Kangxi's Second Campaign Against Galdan

Not long after the army returned, Princess Xitala gave birth. Contrary to her wishes, she didn't have a grandson to protect the emperor; instead, she had a daughter. Furthermore, the baby wasn't very healthy; Princess Xitala had been overthinking during her pregnancy, which harmed the fetus.

When Yinzhi heard that the princess was unhealthy, he felt a pang of unease. How come everyone else in the inner quarters had children and they were all healthy, but this one was unhealthy?

My seeds are definitely good; the problem lies with your field.

Yinzhi glanced at it, instructed that it be taken good care of, and then left.

Because the child was weak, the baby's third-day celebration and full-month celebration were not held.

Three days after the little princess was born, she was supposed to be taken to Zhilan Courtyard as was customary.

Princess Xitala caused a scene, which made the child catch a cold and fall ill. The imperial physician frankly said that the child could have recovered with proper care, but she fell ill after only three days. This old minister really has no confidence in her recovery.

Enraged, Yinzhi smashed all the cups and objects around him. "In someone else's household, a miscarriage occurred, and the dead child was born."

There's no such thing in Yinzhi's household. Miscarriages are never considered good. Now the imperial physician says the baby won't survive. Does that mean his child will die too?

After thinking it over, Yinzhi went to the palace. Soon after, Consort Hui gave permission for Princess Xitala to raise her own child.

How could Princess Xitala be happy? She could only pretend to be happy. Originally, the child could stand up and was well raised by her side, but now the imperial physicians all say it is very difficult. How can the child be raised well?

However, we cannot refuse to accept it, and we should accept it happily, for it is a blessing.

And after all, they are a piece of my own flesh and blood, so it always hurts to see them suffer.

This aroused jealousy and hostility among the princesses in the backyard. Everyone else can't raise children, but you can. Are you that special?

It's good that I had a daughter; I can see her at Zhilan Courtyard.

Princess Guan's fourth son lived in the front courtyard, and she could only see him on days for paying respects and on holidays.

In the 35th year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign, the emperor was very busy and rarely set foot in the backyard.

Unexpectedly, during the New Year, Yinzhi gave everyone in the inner court a big surprise. His servants brought over a group of women, and Yinzhi rewarded a few with them while keeping two for himself.

One of the girls was surnamed Qian, and her family were wealthy merchants from Shanxi.

With their family's backer gone, their family was like a child carrying a mountain of gold across the street—hardly to protect. This woman was introduced by the Nalan family, so Yinzhi accepted her, along with the 50,000 taels of silver and two large boxes of calligraphy and paintings that the girl brought.

Yinzhi intervened and saved their family's property, but much of it had already been sold off and could not be recovered.

This girl, Qian, was engaged. After her powerful backer fell from grace, her fiancé died. His family claimed that she was cursed and killed, and they wanted to arrest her and send her to be married off. Later, the Nalan family intervened and she sought refuge with Yinzhi, and the matter was dropped.

The other was a woman with bound feet, a delicate, almost Lin Daiyu-like figure, who would weep at the sight of flowers and grass. Yinzhi was somewhat averse to women with bound feet, but he couldn't give away all the women sent, so he kept her in the household. Unexpectedly, she died after only a year. Although others were harsh with her, they never neglected her allowances or rations. She couldn't bear it; what could be done?

But that's a story for another time.

Guan Gege was already pregnant before these two concubines entered the household, and it was revealed that she was pregnant after they entered.

Princess Guan's luck was so good that even He Zhuo had to admire it. Yin Zhi rarely entered her room these days, yet she still managed to get pregnant.

In June of the 36th year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign, Consort Guan struggled all night and gave birth to a little princess. She did not say that she wanted to raise the child herself, but the child was taken to Zhilan Courtyard to be raised. Yinzhi saw that she was well-behaved and visited the child several times.

After two major battles, Galdan's group collapsed. Emperor Kangxi ordered Galdan to surrender, but Galdan resisted stubbornly. A year later, in the thirty-sixth year of Kangxi's reign, Emperor Kangxi personally led troops across the Yellow River to lead an expedition. By this time, Galdan's original base of operations, Ili, had already been occupied by his nephew, Tsewang Arabtan; his close confidants, upon hearing of the Qing army's arrival, also surrendered one after another, willing to serve as guides for the Qing army. Galdan, having no way out, committed suicide by poison.

Thus, Kangxi eliminated Galdan.
