Chapter Seventy: Killing the Demon 10
Lu Cen searched his memory, then suddenly his eyes lit up. He blinked and said, "I've never been to Galilee City. Maybe I've seen it in a dream."
Lisa quickly understood what he meant. She had only been half-doubting before, but now she was certain that this person was Lu Cen.
Although she didn't know why he was hiding his identity, she suppressed her doubts because of their previous collaboration on the dungeon.
Ados said from the side, "This is Miss Lisa, the youngest daughter of Lord Galo."
“Miss Lisa, this is Earl Rosent's son, Inlai, from the town of Sk.
"Hello." Chen Ning said, getting to the most important thing at the moment, "A few days ago, my guards accidentally killed a golden frog chick. Since then, this group has been relentlessly pursuing us. Of the twenty guards I brought, only two are left, and one of the maids has also died. Two days ago, we were being chased by the golden frogs, and it was this warrior who saved us. I didn't expect to meet you. I wonder if you have any good ideas on how to get rid of the golden frogs' pursuit."
“Miss Lisa, my name is Luther, and I am Inlai’s fiancé. I didn’t expect you to know Ados.” Luther said that first, then continued, “A little further ahead, there is a formidable chasm, steep and treacherous, with a rushing river below. The Golden Frog is too small to cross the river and the chasm.”
Upon hearing the word "fiancé," Ados's face turned extremely pale.
All I heard was Chen Ning asking, "Approximately how long will it take to get there?"
"It's not far. If we rest tonight and set off early tomorrow morning, we should arrive around noon."
Ados suppressed his rage and objected, "We can abandon the cart, but not the horse. If we take that narrow path over the chasm, we'll have to walk from there, and we don't have that much time."
Luther said nonchalantly, "Go wherever you want, Inlai and I will go back to town."
Ados looked at him coldly, "He won't go with you."
Luther was baffled. "I'm his fiancé. If he won't come with me, is he going to go with you?"
Ados: "Are you taking him back to his death?"
Luther frowned: "What do you mean?"
Lisa kindly explained, "It's about what I told you before. The demons are about to breach the city, and we need to find Ice Blade."
Luther was incredulous. He thought this woman was crazy, just trying to fool him by saying she was looking for some treasure that she couldn't tell him. He never expected it to be true!
"Inlai, are you going too?"
Lu Cen was overwhelmed by the two's sharp exchanges and felt inexplicably guilty. Seeing Lu De looking over, he said, "I have to go."
Luther remained silent.
After a while, he said, "I don't have any relatives in town. If you want to go, I will definitely go with you. After finding Ice Blade, I will bring you back safely."
Ados was too lazy to listen to his heartfelt words. He coldly dragged Lucen to the fire, not wanting to say another word.
Luther sensed something was wrong lately; his gaze was sharp as an arrow, as if he wanted to shoot a hole through Ados's back.
During the evening activities, Lu Cen first glanced at Chen Ning, then slowly walked to an open space away from the crowd, but without leaving their sight.
Chen Ning understood and moved closer. The two of them faced away from the crowd, a position that ensured they would notice anyone approaching immediately.
Chen Ning lowered his voice, "My mission is to kill the last demon. Is yours the same as mine?"
"Same."
Chen Ning's tense nerves relaxed a little. Since entering the instance, she had been fighting alone and facing the demon horde by herself. Her nerves were on the verge of collapse. She had no idea how to complete this task and had no clue what to do.
The city lord sent her to find Ice Blade and assigned someone to her, so she came completely bewildered.
However, she got off to a bad start. On the second day, she encountered the Golden Frog and her manpower was quickly depleted. She even thought she would die in this instance.
Lu Cen asked, "Is the maid next to you the same maid from the player game?"
“No.” Chen Ning shook his head. “I secretly tested her and observed her behavior. She doesn’t seem like a player.”
"What about the one who died?"
This time, Chen Ning paused for a moment before saying, "I don't think so."
Lu Cen didn't ask her for her reasoning, but said, "Besides you and me, the captain of the guard team is a player. Based on our contact, his mission should be the same as ours, with an 80% probability. Moreover, he has already discovered my player identity."
Chen Ning had assumed that the guard captain in Galer was a player, having secretly hinted at it several times, but he never expected to find out in the town of Sk.
"Besides the three of us, there are four other players who haven't shown up yet. I suspect this is a PvP dungeon."
"Combat dungeons?"
"There is a high probability."
Chen Ning's face darkened. "The mission description doesn't specify that this is a PvP instance. What's your basis for this claim?"
"From the mission perspective, we need to find the Ice Blade and the Demon, but why does the dungeon give us such reasonable background identities and put us in different places? If it's the same mission, there's no need to make it so complicated."
"Furthermore, the focus of this mission is the Ice Blade, which is mentioned in the mission and the books, so it's easy to figure out. However, I encountered a murder in town, which was committed by a demon. I think this murder was a trap set by the other side to delay our search for the Ice Blade, in order to confuse the players and make them make the wrong judgment."
Chen Ning asked in bewilderment, "Can they command demons to do things for them?"
"They are not necessarily human beings."
Chen Ning's eyes widened in disbelief, realizing Lu Cen's underlying meaning.
If she were to transform into that hideous demon, she would be terrified of herself.
Lu Cen reminded her, "Don't forget, this is just an identity. Demons can live as humans, so they will still look like humans."
These words did not comfort Chen Ning. "If it really is a confrontation instance, they are in the shadows while we are in the open. The situation is very unfavorable for us. It's easy to dodge a spear in the open, but hard to guard against an arrow in the dark. What should we do?"
Lu Cen said, "We don't know their identities, and they don't know ours. Even if they want to make a move, it won't be so easy. As long as we find the Ice Blade as soon as possible, the initiative will be in our hands. So we must be careful with our words and actions and disguise our player identities."
"Even if we find the Ice Blade, who is that demon?"
Lu Cen remained silent; this was also something he couldn't understand.
Since entering the forest, he had a strong feeling that this instance had only truly begun from the moment he stepped into it.
Aside from the demon, the seven players are another point of suspicion.
For the sake of fairness, the number of players in a battle should generally be equal, but this instance has one extra player.
Who is this extra person?
What kind of mission is it?
"Inlai".
The two stopped talking and each leaned against a tree.
Luther gripped Lucen's hand tightly and led him to the fire. "It's late, be careful not to catch a cold."
As soon as the two sat down, Ados, holding two green fruits with water dripping from his fingers, saw Luther and his face turned cold. Since Luther's appearance that afternoon, Ados's emotions had become an uncontrollable river, sometimes surging and turbulent, sometimes murky and chaotic.
He controlled his emotions, sat down to Lu Cen's right, picked up a green fruit and put it in Lu Cen's mouth. Half of it went in at once, and Lu Cen's lips bulged and turned slightly red. Lu Cen took a bite and found it to be sweet with a hint of bitterness, very juicy, and glistening with moisture. He thanked him and finished the fruit, feeling warm all over.
He disliked that the two were standing too close, so he went back to his car alone.
Ados scoffed, "The Earl had long intended to annul the engagement. You wanted to escape, so you came to the Rohi Forest. Otherwise, you would have no relationship with him at this point, and you would have no reason to cling to him."
“The Earl wants to annul the engagement simply because I have nothing of value. Once I join the guard, this problem will be easily solved. But you, Ados, coveting someone else's partner, such a despicable act as if you were a rat in a gutter, don't you feel ashamed? It seems that after a few years away from home, your skin has become as thick as a city wall.” Luther paused and then said, “Calling us 'entangled' is not accurate; we are inseparable.”
"Shouldn't you be the one who feels ashamed?" Ados said calmly. "Inlai was born into a very privileged family and has never suffered hardship. He is surrounded by luxury and jewels. Even if you become a guard, what good will honor bring him? You are using the marriage as a pretext to do selfish things. If you really care about him, you should put yourself in his shoes."
"There aren't many people as high-sounding as you these days. You say so much that it's for his own good, but what, he's with you just because it's for his own good? Where do you get your confidence? Are you a god in the sky or a king on earth? You're just the son of a town mayor. Where does your sense of superiority come from? I'm really curious, did you eat something you shouldn't have outside? Is there something wrong with your brain?"
“No matter what, I’m still a little better than you in every way.” Ados scrutinized him from head to toe. “I advised you to go back and tell the Earl that you agree to annul the engagement. Otherwise, I’m not always this good-tempered.”
"Are you better at horsemanship or archery than me?" Luther said disdainfully. "Putting aside your status as the mayor's son, what are you anyway?"
Ados laughed in anger, his eyes flashing with icy daggers. "And what are you! You've been despicable since childhood, always stealing and cheating. Because Lai was kind-hearted and didn't want to break off the engagement and hurt you, you took advantage of his easy-going nature, clinging to his fiancé's identity for so many years. What makes you think you're good enough for him!"
"You saw me stealing chickens and dogs with your own eyes?" Luther said slowly, "But you, at such a young age, are not learning good things. You secretly watched girls bathe and got your leg broken, lying in bed for three months. You've completely disgraced the town of Sk! Do you think Inlai would be interested in a dissolute like you? Even if the sky falls, it's unlikely. I advise you to keep your distance from him, or my arrow might accidentally hit someone I shouldn't."
"I was peeping at a girl bathing, and I was just trying to help when I got bitten by a stray dog!" Ados said viciously, his eyes bloodshot. "You've twisted the truth! You were the one who spread those rumors back then, weren't you? You're truly a shameless, stinking rat!"
