aura, but his attitude was very gentle.
Feng Lin didn't recognize him: "You are...?"
The men recognized him and all wanted to pay their respects, but the second-in-command stopped them with a look.
"Oh, I'm from Huichuntang," the second owner said with a friendly smile. "Is this young master feeling unwell?"
Feng Lin shook his head: "No, I'm not sick. I'm here to seek medical advice on behalf of my classmate."
"May I ask your name, sir?"
"My name is Feng Lin." Feng Lin cupped his hands in greeting.
"My surname is Hu," the second landlord replied with a bow.
"So it's Dr. Hu." The other person said he was from the clinic, so Feng Lin naturally assumed that he was the doctor there.
The second landlord didn't correct him, but smiled and said, "Then may I ask where your classmate is feeling unwell?"
Feng Lin sighed, "His leg was injured half a year ago. He consulted many doctors, but none of them could cure him. I thought only Dr. Zhang from the clinic could cure him. But I heard... Dr. Zhang will never come to the clinic again."
"Who said he's not coming?" The second landlord coughed lightly and said, "He'll come tomorrow!"
"Consultation fee..."
"One hundred coins, fixed price!"
cough!
All the staff in the room choked.
Feng Lin also choked: "One hundred coins?"
"Is it expensive?" The second landlord blinked and quickly said, "I misspoke, it's ten coins!"
Feng Lin: "..."
Guys: "..."
Even if Feng Lin was stupid, he knew that seeing a doctor was very expensive. Not to mention Dr. Zhang from the capital, even a barefoot itinerant doctor from the countryside couldn't be paid for with just ten coins.
"Didn't you say that Dr. Zhang's consultation fee is ten taels?" he asked doubtfully.
The second landlord remained unfazed: "In-house consultations are cheaper than house calls."
"So much cheaper...?"
"Our clinic has had patients die from our illnesses, business is bad, it's the off-season!"
Feng Lin again: "..."
The guys were again speechless.
Feng Lin immediately went to the village and told Xiao Liulang about the consultation: "...The consultation fee is only ten coins, and the cost of the herbal medicine is separate. Their business is not good right now, so I estimate that the cost of the herbal medicine will not be too expensive."
The clinic's business has indeed been impacted, but it's still hard to believe that it's suddenly so cheap.
Feng Lin excitedly said, "I asked Manager Wang afterwards, and he said the same thing. It's definitely true, so just wait and see. I have a day off at the end of the month, and I'll go with you!"
They've even set a date; it seems it's for real.
Three days later, the exam results came out, and Gu Dashun came in second.
The candidates came from all over the country, numbering in the hundreds, including many children from wealthy families. They had been tutored since childhood, and their learning conditions were far superior to Gu Dashun's. For Gu Dashun to still manage to come in second place was truly a great honor for the Gu family.
Especially since the exam questions were personally set by the Dean, it's being spread throughout the academy that the Dean is likely to make a public appearance and recruit personal disciples from this batch of candidates.
Gu Dashun felt that his chances were very high.
"How did Liulang do on the exam?" Old Master Gu asked.
Gu Dashun laughed and said, "He passed the exam too."
It's second, but it's from last.
One hundred people were admitted this time, and Xiao Liulang ranked ninety-ninth.
Thinking that Xiao Liulang had been left so far behind, Gu Dashun couldn't help but feel a little proud, but he said, "He hasn't been to the private school for half a year. He has been studying hard at home all by himself. It's already very impressive that he was able to get this score."
"He studied so hard for so long and almost failed the exam. It shows that studying requires talent, and in this respect, you are much better than Liu Lang." It was rare for Grandpa Gu to say so much. Originally, he didn't dare to have too many expectations for Gu Dashun, but now that the results are out, he feels that Gu Dashun is almost certain to pass the autumn exam next year.
Grandpa Gu was very happy and asked his second son to go to town and buy two catties of pork belly.
Today it was the second wife's turn to cook. Knowing that most of the pork belly served would end up in Gu Dashun's stomach, Liu secretly hid two pieces in a jar.
"Mother, you're hiding meat!"
Gu Xiaoshun, with his sharp eyes, darted in.
Liu was so startled that she nearly knocked the jar over. She turned around and slapped Gu Xiaoshun, saying, "Keep your voice down! What are you yelling about!"
Gu Xiaoshun raised an eyebrow and said, "I want to eat meat."
"No!" Liu turned her back and protected the jar tightly.
Gu Xiaoshun snorted, "If you don't give it to me, I'll tell Grandpa and Grandma that you're hiding meat!"
"You..." Liu raised her fist in anger. Other people have sons to enjoy, but she had a son to make herself angry.
Liu knew that Gu Xiaoshun was capable of exposing her, so she reluctantly opened the jar, cut off a small piece, and gave it to him.
Gu Xiaoshun hadn't even tasted it before it was gone: "Why did you only give me half a bite? There were two big pieces in the jar!"
"That's for Ershun!" Of her two sons, only Ershun was willing to study, and Liu was counting on Ershun to be successful in the future so she could benefit from his success. She couldn't count on Xiaoshun; he was a complete rascal, and she would be grateful if he didn't squander the family fortune in the future.
Gu Xiaoshun wanted to get some meat for his sister, but he couldn't just grab his mother's jar by force. So, when his mother wasn't looking, he lifted the lid, grabbed a few steamed buns, and ran away!
"You little beast!" Liu was furious.
White flour steamed buns are a good thing too. Only Gu Dashun can eat them on weekdays; the rest of them eat cornmeal.
Enraged, Liu grabbed a stick and chased after him, but Gu Xiaoshun was too fast and disappeared in an instant.
Gu Xiaoshun ran to his sister in one breath, his hands red from being scalded by the steamed bun.
"Sister!" He rushed into the kitchen, but suddenly smelled something and froze.
He sniffed: "It smells so good, sis, what are you cooking?"
"pheasant."
She sold two of the three pheasants she had last time, and kept the remaining one for a few days before killing it today.
"What are you holding?" Gu Jiao asked, looking at his hand.
"Steamed buns." Gu Xiaoshun lowered his head. He had wanted to give her something nice to eat, but his sister was already eating chicken, so these few white steamed buns suddenly seemed a bit inadequate...
Gu Jiao took a bowl and told him to put the steamed buns in, then brought over a basin of cold water. "Put your hands in."
"Oh." Gu Xiaoshun didn't ask why, and obediently did as he was told. As soon as his hand was soaked in the water, the pain was gone.
"Let's eat here," Gu Jiao said to him again.
"Huh?" Gu Xiaoshun was taken aback.
"I saved you a bowl, and I was just thinking about how to deliver it. Now that you're here, I don't have to make a trip." Gu Jiao said as she opened the cupboard, took out a bowl of chicken, and poured it back into the pot.
Looking at the bowl of chicken, Gu Xiaoshun knew that his sister wasn't just saying that to make it up because he was there; she genuinely saved it for him.
There was a whole, large chicken leg inside; he saw it all.
Gu Xiaoshun's nose suddenly felt a little sore.
He came up behind Gu Jiao, bent down, pressed his forehead against her back, and rubbed against her, saying, "Sister, how can you be so good to me? Do you think it's possible that you're actually my real mother?"
Gu Jiao: "..."
Good morning, everyone.
