Chapter 2 Willingness (2/2)

As soon as I arrived at the Mu family's gate, I saw the Mu family members pushing a cart out.

Mu Dasheng, who has difficulty moving around, sat on the cart.

Mu Dasheng is the head of the eldest branch of the Mu family. In his youth, he was a hunter. Once, he went hunting in the mountains with the villagers and encountered a tiger.

In an attempt to save his companion, Mu Dasheng was bitten on the leg by a tiger and fell off a cliff, never to be able to stand up again.

Among those rescued was Lin Dajiang, the village chief.

When Mu Dasheng saw the village chief approaching, he started nagging his wife.

"Look, look, I told you to travel light. All this stuff will only slow things down."

After finishing speaking, Mu Dasheng looked at Village Chief Lin with a face full of apology.

"Dajiang, we're sorry to have troubled you. Are we the only ones left?"

Village Chief Lin shook his head.

"No, Brother Dasheng, there's no rush. There are still several households to be visited. I just came to check on them out of concern."

After the village chief finished speaking, he looked at Mu Chunping, who was pulling the cart.

“Chunping, my donkey cart is at the village entrance. Why don’t you carry your father onto my donkey cart?”

Hearing Village Chief Lin's words, Mu Dasheng shook his head.

"We don't need Dajiang anymore, we can manage on our own."

You are the village chief, and there are many people in the village who are worse off than my family.

Your family only has one donkey cart, which isn't even big enough to hold your own things, let alone people.

"If I sit on your donkey cart, and then this woman in the village refuses to walk anymore, and that child can't walk anymore and tries to put them on your cart, would you refuse or agree?"

Mu Dasheng paused for a moment before continuing.

"The journey of fleeing famine is already difficult. In order to survive, we must unite as one, but we must also maintain a proper distance."

Otherwise, when the villagers are starving and exhausted, they might even steal from our own village.

We brothers grew up together, practically exposing our butts to each other, and since there are no outsiders here, I'll just say it directly.

Village Chief Lin looked at Mu Dasheng seriously.

"Brother Dasheng, please speak."

Mu Dasheng pondered for a moment and then said,

“You’re the village chief. From now on, the hundreds of people in our Linshang Village will depend on your command. You can’t just be a good person all the time. You have to be tough when necessary, otherwise we’ll have a lot of trouble along the way.”

Village Chief Lin frowned, recalling the troublesome women in the village, and realized that Mu Dasheng's words made a lot of sense.

"Brother Dasheng, it's good that you reminded me, otherwise these women would have been really hard to deal with when they started throwing tantrums."

"Well then, since you have a lot of kids, they can't walk at the back. You'll all follow behind my family on the way, so we can look out for each other."

Mu Dasheng nodded.

"Okay, let's hurry up and go. It's getting late. Since we're going to leave anyway, let's set off as soon as possible."

...

When the group arrived at the village entrance, Village Chief Lin quickly counted the number of people. Currently, Linshang Village has a total of 51 households and 477 people.

After the headcount was completed, Village Chief Lin stood at the front of the line, intently looking at the villagers.

"With natural disasters and man-made calamities, there is no way for us to survive if we continue to stay here. I will ask you one more time: are you willing to go south with Lin to escape the famine? If not, you can stay or leave on your own."

"willing!"

"We are willing!"

"We've heard that the climate is warm and the weather is favorable in the south. Staying here is a dead end. We're willing to follow the village chief to the south to find a way to survive."
