Chapter 29 A Trap
The next day, after Gu Jiao woke up, she sat on the edge of the bed in a daze for a long time.
This time, she wasn't stunned by her own dream, but by her husband's good fortune.
What kind of unlucky young people are these?
Is it really that unlucky?
And this time, it's actually that stunningly beautiful face that's been ruined! This won't do, absolutely not!
...
When Gu Jiao and Xiao Liulang finished breakfast, it was still dark and the old lady was still fast asleep in her room. Gu Jiao gently saw Xiao Liulang out the door.
"It's going to snow today, wear more clothes." Gu Jiao handed him an outer robe.
Looking at the starry night sky, Xiao Liulang felt it didn't look like it would snow, but he still accepted the outer robe she offered: "Thank you."
Gu Jiao saw him off at the village entrance as usual.
Xiao Liulang got on the oxcart, and Gu Jiao waited with him until Gu Xiaoshun came over in a daze, carrying his book bag, before she turned and left.
Gu Jiao knew that Xiao Liulang would go to the study this afternoon, and she also knew that he would be framed, but she did not remind him not to go.
She remembered the details of Xiao Liulang's case very clearly, so she knew where the thief had taken the stolen goods.
...
"I've put the food back in the pot. Eat it yourself if you're hungry. Also, take your medicine. Don't miss a single meal. I'll know if you throw it away," Gu Jiao said to the old lady in the main room.
Since the old lady doesn't actually have dementia, there's no need to stay by her side. Anyway, she's no longer contagious, so there's no worry about her harming anyone. As for the possibility of others harming her? That's impossible.
The old lady snorted and curled her lip.
Gu Jiao went out carrying a basket. As she passed by the Gu family mansion, she happened to run into Gu Yue'e, who was coming out to empty her wash water.
"Good morning, Sister Yue'e," she greeted.
Influenced by her mother and the second wife, Gu Yue'e was not close to Gu Jiao. When Gu Jiao took the initiative to greet her, she didn't say anything and went into the house in silence.
"Who's speaking?" asked Zhou from inside.
"Jiao Niang," Gu Yue'e whispered.
Zhou pushed the door open with a whoosh.
Gu Jiao greeted her as well: "Good morning, Auntie."
"Uh... good morning, good morning." Zhou, who considered herself the mother of a scholar, was more polite than Liu. She glanced at Gu Jiao, who was carrying a basket on her back, and said with an awkward smile, "Jiao, where are you going so early?"
Gu Jiao said with a smile, "I'll go up the mountain to pick some mountain produce and then take it to town to sell."
Zhou's eyes darted around, and she chuckled, "Do you sell mountain produce for money? I've heard it's poisonous..."
"I know which ones are non-poisonous; my husband taught me." If she said she knew them herself, no one would believe her.
A few days ago, the three Zhous came to her door and made a scene. At that time, she saw the things in Gu Jiao's basket: melon seeds, candied fruit, brown sugar, and peanuts. How much money must that have cost? This girl must have made a lot of money selling mountain products.
Zhou's eyes flashed, and she said with a smile, "Jiao Niang, can you bring your aunt along? You can't pick that many by yourself, can you? Your aunt will help you pick them!"
“Okay,” Gu Jiao readily agreed.
Zhou chuckled to herself. A fool is a fool, so easy to fool. Once she knows all the mountain produce, there won't be any left for her to pick.
Zhou wouldn't have invited Liu to such a good thing, but Liu overheard it and came out carrying a basket: "Second Aunt, you should come too!"
"Okay." Gu Jiao smiled.
Gu Jiao went to the mountain to pick mushrooms with her two aunts.
She could have easily picked some wood ear mushrooms and poisonous mushrooms to trick them into selling, but that would have harmed innocent people, and she wouldn't stoop to that level.
She led the two of them to pick some common winter mushrooms, filling all their baskets and hampers before leaving satisfied.
"Can this really be sold for money?" Zhou asked with some skepticism.
“Auntie, just come with me, they sell very well,” Gu Jiao said.
Zhou wanted to go alone so that she could decide how much she sold and wouldn't have to hand it all over to her family. Unfortunately, Liu had the same idea, so the two of them ended up going with Gu Jiao.
"Jiao Niang, this isn't the way to the market," Liu asked Gu Jiao curiously halfway there.
Gu Jiao said, "The market is almost closing at this hour. Let's go to the market in the east of town; the prices there are higher."
Upon hearing that they could sell it for more money, the two of them stopped talking.
As they passed an alley, Gu Jiao suddenly said, "I need to go to the outhouse. Aunt and Second Aunt, wait for me for a moment."
“Go ahead, go ahead,” Zhou said.
Liu muttered, pursing her lips, "Lazy people poop and pee a lot!"
Gu Jiao walked through the alley to the back door of Huichuntang, opened the door and went inside.
Fifteen minutes later, Gu Jiao returned.
"Why is it taking so long?" Liu complained.
Gu Jiao smiled faintly: "I ate something that upset my stomach."
Zhou hurriedly said, "Alright, Jiaoniang, where's the market? Let's hurry and sell our mountain produce before it goes bad!"
"Mm." Gu Jiao nodded with a smile.
Gu Jiao led the two forward.
Suddenly, a figure darted out from the side alley. Gu Jiao didn't dodge or avoid it, and bumped right into the person.
The man was knocked to the ground.
Gu Jiao swiftly pulled out a sickle: "You dare to bump into me?"
The man was bewildered. "Girl, who hit whom?"
Ignoring everything else, Gu Jiao brandished her sickle and slashed at the man. The two quickly became entangled in combat. Gu Jiao knocked the man's bundle to the ground, but before he could retrieve it, Gu Jiao chased him several hundred meters away with her sickle.
Zhou and Liu, itching to open the bundle that had fallen to the ground, were immediately overcome with greed upon seeing the gleaming silver inside.
They didn't steal or rob the silver; they found it on the street.
If you find it, it belongs to them!
The two tacitly agreed to pick up the items and leave, not leaving a single one for the little fool!
The two of them scrambled for the item, and in their frantic struggle to see who could grab more, they even got into a real fight!
After finishing his meal, Xiao Liulang took the copied books to Yipin Pavilion at the academy.
There are many bookstores in Qingquan Town, but this is the largest one, so even at noon, business is still very good.
Xiao Liulang's copied books sold the best; everyone in the study recognized him.
A servant boy greeted him politely: "The manager is not here. Could you please wait a moment in the accounting office on the second floor?"
Just as Xiao Liulang was about to enter, a waiter suddenly called out to him from behind: "Are you Young Master Xiao?"
Xiao Liulang turned around.
"Does Young Master Xiao still remember me?" the waiter asked with a smile.
"I remember." Xiao Liulang nodded. "You're from Huichuntang. Is there anything I can help you with?"
The shop assistant said awkwardly, "It's like this, the last time I gave you a few doses of the wrong medicine. Manager Wang asked me to come and find Young Master Xiao. I wonder if Young Master Xiao is free right now? Could you come with me to Huichuntang to get the medicine, and while we're at it... let the doctor take a look at you?"
Generally, if the wrong medicine is prescribed, it can simply be delivered directly. However, Huichuntang offered to provide Xiao Liulang with a free medical consultation, which sounded like an expression of apology.
No problem.
Xiao Liulang and the shop assistant from Huichuntang left, and Gu Dashun, behind the bookshelf, withdrew his disgusted gaze.
Xiao Liulang went to Huichuntang to get medicine and have his leg examined. The shop assistant personally escorted him back to the academy. However, as soon as the two got off the carriage, they heard the students outside the academy whispering among themselves.
"Have you heard? There was a theft in the study, and the thief is a freshman in our academy's top class."
"A freshman in Class A? What's his/her name?"
"Gu Dashun!"
