Chapter 511 Rescue Successful (First Update)
After realizing what was happening, Shen Xuan said to Gu Jiao, "No, Doctor Gu, I'll stay. You all go first!"
Gu Jiao said, "You're not fast enough, you won't be able to catch up in a while, and you won't be able to understand the coded messages left along the way."
Shen Xuan was speechless.
"Let's go," Gu Jiao said.
Shen Xuan reluctantly agreed, then, as if remembering something, asked Gu Jiao, "Where are we going?"
Gu Jiao said, "We'll find a safe place to settle you down."
“Where are our families?” a man in his early thirties asked.
Gu Jiao looked at him and said, "The Gu family army's experts have already infiltrated the city and will be brought out before the battle begins."
"Can we go home after the war is over?" another patient asked. He was the oldest among them, forty years old, and used to be a wealthy man surnamed Zhao.
Gu Jiao looked at him. When she put the mask on him earlier, she noticed that his body temperature was higher than the others and his symptoms were more severe.
Gu Jiao didn't rush to answer his question, but instead asked, "Are you the one who didn't get better after taking the medicine?"
"Huh?" Master Zhao was taken aback, clearly not understanding why the topic had suddenly changed so quickly.
Gu Jiao didn't have time to carefully find out why his condition hadn't improved, so she just said to him, "You can only go home after you've fully recovered."
Master Zhao asked, "Completely recovered? How long will that take?"
Gu Jiao crossed her arms and said, "Look how quickly you've recovered."
Master Zhao's expression changed instantly.
There are thirteen patients locked up here. After removing the assassins, there are twelve left. Of these twelve, only Zhao Yuan is not getting better. The rest of them are all a little better than before.
Although they were eager to go back to see their families, they knew in their hearts that they had contracted the plague and that going back before they were fully recovered would inevitably bring misfortune to their families.
More importantly, they saw a glimmer of hope for recovery.
Master Zhao didn't think so.
He suddenly took a few steps back, walked onto the wooden bridge, and looked at Gu Jiao warily: "Your medicine is completely ineffective! If we don't get better, are we going to be locked up by you for the rest of our lives?"
Gu Jiao tapped her fingertips lightly on his arms as he crossed them, and said calmly, "I'll give you a different medicine after the battle at Lingguan City is over."
"What if other medicines don't work either! What if you can't cure me! What if you're just trying to trick us into leaving!"
Shen Xuan frowned: "What nonsense are you talking about! Doctor Gu is a person sent by the imperial court! She came with the young master of the Gu family army that day! Didn't you see it with your own eyes!"
"We've never even seen the real Gu family army! Who knows if what she's saying is true! Maybe she's a fake young master! She's just trying to lure us out to kill us!"
He spoke passionately, looking at the patients, “The plague is incurable! Her medicine can only relieve the symptoms, but in the end we will still die! She knows! She is a doctor! She knows everything! She just wants to lure us out! She wants us to infect the Prince Yi’s soldiers! She wants to throw us into the Prince Yi’s camp!”
Upon hearing this, the patients immediately became extremely anxious!
Shen Xuan frowned even more. He looked at him anxiously, then at his companions who were clearly also on guard, and said with a disappointed expression, "Doctor Gu is not that kind of person!"
Master Zhao sneered, "How do you know she's not that kind of person! Are you very familiar with her? Or... have you been bribed by her!"
Shen Xuan angrily retorted, "You surnamed Zhao! Don't make false accusations!"
“You can stay,” Gu Jiao said calmly, “but leave the body behind.”
The patients were visibly shocked!
Master Zhao pointed at Gu Jiao: "Well, well! Your true colors are showing! You've come here to kill!"
Gu Jiao ignored him, took the armor from the guard, and walked calmly onto the wooden bridge, asking the patients behind her, "Anyone want to stay?"
The six guards simultaneously drew their chilling swords from their waists.
The patients all shrank back in fright.
That's human nature; if you can live one more moment, no one will choose to die immediately.
As Zhao Yuanwai watched Gu Jiao approach him carrying a weapon longer than himself, a sudden unease gripped him. The instant Gu Jiao drew near, he darted away!
He hid behind Xiao Shitou Chenxuan.
Gu Jiao had no intention of laying a finger on Master Zhao, but he was so frightened by his own actions.
"Take care, Doctor Gu." One of the guards bowed to Gu Jiao's retreating figure.
Gu Jiao didn't turn around, but casually raised her right hand.
The group left under the escort of the bodyguards.
Because of the heavy snowfall, the footprints on the ground were quickly covered by the snowflakes.
Gu Jiao sat in the assassin's cabin, closing her eyes to rest.
As dawn broke, two soldiers, remnants of the previous dynasty, arrived with food and medicine.
Gu Jiao knocked on the door three times from the inside.
The two soldiers left with peace of mind.
After they left, Gu Jiao took the food inside and put it away, and disposed of the medicine.
At noon, the two soldiers came again.
They first took away several food boxes, and then put down new food boxes.
As usual, Gu Jiao disposed of the food and medicine discreetly.
Gu Jiao could have left at this point, since the soldiers wouldn't come back until dinner time unless something unexpected happened. By then, the Gu family army would have already launched an attack on Lingguan City, so it wouldn't matter whether the things in the village were discovered or not.
However, just to be on the safe side, Gu Jiao waited until dinner time.
When the soldiers from the previous dynasty came to deliver dinner, she killed them.
Gu Jiao took off her isolation suit, put on her armor, carried a small basket and a red-tasseled spear on her back, and followed the coded signals along the way.
Gu Jiao found them in the woods where the Gu family army had been stationed earlier.
They were placed in a tent and guarded by six secret guards.
When they arrived, the Gu family army had not yet left. They saw the well-organized army, as well as the banners of the Zhao Kingdom and the military flags of the Gu family army. Their hearts, which had been pounding all the way, finally settled down completely.
As long as they are the real Gu family army, that's good.
The Gu family army will not allow the people to be implicated in injustice.
The wealthy man surnamed Zhao was sitting on a mat in the tent, coughing violently, and blood was seeping out of his mask.
Gu Jiao left the red-tasseled spear outside, lifted the curtain, and went over.
"Dr. Gu!" Xiao Shitou Chenxuan stood up and looked at her with surprise. She had taken off her isolation suit and was wearing dark armor, which was different from the silver armor of the Gu family army, but she had a strangely powerful aura.
Shen Xuan was already excited just watching.
Gu Jiao nodded to him, then knelt down on one knee in front of Master Zhao to examine his condition. She first took his pulse, then took out a stethoscope to listen to the sounds in his lungs.
After listening, Gu Jiao frowned and looked at him: "Did you really take your medicine?"
Master Zhao's eyes flashed!
Shen Xuan quickly noticed his panic and asked incredulously, "You didn't take your medicine?"
Master Zhao coughed up blood so hard he could barely speak.
Gu Jiao used her gloved hands to remove his blood-stained mask, placed it in a basket lined with brown paper, and said coldly, "Why aren't you taking your medicine?"
Master Zhao, still running a high fever, said dizzily, "Who...who knows if what you gave me...was...poison?"
Shen Xuan said with exasperation, "You're far too paranoid! If it's poison, how can we all possibly recover!"
Whether things were getting better or not, Master Zhao only truly understood after taking a trip. Everyone else was locked up in the village. Shen Xuan said he was much better and not feeling so bad anymore, and the others echoed that sentiment.
But Master Zhao felt that it might be psychological, and that he might not actually be recovering.
However, just now, he collapsed on the road several times, while the other patients had almost the same physical strength as normal people. Even Xiao Guo, whose condition was not so obvious, was able to keep up with the group.
He realized he had misunderstood Gu Jiao.
That was a real cure for the plague.
Unfortunately, he realized it too late.
He...he...he's going to die...
He was almost out of breath...
Master Zhao choked on his breath, his face quickly turned cyanotic and purple, his body stiffened, and soon he began to have convulsions.
Gu Jiao quickly broke off a piece of wood from the woodpile and stuffed it into his mouth. She then quickly pressed his acupoints such as Renzhong, Hegu, and Neiguan until his body stopped convulsing.
Gu Jiao took his temperature; it was a high fever of 40 degrees Celsius.
In this situation, physical cooling methods are unlikely to be effective. He is unconscious to the point that he cannot be given medication.
"Dr. Gu, is there any hope for him?" Little Stone asked in a low voice.
"I don't know," Gu Jiao said, frowning.
That's the truth. The mortality rate of plague is already extremely high, and he's not cooperating with treatment. Now he really has to leave it to fate.
Gu Jiao gave him an injection, first to reduce the fever, and then changed the IV drip with streptomycin.
Just as Gu Jiao was about to find a stand to hang up the IV drip, Zhao Yuanwai suddenly woke up. He felt his arm was ice-cold, and when he looked closely, he was so shocked that he immediately reached out to pull it off: "What are you doing to me!"
Gu Jiao is receiving an IV drip.
Little Stone lunged forward and pinned him down, but it was too late.
A spurt of blood gushed out, splattering all over Gu Jiao's face and dripping from her goggles onto her mask.
She smelled a strong stench of blood.
