In the Dark (2)
The girl was timid, and the policeman's slamming of the table frightened her so much that she froze, her brow furrowed and her eyes filled with fear. Song Shiwen leaned against the officer's desk, one leg draped over the other, watching the show. He had initially felt a modicum of sympathy for her, but hearing her abuse a cat made it impossible. He pondered the commonplace conclusions of "Don't judge a book by its cover" and "What a waste of such a kind and innocent appearance; it must be easy to deceive people."
"Eh...how cruel...you're also a cat, right? How could you have the heart to do that?"
"Why are you everywhere? Go sit over there and continue to call your teacher. Call yourself. If he doesn't come, you can't leave. Don't talk to me about friendship. I treat everyone equally." Perhaps he was annoyed by working overtime for a long time, and the old policeman had a tough attitude.
Song Shiwen obediently walked away and found a stool to sit on. Within a second, he moved the stool back over. The police officer stopped chasing him away.
"Don't be afraid, sister. Tell us about any difficulties you have. As long as we haven't done anything wrong, we shouldn't be afraid, okay?" Song Shiwen once again took the lead in acting as a lobbyist before the police. "Don't you have a home address? The first thing you should do when you get here is to introduce yourself. Your identity is unknown, right? Let me see..."
Song Shiwen leaned over to the policeman's desk and took a look before being rejected. "Don't even have a name? Eh? I remember you were the one who often looked for Hui Zifeng at the gate of our school?"
The girl's eyes widened instantly as she stared at Song Shiwen, a hint of fear etched in her furrowed brows. It was obvious that Song Shiwen had guessed correctly.
"You know her?" The policeman saw this and showed a hint of relief between his brows. He finally got a clue, but he didn't forget to criticize Song Shiwen, "Why didn't you tell me earlier if you knew her? What's her name? Where does she live? What's her parents' contact number?"
Song Shiwen's face wrinkled up, and he shrank back in disgust. "How should I know? They're not looking for me. Could they be someone from Hui Zifeng?"
Just as he was debating whether to notify Hui Zifeng, someone walked in. The police and Song Shiwen both went to see who it was at this hour. Song Shiwen laughed awkwardly and stood up to greet the visitor. It was Hui Zifeng. "I was looking for you. What brings you here?"
Hui Zifeng took off his schoolbag, took out his ID and showed it to the police, while explaining why he was there.
"Teacher Qin drank too much. I didn't expect that students would get into trouble on a day like today. I wasn't prepared in advance, so I had to ask me to come." Hui Zifeng was businesslike and serious. There was no trace of sarcasm in his words. Song Shiwen touched his nose embarrassedly, glanced back at the girl, and caught her peeking at Hui Zifeng again. "Officer Ren, I am also Song Shiwen's teacher. If this doesn't work, here is Teacher Qin's letter of authorization. Do you think I can take Song Shiwen away?"
Song Shiwen covered his mouth and nose and uttered a dull "hum". He would not thank Hui Zifeng for this, but instead felt that Hui Zifeng had taken on this job to embarrass him. But now was not the time to worry about this. Officer Ren agreed that Song Shiwen be taken away, but he didn't listen at all. He dodged and stood beside Hui Zifeng. The girl who was originally blocked by him appeared completely in Hui Zifeng's field of vision. Song Shiwen bumped Hui Zifeng's shoulder, "Look, is this the little girl who often comes to the school gate to look for you? Does she look familiar?"
Hui Zifeng didn't bother to look up, but Song Shiwen kept bumping into him. He glared at him unhappily. He hadn't wanted to get involved in his affairs in the first place, and now he was being coaxed into doing so? Song Shiwen winked at him, and Hui Zifeng sighed barely audibly and looked at the girl. She looked back.
As if they were looking at each other from afar. Perhaps they were familiar with each other before, but now they are strangers. Hui Zifeng had no impression of the girl, but the look in her eyes when she looked at him was too emotional. He nodded and lied helplessly. The rumor that there was a beautiful girl at the school gate who had been looking for him was still conveyed to him by kind people. He went to look for her, but did not see her. He chose to follow Song Shiwen's wishes and lie in front of the police. In fact, he wanted to do a favor, hoping that Song Shiwen would remember this kindness in the future and not cause trouble for him and Shuixi again. On the other hand, he chose to believe Song Shiwen.
"Look, Uncle Ren, my respected teacher Hui knows her. Let's take her with us, shall we?" Song Shiwen said with a smile. Hui Zifeng was no longer willing to speak. He didn't know what the story was, and he didn't want to care.
"What's her name?" the police officer picked up a pen and prepared to write it down, looking up at Hui Zifeng. "Do you have her age, address, and contact number?"
Hui Zifeng remained silent. Song Shiwen's lies were exposed, but he continued to pester her, "Do you have any evidence that she's a cat abuser?"
After saying this, Song Shiwen lost her confidence. It was because of something that she was handcuffed here.
The policeman patiently pulled out the evidence from the drawer. When Song Shiwen approached to take a look, the policeman immediately tried to put it away, saying in a bad mood, "This knife belongs to her. There happened to be an eyewitness who saw her on the day she was arrested."
Song Shiwen turned around because the girl was pulling at the back of his collar. As he moved closer, he heard the girl hurriedly say, "Don't look." Song Shiwen was now even more suspicious of the relationship between the two, wondering if she was some kind of pervert.
"Uncle Ren, you must not have looked carefully." Song Shiwen explained calmly, letting the girl pull at his clothes from behind. He gradually realized that the girl was probably taking the blame for him... Why would a stranger do such a thing? "My name is engraved on the inside of the sheath of this knife. It's mine. Coincidentally, I lost my knife before you caught her, and I don't know who picked it up."
Song Shiwen and Hui Zifeng both knew who that person was. Song Shiwen glanced at Hui Zifeng, who refused to take the hint but spoke righteously, "I know the man you're talking about, officer. The person who found his knife is most likely my friend, Shuixi. He's nearly 1.9 meters tall, has single eyelids, and a mole above his right eyebrow."
"Oh, right. It was this guy we bumped into that day, and he also gave his name and contact information. What happened that day? Girl, why didn't you say anything?"
"This knife..." Zang Yue thought back to that day. Shuixi's actions were definitely leading her to confess... That was the way it was, right? For a moment, she became uncertain, wondering if it was her own stupidity that had kept her up all this time. "Isn't this knife evidence of a cat abuser? There's cat blood on it... Why..."
Why don’t you suspect that Song Shiwen is a cat abuser?
Everyone could see the girl's confusion. Song Shiwen was even more convinced that she was suffering under false charges to protect him. He glanced at the wound on the girl's wrist and felt a sudden pain in his heart. He felt a little dizzy, but fortunately Hui Zifeng had to support him.
"Song Shiwen was the one who discovered this, and he's been helping to find evidence. We need to question Shuixi again. Okay, you all can go, Teacher Hui. Take both of you with you, so I don't have to worry about you." The police officer uncuffed Cang Yue and set her free. He couldn't wait to get her out, but then hesitated. "This girl hasn't said a word..."
"My name is Lu Cangyue." She was worried that she would be detained again, so she answered hurriedly, "If the officer needs to find me, he can find Shuixi. He knows me and knows how to find me."
Shuixi was tracking her cat, so he must be the one torturing the cat. That person had some tricks up his sleeve and was closely related to Hui Zifeng. What kind of person was Hui Zifeng? She looked at Hui Zifeng openly.
Hui Zifeng was helping Song Shiwen walk out of the police station with difficulty. When they reached the door, they both paused because Cang Yue had stopped. They both noticed Cang Yue staring at Hui Zifeng. Song Shiwen shielded Hui Zifeng's face with his hands, and Hui Zifeng, unwilling to pretend for even a second, quickly stepped back. Song Shiwen smiled at Cang Yue and said, "Come with me. I'll take you home, Xiaolu."
He uttered the two words, "Little Deer," earnestly. Many thoughts raced through his mind, and in the split second it took him to realize the decision he had made. She had said her name, but in those few brief moments, he seemed to have forgotten it again. Only after straining to recall it did he suddenly realize how familiar the words were. It was as if, at some point, he had been calling out, "Little Deer... Little Deer..."
"I don't want to go with you."
The girl's blunt refusal was like a bucket of cold water poured over his head. Song Shiwen watched her eagerly as she walked over to Hui Zifeng and said, "Can you please take me to find Shuixi? He's the one who got me arrested, and my beloved child might be in his hands too."
What nonsense are you talking about? Hui Zifeng remained calm, just as decisive and merciless as she had just been to Song Shiwen. It seemed that there was no room for turning back. "No."
Song Shiwen couldn't help but speak for her, but Hui Zifeng spoke first, "Do you want me to take you home? I think you'll definitely refuse, so my mission ends here. I hope you can let your teacher know you're safe when you get back to school."
He spoke emotionlessly, like a recitation machine, his expression remarkably polite. Song Shiwen waved his hand and chuckled, "Go ahead." Hui Zifeng took a few steps forward, putting a distance of three to five meters between him and the remaining two. Cang Yue angrily tried to chase after them, but Song Shiwen grabbed his arm.
"Don't go yet. I have something to ask you," Song Shiwen said, looking into her eyes. He struggled to find any memory of her in his mind, only a vague feeling that it was there and not there. "Do you think I'm that cat abuser, so I'd rather sit there and suffer than say anything? Did you know me before? Oh, I don't think I've lost my memory, I'm not sick, and I'm in good health. How could I not remember you? Who are you? You must tell me clearly, or I won't let you go."
Cang Yue didn't know what to say for a moment. Seeing a hint of reluctance in his eyes, she made up her mind to cut off all feelings for Song Shiwen. She asked, "Then how did you know I was the one who had been looking for Hui Zifeng?"
Song Shiwen didn't rush to ask more questions since he didn't get an answer to his question. He replied, "It was just a random guess! But I always felt like I knew you. I didn't expect it to be a lucky coincidence."
Song Shiwen's eyes showed regret. Cang Yue saw this and frantically blocked his eyes and turned away. "I'm leaving. Don't follow me."
Song Shiwen shouted from behind, "Are you sure you're looking for someone named Hui Zifeng, not me?"
How did he know? Why did he repeatedly hint that he still remembered her? Was he in love with her? The last time they were together, Cang Yue had believed they were in love with each other. Love could last, so she decided that Song Shiwen, who resonated with her in such a vast sea of people, was the one she was looking for.
Zang Yue turned and said goodbye again. A car drove by, its windows open, and the occupant in the back seat stared at Zang Yue and Song Shiwen. Song Shiwen's gaze unconsciously shifted behind Xiao Lu. It was Shui Xi, standing on the second-floor balcony across the way, staring at them with a condescending, disdainful air that was truly unpleasant. Then, as the car passed by, Song Shiwen first caught sight of a neatly tailored gray Mao suit, then the man's face. He felt the same familiar feeling, but he couldn't place where he'd seen it before, and his head ached.
At the same time, Zang Yue's gaze shifted to behind Song Shiwen. A thin figure stood in the shadows of the gate, but Zang Yue could still clearly see his eyes. She waved at him. After all, the boy had often given her sympathetic glances in the police station these past few days. She remembered his name: Tan Songqi.
