Chapter 12 Building a House

Sun Ye entered the house and found a pile of sweet potatoes and potatoes at the head and foot of the bed, as well as several bags of corn and rice.

Divide the family and divide the food?

In the evening, each room no longer eats together, but cooks its own food.

Only then did Sun Ye feel the difference of the separation. The little ones stopped chattering and making noise. They felt the atmosphere was weird.

The smoke from the cooking stove curled up, swirling in the wind and slowly fading into light clouds, leaving no trace. As the sun set, the red glow illuminated half the sky.

There was no table, and the dishes were served on a long bench. The family of five sat on small stools and ate their first meal after separating.

The same food tastes different in different people's mouths. Dad Sun's food tastes like chewing wax. He eats mechanically and his whole mind is absent.

Aunt Sun ate it with big mouthfuls, it was so delicious.

Sun Ye picked up a piece of food with chopsticks, put it in his mouth and chewed it slowly, elegantly and naturally.

They are all members of the Sun family, but Sun Ye's every move is so good-looking that eating at the same table with Sun Ye makes others look vulgar.

There is no rule in the Sun family that one should not talk while eating. After Sun's mother swallowed her food, she knocked on Sun's father's bowl:

"If you can't eat it, don't eat it. Feed it to the chickens! You're acting so depressed. One day isn't enough for you. You look like a baby that hasn't been weaned yet. It's really annoying."

After hearing this, Mr. Sun did not argue, put down his bowl and chopsticks, and went out.

Sun Sen and Sun Lin looked at each other, feeling a little at a loss for a moment.

"Eat your own food and ignore your father, that hypocritical guy. You'll know how powerful you are when you're hungry."

Sun Ye did not make any suggestions throughout the whole process. She believed that talking while eating was impolite, and that the etiquette that had been ingrained in people for thousands of years could not be changed easily.

As the sky grew darker, there was still no sign of Dad Sun. Although Mom Sun didn't say anything, she kept looking at the door and was obviously worried about Dad Sun.

Sun Ye couldn't bear it anymore and said, "Mom, if you're worried about Dad, go look for him..."

"What are you looking for? How could he get lost when he's this old? Who said I was worried about your dad? Don't talk nonsense."

Say one thing and mean another!

Sun Ye thought to himself: That thing is almost at the door and he is still being stubborn.

"Mom, I'm worried about Dad. Please go look for him. I'm afraid of the dark and I don't dare to go."

As children, of course we cannot carelessly expose our parents' little thoughts. On the contrary, we have to find ways to fulfill them. Oh, adults are so tired!

With Sun Ye as an excuse, Sun's mother hurried out. Seeing this, Sun Ye shook his head and found it quite funny.

After a while, Sun's mother and father came back. They washed their feet, lay on the bed, chatted and went to sleep.

"I just went out for a walk and specifically looked at the homestead. The location is good."

Oh! This time, Sun Ye looked at Dad with new eyes. She thought that Dad would find a place where no one was around to secretly wipe away his tears.

When Sun Ye heard this, he immediately became alert and asked, "Where is the homestead?"

"It's the vacant land on the east side of the village, next to the educated youth center. It's quite far from here."

Sun Ye, a sent-down youth cadre, knew where Teacher Li Qingqing lived. Sun Ye recalled that the terrain there was quite good.

The land is large, and if we build a house, there is a small hillside behind the house. On the left is the educated youth site, separated by a piece of land, which should be our own private plot.

On the right is Sun Taohua's house. People in the village say that they are an honest family and it is easy to get along with their neighbors.

What satisfied Sun Ye the most was the small hill behind the house. She fenced it off and planted flowers. It was so beautiful. The hill was barren anyway, and the yield of whatever she planted was reduced, so no one in the village was willing to cultivate it.

"Dad, it's nice there."

Sun Ye commented sincerely.

“It’s just a little distance from the old house.”

"So when are we going to build the house?"

"It's better to build a house sooner rather than later. I want to take advantage of the fact that the villagers are not busy now and speed up the construction. Tomorrow I will go and get some people to help with the construction."

"Ah, Dad, you're the best!"

Sun Ye didn't expect her father to be so quick. She thought it would take at least until next year to be put on the agenda.

"Mother, I thought, since we don't have much money, we won't build a house made of bricks and tiles."

"That's exactly the reason. There are so many trees on the mountain that have already matured. Just say hello to the team and let them deduct some of the centimeters."

"Well, this will save you a lot of money. But I'm sorry, my wife, you'll have to live in a tiled house if you follow me."

"Brother Jun, I'm not wronged."

"Xiu-jin..."

"Brother Jun..."

Dad Sun held Mom's hand and stroked it. He vaguely remembered that her hand was smooth and tender when they first got married, and it didn't look like this.

The two of them were getting closer and closer. Mother Sun accidentally looked up and saw three heads. She paused, without moving at all. She stood there stiffly, her mind blank.

"The child is watching!"

Mother Sun glared at Father Sun, pulled her hand away, lowered her head, and her face flushed with shame.

On this side, the three siblings stared at their grandparents with their eyes wide open, without blinking for a long time.

When Dad Sun turned around, he saw Sun Sen and Sun Lin had sneaked up at some point. The three siblings were sitting in a row with identical expressions, which made Dad Sun's ears turn red with embarrassment.

Hey, Sun Ye rubbed his arms, goose bumps all over the floor, and shivered. This show of affection made people's scalps tingle.

Father Sun had a stern face and a firm tone: "It's already late, and you're still not asleep. If you're late for school tomorrow, I'll spank me."

He spoke incoherently, and his aggressiveness only made his presence known, without any deterrent power at all.

But Sun Lin still replied: "Dad, are you beating me with a bamboo stick?"

"Well, I'll spank you until your butt is bruised. Are you afraid?"

"Okay, I'll go later tomorrow. Dad, you have to keep your word and slap yourself. We all heard it!"

"Sleep, sleep, little bastard!"

Sun Lin curled his lips and went to the inner room to sleep with Sun Sen.

Sun Ye stared at the backs of her two brothers with longing eyes, asking them not to let her endure the darkness of the night alone.

"Ye Zi, it's late, go to bed early."

Mother Sun was very gentle, with tears in her eyes. Sun Ye had no idea what to do and could only force himself to fall asleep as quickly as possible to avoid embarrassment.

How could things turn out like this? Is her presence too low? She was clearly still talking to Sun's father just a moment ago.

I can’t figure it out!

As expected, her body was moved, and after a while, her eyelashes trembled, and she couldn't hold it in any longer. She forgot to go to the toilet before going to bed. It was really...

I feel terrible, with a thin layer of sweat on my forehead. The more I think about this, the easier it is to pee. My bladder is so full that I can't even touch it. Why isn't it over yet?

Time seemed to pass exceptionally slowly. Sun Ye had reached her limit. She didn't care about anything else. She threw back the quilt, rolled over, got out of bed, and ran out with a clatter.

The whole house was petrified.

Sun Ye squatted in the vegetable garden, sincerely sighing how happy it was to be able to pee freely.

It is not good to sleep in the same bed, and Sun Ye experienced it again.

This night was destined to be full of embarrassment.

The next day, Sun Ye ran away early. She couldn't stand the look that her father gave her from time to time. It wasn't her fault.

When Sun Ye came home from school, the house was deserted and no one was there.

He should be going to the homestead. He hurriedly put down his schoolbag, ran to the gate, tidied up his messy hair, and went out to the homestead leisurely, with his hair and clothes neatly arranged.

The high priest has a heavy burden!

The homestead here is bustling with activity. Everyone in the team who can come has come to lend a hand. It is also not difficult for the villagers to help. It will be no problem to finish the construction before the spring plowing.

The Sun family is responsible for the meals. They can't just not give the people who come to help without eating. Sun's mother built a stove with stones nearby and took the big pot from home to use.

Now that school is over, the kids in the team come to join in the fun, picking up the planed wood chips and scattering them here and there, just trying to cause trouble.

They chased and played around, and when they saw people working, they would touch the back of their heads and run away. It was a rare and fresh place to play.

Sun Ye watched the house being built bit by bit, even the beams being raised with great care. Since she couldn't afford candy, she could only sprinkle some soybeans as a token of appreciation, a treat for the children. A group of children, including Sun Ye, cried out in excitement. She loved days like this.

Looking up at the high place, I saw Father Sun, Uncle Sun, Uncle Sun II, and Uncle Sun. Each of them was holding a basket and shouting, "Let's put up the beam!"

Soybeans fell from the sky, mixed with a small amount of Double Happiness Candy. Someone picked up the candy and shouted happily: "I found candy, there is candy!"

For a moment, there was chaos on the ground, and I wanted to keep my eyes and ears open.

Influenced by this atmosphere, Sun Ye also bent down and joined the battlefield. She and a child of the same age grabbed a candy at the same time. The child looked up and glanced at Sun Ye, then held one end of the candy tightly, staring with wide eyes, and refused to let go.

Sun Ye remembered this boy, who was in the same class as her. He was talkative and couldn't sit still. His name seemed to be Li Xiaobao.

He is not from the Forward Brigade. He may have heard the news and came here after school.

Sun Ye didn't want to compete with a child for food, so he let go. Unexpectedly, Li Xiaobao fell on his butt, and both of them were dumbfounded for a moment.

Sun Ye wanted to go over and help him, but the place was still in chaos and people rushed out to block her way. When there was no one around, Li Xiaobao joined the fight again.

After a while, all the soybeans were scattered and all the ground was picked up. The children opened their pockets and compared who had picked up more.

Sun Ye didn't pick up many, just a dozen or so.

Sun Miao patted Sun Ye's shoulder, looking very proud. He took out a handful and gave it to Sun Ye, saying, "I knew you couldn't pick up much. Sister Miao, I can, so I'll give it to you!"

Sun Ye was at a loss whether to laugh or cry. Sun Miao had always been a good-tempered person. When he learned that he was going to be separated from Sun Ye, he secretly shed a lot of tears. It was only when Aunt Sun told her that they could still play together that he calmed down.

Li Xiaobao from the Lotus Brigade had so much fun that he showed no sign of going home. His parents went to the school to find out that their precious child didn't come home after school, which made them very anxious.

"Li Xiaobao, Xiaobao, where are you?"

Hearing the shouts from afar, Li Xiaobao quickly responded: "Mom, I'm here!"

He ran to his parents, but what greeted him was not a good end. It was said that his father's cane was broken.

The next day, Li Xiaobao stood when he went to school.

After the beams were put up, construction would be quick. In another seven or eight days, the house would be completed. Our wallets were empty and there was little food left.

After emptying out all the savings of the third family and owing the brigade more than 100 work points, he was able to get five thatched houses.

After drying the house for a day or two, we hurriedly moved in, but it was too late because spring plowing had begun.

Sun Ye's family had wild vegetables to eat, so they were able to get by. However, their living standards had indeed declined a lot, which made Sun Ye have some ideas.

In the middle of the night, he would always take out a piece of rice and look at it, unable to make up his mind.
