For Mrs. Shi, the most important thing in high society is face. If people knew that she had such a useless son, they would be laughed at.
Let him go to school if he wants, and it doesn't matter how badly he does. As long as no one knows he's their son, they can secretly send him abroad after graduation. With some gilding and packaging, he'll be a highly educated intellectual who has returned from studying abroad.
Although Madam Shi's own circle is full of good-for-nothing young masters and children like Shi Qian who can't do anything right, Madam Shi was born into an artistic family and is usually very proud and arrogant.
She couldn't stand anyone saying there was something wrong with her genes, that she had given birth to such a useless child as Shi Qian.
She would rather pretend she didn't have the child than hear people say she had bad genes.
He knew that saying these words would make his youngest son uncomfortable.
But compared to everyone knowing that he has a good-for-nothing son, that little bit of discomfort is nothing.
When Shi Qian heard this, he didn't think there was anything wrong with it. He lacked social interaction since childhood and couldn't tell the difference between good and bad words.
They also couldn't understand the implied meanings or veiled sarcasm in other people's words.
I think my mother said that because she didn't want him to get special treatment at school.
Even when her mother occasionally said that he embarrassed her, Shi Qian didn't think much of it. She realized that she hadn't done anything well, and her mother's words made sense.
So without the slightest hesitation, he immediately agreed.
After saying this, she happily took the gift, said "Thank you, Mom," and then pulled Meng Qing upstairs.
When Meng heard what Madam Shi said to Shi Qian, he felt that these words were somewhat hurtful. His adoptive parents often scolded him, but he never felt anything about it. After all, he was not someone else's biological child, so it was normal for them not to love him.
But after spending so many days with Shi Qian, he always thought that this pampered young master had been pampered and spoiled since childhood.
But now it seems that this is not the case.
Shi Qian is able to live so naively, probably because she can't understand the unspoken meanings behind other people's words.
Looking at Shi Qian, who was holding her hand and looking happy, Meng Qing felt a pang of sadness in a corner of her heart.
What an idiot.
It seems I'll have to keep an eye on him myself from now on, so he doesn't get bullied at school.
Shi Qian pulled Meng Qing along to pack his things to go back to school. Actually, he didn't have much to pack; it was just some textbooks and such.
He was basically self-taught throughout high school, and his family had all kinds of textbooks.
The Shi family was convinced that Shi Qian's grades were poor, so they didn't really care about his studies. They did hire tutors, but it was all just going through the motions, and they weren't responsible for his academic performance, since Shi Qian basically didn't participate in any of the school's exams, so there was no way to verify his learning.
Shi Qian didn't care much before. He had always lived a muddled life, and when he was clear-headed, he could do things he liked.
But most of the time, he was in a state of being out of control, like a puppet, getting sick, causing trouble, getting scolded, and then dropping out of school and staying at home according to a set schedule.
Actually, he didn't not want to study; he deliberately got sick to avoid it. It's just that every time he got into studying, it was as if a program in his brain suddenly crashed, and then the pain program in his body would start, which he couldn't control.
He actually likes musical instruments, especially the violin. When he is sober, Shi Qian would hide in his room to practice secretly, thinking that he would play it for his mother when he was ready. But every time he was ready, his brain would start acting up, and his fingers would become sluggish, and he could not play at the level he had practiced.
Shi Qian was not unaware of his abnormal behavior before, but every time he was sober, he attributed it to his poor health.
He couldn't find any other reason besides this.
Fortunately, he felt great these past few days, and he hadn't felt that sense of being unable to control his actions for a long time.
Shi Qian was organizing his textbooks, categorizing the materials he found useful.
"Meng Qing, how are your grades?"
“I have a lot of tutoring books here, which my tutor suggested I buy. I think they are quite useful.”
“I heard from Dad that you have good grades. Dad said you can ask me questions you don’t understand.”
Meng Qing stood quietly beside Shi Qian, helping him tidy up.
He picked up the math test that Shi Qian had done, glanced at it briefly, and found that the accuracy rate was very high, with almost all of them correct.
Did you write these?
Meng Qing remembered that the Shi family said Shi Qian's grades were very poor, but judging from the completion rate and accuracy of this test paper, it didn't seem like he had bad grades.
"Yeah, I just wrote it down casually, I haven't checked the answers yet."
Shi Qian glanced at the test paper Meng Qing was holding; it was math, the subject he considered his best.
Are your grades really bad?
Although Meng Qing didn't want to bring up Shi Qian's sad story, she still had many questions and asked anyway.
"Probably, everyone says my grades are terrible."
"I can't really explain it. Sometimes I find the questions very difficult and I just can't solve them no matter what I do. Other times I find them very easy and I can tell the answer just by looking at them."
"It might be because of the illness. The doctor also said that sick people have poor attention, slow reaction, and poor memory."
Shi Qian didn't care; he didn't think that poor grades were a sad thing that couldn't be mentioned.
What illness do you have?
Since Meng Qing came to the Shi family, everyone has said that Shi Qian is in poor health. Even in his precognitive dreams, Shi Qian always looks sickly, but no one has ever mentioned what kind of illness he has.
"I don't know either. Maybe it's some incurable disease? It doesn't matter. I'll just live one day at a time."
