Shen's mother's real name was Wang Shuqin. She was from Wangji Village a few kilometers away. She was married to Shen's father by a matchmaker.
Shen's mother's best friend was Wang Qiaoju, who married a farmer from the same village.
Because Wang Qiaoju and his wife were one or two years older than Shen's mother and father, Shen Chen and Shen's eldest brother called them Uncle Wang and Aunt Wang.
Chen Zhen and his companion came after noon, and at this moment, Shen's mother and others were drinking tea in the living room.
Seeing Chen Zhen coming back, Chen's mother and the others came out to greet him.
Seeing Chen Zhen helping He Jinshu get off the carriage, Aunt Wang smiled and said to Chen's mother, "Brother Zhen is really considerate."
"That's not the case. He is more considerate to his girlfriend than to me, his mother." Mother Shen said sourly.
Upon hearing this, Aunt Wang teased, "Just be content. Brother Zhen has found such an outstanding scholar. Shouldn't you be secretly happy when you go to bed?"
After hearing this, Shen's mother's face, which was originally a little resentful, instantly showed a smile.
After He Jinshu came down, the two of them greeted Shen's mother and the others first, and then Shen Chen took out a jar from the carriage and said to Shen's mother: "Mom, I made some more fermented black bean sauce to bring to you."
Mother Shen was delighted when she heard this: “This is really great. We have eaten all the food we made before, and we are still talking about it at home.”
After hearing this, Chen Zhen said, "Ashu, go into the house with your mother first. I'll go put the jar away."
He Jinshu nodded slightly to indicate that he understood, and then followed everyone into the living room.
As they walked, Aunt Wang asked curiously, "Is Brother Zhen researching new food again?"
"Yes, I made it some time ago. I saw he brought quite a lot this time. I'll pack some for you when we get back."
"That's great. Every time I eat something cooked by Brother Zhen, it tastes especially good."
Everyone sat down in the living room. As soon as He Jinshu sat down, he felt a pair of eyes staring at him from the opposite side, so he looked back calmly.
The man was sitting on a chair. His height could not be seen for the time being, but he was a little fat. He was wearing an indigo embroidered robe. His skin was wheat-colored, with a little baby fat on his cheeks, and his eyebrows and eyes looked very gentle.
If John Hoffman gives people a cold and distant feeling, then the person opposite him gives people a gentle and close feeling.
After Shen's mother sat down, she introduced him to He Jinshu: "Jinshu, this is Aunt Wang's youngest son, Wang Zhengkun. He is a few months older than Ting'er. He has been playing with Ting'er and the others since he was a child. You can communicate more when you have time in the future."
When Shen Zhen got married, Wang Zhengkun was absent due to some matters, so he had never met He Jinshu, so Shen's mother introduced them to each other.
He Jinshu nodded to Wang Zhengkun upon hearing this, and then said, "Hello."
Wang Zhengkun glanced at He Jinshu and said, "Are you a scholar?"
He Jinshu felt that there was some hostility in the man's eyes, but he didn't know where it came from, so he said calmly, "Yes."
After hearing this, Wang Zhengkun nodded and said nothing more, but he thought in his heart: I didn’t expect that Brother Zhen would like such a frail scholar. He looks so thin, will he be able to take good care of him in the future?
At this time, Shen Zhen came in and said to Shen's mother after entering the door: "Mom, do we have duck eggs at home? Please give me some when I leave."
"Yes, I know you need them, so I've saved quite a bit at home. Just take them all away later."
Upon hearing this, Chen Chen nodded and said, "Okay, I plan to make more this time. I'll go to the village to collect some duck eggs later."
"Then let your sister-in-law go with you later." Mother Shen said.
"Aunt Qin, the weather is so hot, don't let my sister-in-law go. I'll go with Brother Zhen." Wang Zhengkun continued.
Upon hearing this, Mother Shen said, “That’s fine, then you can go with him later and bring a bigger bamboo basket.”
"Okay." Wang Zhengkun said.
After the two of them finished talking, Chen Chen turned to He Jinshu and said, "Ah Shu, you stay here and chat with Mom and the others for a while. Brother Kun and I will go collect the eggs."
After hearing this, He Jinshu stood up and said, "It's okay. I'll go with you to collect the duck eggs. I'll talk to Mom and the others when I come back."
"It's quite hot outside, why don't you rest inside?"
"It's okay, I'm not afraid of the heat." He Jinshu said lightly.
Seeing He Jinshu's insistence, Chen Zhen said, "Okay, then let's go together."
Then the three of them said hello to Shen's mother and walked out of the Shen family's door.
Aunt Wang watched the three people leave and said with a hint of emotion, "Although it's a pity that Brother Zhen didn't become the husband of my daughter Zhengkun, but Brother Zhen's vision is really good."
Upon hearing this, Mother Shen smiled and said, "Don't tell him that you want him to be your husband in front of him and Jinshu. He might get angry with you. He is protecting Jinshu very tightly now."
Aunt Wang glanced at Mother Shen with a reproachful look, and then said, "How could I go to Brother Zhen and talk nonsense? I just sighed with you."
Not long after Chen Zhen and the other two walked out of the courtyard, Wang Zhengkun said to Chen Zhen, "I'm getting married at the end of August this year. Remember to come to my house for a feast. We came here today specifically to tell you about this."
"Okay, I will definitely go when the time comes." Chen Chen nodded and said.
"What are you going to do with this duck egg you bought today?"
“Make preserved eggs.”
“Is it also a kind of food?”
"yes."
"Then can you make more? I'll buy some from you for our wedding, how about that?"
