Chapter 64 The Marquis
Gu Yan couldn't stay in the small restaurant for long because the guards from the Marquis's residence came to his door.
Gu Yan didn't let them disturb Gu Jiao and quietly said goodbye to her.
Watching his slowly receding figure, and thinking of his humble and polite manner, Gu Jiao's heart couldn't take it anymore. He was handsome, from a good family, and so gentle and polite. Why was God tormenting such a perfect little darling?
The usually polite and well-mannered little darling vanished the moment she sat in the Marquis's carriage, her anger vanished, and her eyes turned icy cold, making her a completely different person from when she was with Gu Jiao.
The man in black who had been knocked unconscious by Gu Jiao's blow had returned to Gu Yan's side with his companion. The two tried their best to keep a low profile and didn't dare to make a sound.
They've witnessed firsthand how shameless the young master is. Is he really that good at pretending? If you're so capable, why don't you try acting like a little darling in front of the Marquis and his wife?
Who is that annoying, irritable person who's always so grumpy?
Strictly speaking, they were both negligent today, yet the young master didn't even utter a word of reprimand, clearly indicating he was in a very good mood. In that case, should I tell him the news?
"Aren't you leaving yet? Is something the matter?" Gu Yan asked with disdain.
The two exchanged a glance, and finally the man in black who had been hit on the head with a stick spoke up: "The Marquis is on his way."
Gu Yan's aura suddenly turned cold.
After a long pause, he held out his hand: "Draw."
The two men, with perfect understanding, each presented the Marquis with an antique painting from his collection.
Gu Yan grabbed it and tore it up in a flash!
Meanwhile, Gu Jiao also planned to leave.
The food was delicious today. Gu Jiao bought a braised pork knuckle with rock sugar and a bowl of braised lion's head meatballs, and paid a deposit of fifty coins. She asked the shopkeeper for two jars to pack the food and planned to take it home to her family.
Just as she was leaving the small restaurant with the jar in her arms, a fine horse galloped past, its rider brandishing a whip and rudely driving away the crowd in the street.
One of the elderly women being driven away stumbled forward and bumped into Gu Jiao's jar while trying to avoid his whip.
Gu Jiao's jar fell to the ground and shattered with a bang, spilling soup and pork knuckle meatballs all over the ground. It was quickly trampled on by another woman in a panic.
"Ouch--"
The older woman slipped and almost fell, but Gu Jiao reached out and pulled her aside.
After realizing what had happened, the older woman quickly apologized to Gu Jiao, "I'm so sorry, young lady, I... I didn't mean to..."
There's a cause for every wrong, and a debtor for every debt. This isn't her fault; the blame should fall on the man who rode his horse recklessly in the street.
The man ignored the chaos she had caused, not even glancing at Gu Jiao. Gu Jiao narrowed her eyes, and as he swung his whip again and brushed past her, she grabbed it.
Then, without giving the other party any room for negotiation, they unceremoniously dragged the person off the carriage.
The man fell heavily to the ground, and the horse slipped from his grasp and galloped away until it disappeared!
He was a trained fighter, so the fall wasn't serious; he only suffered minor injuries. However, he was furious. Who dared to pull him off his horse right there in the street!
He suddenly rushed towards Gu Jiao, who grabbed the whip and lashed out, sending him flying.
He crashed into the carriage behind him.
The carriage lurched violently, and the girl inside lost her balance, her head hitting the carriage wall. She cried out in pain, "Ah—!"
Just then, the carriage was forced to stop. The man who had been whipped away by Gu Jiao scrambled to his feet in fear, knelt beside the carriage, and bowed, saying, "Your subordinate is guilty! Please punish me, Your Highness!"
Gu Jiao frowned slightly, a strange look on her face. "Lord Marquis?"
Inside the carriage, Lord Gu helped his daughter, who had bumped her head, and asked worriedly, "Jinyu, how are you? Are you alright?"
Gu Jinyu's forehead turned red. In fact, this was not even a minor injury. Gu Jiao's hand, any new or old wound, was much more serious than this. But what could Gu Jinyu do when she was spoiled and pampered?
She never suffered any hardship or pain.
Gu Jinyu covered her forehead, looking at Lord Gu with a wronged expression, tears welling up in her eyes: "It hurts."
"Let your father take a look." Lord Gu removed Gu Jinyu's hand, and when he saw her red forehead, anger surged into his heart.
He flung open the curtain and coldly stared at the kneeling guard: "What happened?!"
The guard pointed at Gu Jiao and said, "I was clearing the way when she snatched my whip, pulled me off my horse, and whipped me. That's why I bumped into the Marquis's carriage."
The moment the people around heard the name of the Marquis, their legs went weak and they all knelt down. Only Gu Jiao stood there stubbornly and proudly.
Lord Gu's gaze fell coldly on Gu Jiao's face.
It was a face that one didn't want to look at a second time; her brows and eyes were cold and aloof, and the blood-red birthmark made her skin appear unusually fair, exuding a hint of untamed charm amidst her allure.
Her eyes were cold and sharp, and she did not flinch when she met Lord Gu's gaze.
She was dressed like a villager from the countryside, and was about the same age as Jin Yu, yet she possessed such terrifying eyes.
Lord Gu said coldly, "You've got some nerve!"
Whether it's beating his guards in the street or refusing to kneel before him, they are both extremely audacious!
Gu Jiao did not flinch at his reprimand; she stepped forward, whip in hand.
The guard stood up abruptly, drew his sword, and blocked her path.
Gu Jiao didn't even lift her eyelids, and with a whip, she knocked his sword back into its sheath!
Everyone was stunned!
Lord Gu was also taken aback.
Gu Jiao approached the carriage, and the others swarmed around her, but she remained unfazed.
She reached out her hand to Lord Gu.
Lord Gu frowned: "What are you doing?"
Gu Jiao said calmly, "The jar costs fifty coins, the rock sugar braised pork knuckle costs sixty coins, the braised lion's head meatballs cost forty coins, and I need to have the shop make another one, plus a one hundred coin for lost work time, making a total of two hundred and fifty coins."
Lord Gu: "..."
Lord Gu glanced at the mess on the ground, then looked at the guard who had caused the trouble. The guard lowered his head guiltily, and Lord Gu understood everything.
Lord Gu coldly snorted, "My people may have made mistakes, but little girl, aren't you being far too arrogant? Aren't you afraid I'll punish you with death?"
Gu Jiao glanced at him, seemingly considering his words seriously, and after a moment said, "Two hundred and forty-nine coins."
"..." Lord Gu was completely bewildered. What was all this about?
Gu Jinyu recognized Gu Jiao. She tugged at Lord Gu's sleeve and shook her head slightly at him.
Lord Gu frowned and said to Gu Jiao, "If my daughter pleads for you, I will spare you!"
After saying that, he tossed a silver ingot to Gu Jiao, lowered the carriage curtain, and let the driver drive the carriage away.
Gu Jiao said that she only wanted 249 coins, so he gave her too much.
Gu Jiao broke off a small piece of the silver ingot and casually tossed the rest back into his carriage.
The silver ingot struck Lord Gu squarely on the head, immediately creating a large bump!
Lord Gu: "!!!"
Lord Gu: Didn't your father teach you not to litter?
Jiaojiao: My father is dead.
Lord Gu: Achoo!!!
