Upon hearing this, Cheng Dai immediately dismissed the idea, reasoning that such a student was unlikely to be able to concentrate on studying.
The assessment results were announced last night, and he received an email from Shi Qian this morning saying that he wanted to join his team.
He was still hesitant, but if the student had a history of cheating, it would be best not to.
Cheng Dai clicked the reject template and replied to Shi Qian saying that the team was full and asked him to contact other mentors as soon as possible.
Shi Qian only saw the news of passing the assessment this morning. After seeing it, he immediately sent an email. After careful consideration, he decided to apply for the position of vice dean.
His thinking was simple: the dean estimated that many people would be interested, so he wouldn't join the crowd. He also didn't really want to choose other mentors, as it might limit his options for projects.
The vice dean position is just right; it's not too popular, but it still has enough influence, making it the best choice.
However, less than half an hour after he sent the email, he received a rejection letter. When Shi Qian opened it, he found that the position had already been filled.
Is becoming a vice dean so popular now?
Shi Qian thought that maybe he sent it too late. He guessed that other students would send emails to their advisors that same night after receiving the emails. He had gone to bed too early last night and missed the message.
Shi Qian didn't know how to choose the remaining mentors either. Oh well, she decided to start with the dean and send them out one by one according to the mentor list.
If one person rejects him, he sends the letter to the next one; he can always find a mentor.
Office of the Dean of the Department of Mathematics, Kyoto University.
Yue Lang was still discussing the research topic with his students. He doesn't recruit many students each year, and his team only has a dozen or so people in total.
If we were to be more specific, there were only three direct students personally mentored by Yue Lang.
The people currently discussing research topics with him in the office are his two direct students. Yue Lang usually delegates any tasks to them.
"Xiao Ran, Yi Bai, are there any promising new students you've been considering in this year's assessment?"
Zhong Ran and Lu Yibai looked up, glanced at each other, and shook their heads.
"I'm not sure. Yi Bai and I just returned to the academy and haven't had a chance to see this year's assessment results yet."
Zhong Ran scratched his head somewhat embarrassedly.
Yue Lang received many emails from last night to this morning, mostly from new students who had passed the assessment.
He saw the exam results Zhao Ping handed him yesterday, and he was surprised to find that there was a perfect scorer this year.
Unfortunately, Cheng Dai's side made the selection first this year, so this student has probably already been taken by him.
A "ding" sounded, and a new email arrived.
Yue Lang opened it and saw that the name looked familiar. He picked up the report card on the table and checked it. Wasn't this the perfect scorer, Shi Qian?
It's been a whole night, and Cheng Dai hasn't contacted us yet?
He was initially regretting that such a promising talent hadn't joined his team, but unexpectedly, Cheng Dai made no move.
Normally, these students would be contacted as soon as their results were released, and they would be asked directly if they wanted to join their team, and they would usually agree.
Could it be that Cheng Dai approached the student, but the student rejected him?
In any case, it's a good thing that he hasn't joined Cheng Dai's side yet. Yue Lang immediately replied to the email, asking Shi Qian to come and report to him in the next couple of days.
Shi Qian thought she would have to wait a while and was about to get up to get some hot water when she received a reply instantly.
The dean agreed.
Is the dean's office really that short-staffed this year? Shi Qian thought they had already filled all the positions, and he was just trying his luck when he got in.
That's good, at least we don't have to send them one by one anymore.
Two days later, Shi Qian reported to the dean's office in the laboratory building.
"Hello, I'm here to report for duty."
Zhong Ran and Lu Yibai, who were inside, heard the noise at the door and looked over.
Is this the perfect score freshman the teacher accepted this year? He's so good-looking! The average appearance of the whole team has suddenly skyrocketed.
Not only are his grades amazing, but he's also incredibly good-looking.
"Is this Junior Brother Shi Qian? The teacher is still in a meeting, please come in and wait."
Lu Yibai let Shi Qian come in first, and Shi Qian nodded.
"Let me introduce myself first. My name is Lu Yibai. I am a junior majoring in mathematics and also a student in the dean's laboratory team."
“My name is Zhong Ran, just like his.”
"Hello, my name is Shi Qian, and I am a freshman in the Department of Mathematics."
Shi Qian replied politely, but Zhong Ran couldn't stay serious for more than two seconds before she leaned close to Shi Qian and exclaimed exaggeratedly, "You're the Shi Qian who got a perfect score in this year's assessment? You're so different from what I imagined!"
Zhong Ran and Lu Yibai were meeting Shi Qian for the first time. They happened to be away when Shi Qian was in military training and when school started, so they hadn't heard any discussions about Shi Qian at school.
"That's incredible! How did you manage to do that? The sheer number of questions is insane! When I took the exam back then, I didn't even have time to finish the last question!"
"You're amazing!"
Shi Qian didn't know what to reply, so she just said dryly, "It's alright."
Lu Yibai didn't ask anything, but poured Shi Qian a glass of water and told him to drink a couple of sips first.
Shi Qian could sense that the two people were easy to get along with, and he breathed a sigh of relief. Although he didn't particularly care about the personalities of the people around him, they would be a team after all, and it was always good if they were easy to get along with.
After chatting for a while, Yue Lang returned and immediately gave Shi Qian a big smile.
"This must be Shi Qian, welcome to my team."
"These two are your senior brothers. You can ask them any questions you may have in the future."
Yue Lang asked everyone to add Shi Qian on WeChat, and then added Shi Qian to a small group. Besides him, the group consisted of several of his students.
There were originally only three, but now with Shi Qian added, there are four.
When Lu Yibai saw Shi Qian join the group, he immediately sent a red envelope.
