Choosing a name 1

“Your Majesty, judging from Father’s words, it seems he won’t bestow a name upon the Second Prince. Let’s choose a name ourselves,” He Zhuo said, forking a piece of watermelon for Yin Zhi.

It is now the summer of the 33rd year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign.

In June, a slice of ice-cold watermelon is the perfect treat!

While the He Zhuo couple were enjoying the cool air, Yin Zhi leaned back in his recliner, stealing a moment of leisure from his busy life.

Yinzhi took the watermelon from his wife, took a bite, and found it juicy and plump—truly a delightful experience.

"Hmm, let's name them ourselves. The mistress is five months along, let's name them all at the same time. Let me think about it carefully."

He Zhuo was fanning himself with a newly acquired round fan embroidered with pomegranates, for pomegranates are full of seeds.

The Imperial Household Department truly lives up to its reputation as a place for outstanding individuals; it has perfectly captured the heart of the First Princess Consort.

“Alright, no rush. I was just thinking that we should name the girls too. Even though they weren’t born from my womb, they will still call me ‘mother’.”

Yinzhi thought to himself, "The princesses in this palace are still called by their birth order. They won't have names until they get married."

Thinking about it that way, I just said it out loud.

He Zhuo glared at him and said, "Your Highness is the Emperor, how could you understand the thoughts of our youngest daughter? Many families only give their daughters names when they get married. Most commoners' daughters don't have names, they're just called 'Big Sister, Second Sister, Third Sister'."

Yinzhi had an expression that said, "What's wrong with this?"

“You men have no idea what names mean to us. Girls, having a friend with a name is a huge deal, that’s it,” He Zhuo said, giving a thumbs up.

That's awesome!

Yinzhi smiled and said, "That's an ordinary family."

He Zhuo rolled his eyes: "In this respect, it's all the same."

Yinzhi thought that even his wife's eye-rolling was incredibly charming.

In the past two years, the princess has matured, gradually shedding her naivety and becoming gentle and charming, which makes him stare at her.

This perfectly echoes Cao Zhi's poem: "In the south there is a beautiful woman, whose beauty is like that of peaches and plums."

Seeing his silly look, He Zhuo covered his mouth with his fan and laughed, then forked a piece of watermelon and stuffed it into Yin Zhi's mouth.

Yinzhi muttered, "Delicious."

His eyes were still fixed on He Zhuo.

I'm not sure if they're talking about a person or a watermelon...

He Zhuo: "What are the names of the Second Princess, the Third Princess, and the Fourth Princess, Your Highness?"

Yinzhi pulled his wife's smooth, delicate hand and stroked it: "Let's listen to the wife. Let's think together. I'll think of names for the princes, and you can think of names for the daughters."

He Zhuo stood up, paced around a few times, and then sat back down: "I think it would be better to use the character '芳' (fang). '芳' also refers to virtuous conduct or reputation, implying lasting fame and lasting renown. What do you think, Your Highness?"

Yinzhi thought about it carefully and agreed that it was indeed a good choice. He nodded and said, "Let's use this one. Has the Princess Consort thought of another word?"

"The second princess is quiet and well-behaved, and the character '婉' (wan) is most suitable for her."

Which "wan"?

He Zhuo pulled Yin Zhi's hand and wrote the words in Yin Zhi's palm. After he finished writing, Yin Zhi grabbed his hand and pulled him into his arms.

Yinzhi was tall with large hands, warm palms, and thin calluses on his hands.

He Zhuo didn't struggle, but sat down in her husband's lap and continued to ramble on: "The Third Princess and the Fourth Princess are twins, and I think they can be named 'Ning' and 'Yun'."

As usual, He Zhuo wrote the two characters on Yin Zhi's hand.

"The character '宁' means peace and stability; the clouds in the sky are all white and beautiful, and they can bring rain and dew to nourish the earth. What do you think, sir?"
