Chapter 15 Slap in the Face
Gu Dashun's excellent academic performance is undoubtedly due to his intelligence and diligence.
He had gotten up earlier than Zhou Shi and Gu Yue'e. He was reading in his room when he heard his father calling him. He put down his book and came out: "Father, what's wrong?"
As soon as he finished speaking, he saw the middle-aged man outside the door.
He vaguely felt that the other person's face looked familiar, but he couldn't remember where he had seen him before. What he was sure of was that the other person's clothes and demeanor were extraordinary, and he wondered what business the other person had with them.
"Dad, what did you just say? I was studying and didn't hear you clearly." He turned to Gu Changhai and said.
Gu Changhai pointed at the middle-aged man and laughed, "This is the manager of Tianxiang Academy. He's here to deliver your admission documents!"
"Admission documents?" Gu Dashun had the same question as Gu Changhai. The academy had already notified them that the results would be released three days after the exam, and the admission documents would be issued on the seventh day. They could go to the east gate of the academy to pick them up.
There were still three days left until the seven-day period, so how did they get out? And even delivered themselves to my door?
The middle-aged man realized what was happening and smiled, saying, "So there is another examinee in your household. However, I'm afraid you've misunderstood. The document I have is not for this examinee, but for another young master of the Gu family."
Gu Changhai said strangely, "Only Da Shun in our family is a test taker."
The middle-aged man maintained a polite smile throughout: "I didn't explain myself very clearly just now. May I ask, is Young Master Gu Xiaoshun here?"
The father and son were completely dumbfounded.
It took Gu Changhai a while to find his voice: "You...you must be mistaken? Gu Xiaoshun didn't take the exam."
Gu Xiaoshun is a scoundrel! A shameless rogue! He would never take the exam in his eight lifetimes!
Even if you take the exam, you absolutely won't pass!
The middle-aged man smiled gently and said, "I'm not mistaken, it is Gu Xiaoshun. He was personally recommended by my master and admitted to school without taking the exam."
Gu Changlu, who had just gotten up, heard his son's name and came over, saying, "What's wrong with Xiaoshun? Did he get into trouble again? That brat! I'm going to go beat him up!"
Gu Changlu had just stood up, looking truly disheveled, but the middle-aged man's smile remained unchanged: "My master went up the mountain and accidentally tripped and fell, but fortunately, Young Master Gu came to his rescue. So, it's settled then. Please trouble the two gentlemen to give the enrollment documents to Young Master Gu, and he will enroll in four days."
“Our family can’t afford two tuition fees!” Gu Changhai suddenly said.
Gu Changlu was still confused and didn't quite understand what had happened.
The middle-aged man glanced at Gu Dashun, then at Gu Changhai. This time, the smile was gone from his eyes: "The document states that tuition is waived. In addition, I have prepared the books and academy uniform; please pass them on to Young Master Gu."
While his own father and second uncle didn't notice, Gu Dashun did. They addressed him as "this examinee," but always referred to Gu Xiaoshun as "Young Master Gu."
Moreover, he came in second place, and the other party didn't even know it was his home.
Gu Dashun's expression was not very good.
He wanted to ask the other party and the identity of the master in detail, but the middle-aged man handed a rosewood brocade box to Gu Changlu and then got into the carriage and left.
Gu Changlu was a little dazed: "Big brother, that person...did he say that Xiao Shun...can also go to school?"
The whole family found out about it at breakfast.
"When did you go up the mountain? Who did you rescue? Why didn't you tell your family?" Liu asked a series of questions.
"I...how would I know? I just...saved him." His sister wouldn't let him tell anyone, so he had to take the blame. But he hadn't expected things to turn out like this. How was he able to go to school?
"Well, since there's no tuition fee, let Xiao Shun go. That way, he won't be causing trouble all the time," Gu Changlu said.
“He’s gone, who’s going to do the work in the fields?” Zhou complained.
It's free, but if there are fewer people working in the fields, they'll be the ones who get tired!
Gu Dashun looked at Zhou Shi and said, "Mother, it's a good thing to have another scholar in the family. After school, I can help with the chores."
“How could I ask you to do this?” Zhou refused. Her son was born to study, not to toil in the fields!
Liu didn't like hearing this. So, her son was a nobleman, but her son was lowly? However, Gu Xiaoshun was indeed useless. If Ershun's studies were hindered, Liu would retort.
“However… Xiao Shun needs to change his temperament; at least he should be able to sit still like Er Shun,” Gu Da Shun said again.
His words struck a chord with everyone. Indeed, with Gu Xiaoshun's temperament, how could he possibly study well? He might offend the teacher and cause Gu Dashun to suffer the consequences.
"How about... we let Ershun read it?" Liu asked.
Er Shun is smarter and more disciplined than Xiao Shun. If you let him study, he'll definitely become a scholar!
Actually, Zhou Shi still disagreed somewhat. She felt that Er Shun only seemed eager to learn, but in reality, he hadn't absorbed any of the knowledge when Da Shun explained problems to him several times.
He wasn't cut out for studying either; it was just Liu's wishful thinking that she dreamed of being a scholar's wife through Ershun.
But none of the men in the family objected, so Zhou didn't say anything.
Throughout the entire process, no one asked Gu Xiaoshun for his opinion.
Three days later, one morning, Xiao Liulang changed into a brand new academy uniform.
Gu Jiao had seen others wear this academy uniform before, including Feng Lin and many students who came from the academy, but none of them were as tall and slender as Xiao Liulang, dressed in white as snow, with such handsome features.
Truly, he is a gentleman of unparalleled elegance and grace.
A moment later, Gu Jiao's gaze fell on his feet.
When Gu Jiao noticed that he was wearing the new shoes she had bought for him, she smiled.
"Does it fit?" Gu Jiao asked.
"Hmm." Xiao Liulang nodded lightly.
Gu Jiao handed him her cane and they went out together.
When they arrived at the village entrance, Uncle Luo's oxcart was already waiting. There weren't many people going to town today; besides the two of them, there were only Gu Dashun and Gu Ershun.
The two of them also put on their hospital uniforms.
Gu Jiao had told Xiao Liulang about Gu Xiaoshun saving someone with connections at the academy, so they both knew that Gu Xiaoshun should be the one going to the academy today.
However, neither of them showed much surprise when they saw Gu Ershun, who was wearing a uniform that was obviously a size too small, appear on the oxcart, as if they had expected the Gu family to do such a shameless thing.
Gu Jiao gave a cold laugh.
Xiao Liulang rummaged through his bundle and found that Gu Jiao had given him another pair of copper coins, this time twenty.
"Hmph!" Gu Ershun rolled his eyes at them.
The oxcart soon arrived near the academy.
"Let's stop here and walk over ourselves," Gu Dashun said.
Xiao Liulang and Gu Jiao stayed at the entrance of the academy.
After Xiao Liulang entered the academy, Gu Jiao carried a basket and went to the market.
