Another draft

It's another draft year.

The imperial concubine selection was not delayed in the 30th year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign due to the war. The Crown Prince needed to choose a Crown Princess, and so many members of the imperial clan needed to choose wives; it could not be delayed.

The main reason was actually to select a Crown Princess.

When Emperor Kangxi returned to the capital, the imperial selection process was nearing its end. Due to the war, the selection was conducted very quickly this year, and the emperor reviewed the candidates upon his return.

Emperor Kangxi was in a bad mood after his defeat in battle. After selecting the crown princess, he handed over the rest to his four consorts and hastily concluded the selection process. This was the only selection of consorts that did not have any names recorded.

Kangxi always felt very irritable during talent shows.

Why? Because Emperor Kangxi had to decide on the marriages of his relatives. Being a matchmaker was too tiring. He had to consider the intricate relationships between relatives, the marriage alliances between powerful families, the marriages between officials from the previous dynasty, and the marriage alliances between various Mongol tribes and members of the imperial family.

Being an emperor is so troublesome.

Unfortunately, this was originally the Empress's job, but since you don't have an Empress,

Moreover, even with an empress, you still don't trust her? This bestowed marriage wields immense power. By starting with marriages between powerful families and court officials, it can even disrupt the court and break the balance of power of the previous dynasty.

Given such immense power, how could Emperor Kangxi possibly relinquish it?

Therefore, upon returning to court, Kangxi immediately dealt with the selection of concubines, first issuing an edict to bestow marriage upon the crown prince, and then bestowing marriage upon members of the imperial clan.

As expected, the Crown Prince's wife was from the Guarjia clan, the daughter of Commander-in-Chief Shi Wenbing, and her father was a count.

Aisin-Gioro Haishan, the third son of Prince Gong Changning, was born on the 23rd day of the fourth month of the Bingchen year of the Kangxi reign (1666). He was already 16 years old and was betrothed to a woman from the Guarjia clan, the daughter of Huerdun, a military officer.

Once all the imperial edicts bestowing this marriage were issued,

Emperor Kangxi fell ill.

Yes, he's been going through a lot of hardship lately.

Because of the defeat, he then had to deal with the draft matters one after another.

Prince Yu, Fuquan, was also having a difficult time outside the palace. The emperor was very displeased with his failure to consult the emperor before going to war, and Fuquan suffered a series of defeats.

Therefore, after returning to the capital in triumph, Kangxi severely reprimanded him, and Fuquan fell ill after a few days of suffering.

Now both brothers have fallen ill.

The Empress Dowager was extremely anxious, so the concubines began to take turns attending to her.

Consort Hui had originally planned to select two good servants for her son. The servants in her son's harem were all old, and Consort Li, who was born in the same year as the First Consort, had already been deposed. The others had all entered the prince's household five or six years ago.

Now, apart from his wife, none of the eldest princes have won Yinzhi's favor.

Although the First Princess Consort was good, she also wanted two more people to serve her son.

Emperor Kangxi gave Consort Hui two surprises. The first was that no new women would be selected for the harem. This was the first time in Kangxi's reign that no new women were selected for the imperial harem.

The second thing is that Emperor Kangxi actually fell ill. When she was preparing to talk to Emperor Kangxi about this matter, she had already chosen a candidate.

Now there was no chance to speak out, and she didn't have time to think about anything else. After all, Kangxi was her biggest backer. If Kangxi were gone and the crown prince succeeded to the throne, she didn't even dare to think about that situation.

What will happen then? Even if Yinzhi, as the eldest son of a concubine, is not purged at the beginning, he will still suffer a terrible death in the future.

Therefore, Consort Hui no longer had time to pay attention to her son's affairs in the inner quarters. She devoted herself to caring for the ailing Emperor Kangxi and prayed every day in the small Buddhist hall of Chuxiu Palace, hoping that he would recover quickly.

There was another reason: Consort Hui had feelings for Emperor Kangxi. She had been favored by him and had shared a sweet period with him.
