Chapter 18: What We Saw

Mother Sun picked up Sun Ye and walked in the opposite direction of the group.

Sun Ye saw pedestrians avoiding him, hurriedly walking past with their heads down, wishing to stay as far away as possible. Could they be maintaining public order? But there was no need to be so afraid, right? I didn't quite understand.

Sun Ye tugged at his mother, pointed at the group of people and asked, "Mom, what are these people doing?"

Sun's mother was so scared that she quickly grabbed Sun Ye's hand and put it away. It would be a disaster if someone saw it.

"Catch the bad guys."

Sun Ma's tone was so gentle that it seemed as if it could be blown away by a gust of wind.

Seeing that his mother was silent, Sun Ye realized that something bad might have happened, so he stopped asking questions, but he still kept a wary eye on her.

The town is different.

Sun Ye saw some people riding on two round wheels that were not pulled by oxen or horses and were running very fast. He continued to ask his mother, "Mom, what is this?"

“That’s called a bicycle.”

"Bicycle? Mom, this one is faster. Let's buy one for our family."

"Buy? I, your mother, have been working in the fields for ten years and I'm afraid I still can't afford a bicycle."

Mother Sun couldn't help but smile. Not to mention her own family, no one in the entire team could afford a bicycle. Even if they had that much money, they might not be able to get a bicycle ticket.

"Oh, it's so expensive."

"Mom, when I grow up I will buy you a bicycle!"

"Okay, Mom is waiting for Ye Zi's bike."

When we arrived at the supply and marketing cooperative, we found a large bungalow with three sides filled with things, from small items like needles and thread to large items like televisions.

The supply and marketing cooperative was packed with people like sardines. Mother Sun held Sun Ye tightly and pushed forward with all her might. Sun Ye was like the filling in a sandwich. At a glance, the place was crowded with heads of people.

"Self-reliance and hard work. Comrade, please give me a pound of sugar."

"Serve the people. Yes, comrade."

The sound of talking at the counter reached Sun Ye's ears. She turned her head and looked over there. An old lady with a Hu Lan hairstyle and clothes with only a few patches took out a cloth bag, peeled it open layer by layer, revealing colorful banknotes, and took out a few to give to the salesperson.

Sun Ye could tell at a glance that this lady came from a well-off family, and the patches on her clothes were just for show.

Is it a city dweller's peculiar habit to patch up perfectly good clothes? She wished there weren't any patches on her clothes at all; they were truly ugly.

And the way of speaking is too awkward. What's the point of adding that sentence in front? I don't understand.

Mother Sun wants to buy some needles and thread, wool, elastic bands, wicks, and all sorts of miscellaneous things today.

Every time Sun's mother said something, she would add something that Sun Ye thought was unnecessary. Could it be that she did this specifically for shopping?

Sun Ye accidentally caught a glimpse of a rectangular object. There were few people at the counter.

Sun Ye pointed over there and asked his mother to go over there. His mother had already bought what she wanted and it was still early, so she went over there as Sun Ye asked.

The salesperson here glanced at Sun Ye and his mother, but didn't move. He just sat on the chair and cracked melon seeds, showing no service attitude at all.

Mother Sun felt a little embarrassed, tugging at the hem of her clothes and glancing at the salesperson from time to time. Seeing that the salesperson didn't show any contempt, she felt a little relieved.

Stethoscope steering wheel, state cadre salesman. It can be seen that salesman is an enviable iron rice bowl. Whoever hires a salesman can take some defective products home at a low price. In short, there are many benefits, which also cultivates a certain arrogance in salesmen.

"Mom, what is this?"

It seems that after arriving in the city, Sun Ye only knows how to say this.

"This is a radio."

"Radio? Is that the one in the captain's house?"

"Yes."

Sun Ye nodded, not quite understanding, and pointed to another square object:

"Which one?"

"That's a TV."

"TV? What's it for?"

Sun Ye had endless questions. Sun's mother noticed the salesperson looking over there and became a little nervous, but she still replied, "Yes, there's someone inside."

Sun Ye opened her mouth wide and turned to look at the TV which was not even as tall as her. Could it possibly hold a person? Was it a treasure?

"Mom, can you fit in? I want to be in the TV too."

Knowing yourself and your enemy, she wanted to find out what secrets were hidden inside, so that she wouldn't get trapped inside and unable to get out one day.

Mother Sun smiled awkwardly and couldn't say anything. She didn't know why there was someone inside.

The salesperson clapped his hands, stood up, and said to Sun Ye and the others, "Serve the people. Kids, the people on TV were all pre-filmed and then imported, just like the ones in movies."

"Oh, then there aren't real people in there." Sun Ye lost interest immediately. She knew the movie, she had seen it before; someone in the village had shown it there, and it was quite interesting. She wanted a TV, but she certainly couldn't afford the price.

"Persistence is victory. I'm sorry, comrade, the child is still young and doesn't understand the quotations."

"My will is as strong as iron, and my tolerance is as vast as the sea. It's okay, children are always curious about everything."

Mother Sun smiled and touched Sun Ye's head. They met a kind-hearted salesperson.

It was almost time, so Sun's mother took Sun Ye to a state-owned restaurant and ordered three meat buns. When Sun Ye took out the food coupons, he felt sorry for Sun's mother. Sun's mother's reluctant expression made Sun Ye's teeth ache.

As soon as he walked out of the door, Sun Ye saw the group of people who came with him. They were bringing a young man with them, pulling and shoving, not allowing people to walk properly.

Sun's mother covered Sun Ye's eyes to prevent him from seeing. After a while, she let go, sighed, and went to the gathering place to wait.

"Mom, what's wrong with you?"

From the state-owned restaurant to here, Sun's mother's mood was obviously depressed. Was it those people? But weren't those people there to maintain law and order?

"nothing."

Sun's mother didn't want to say anything more, and Sun Ye didn't want to ask any more questions. She went home and asked Sun's father, who would definitely know.

We had to walk back home. The oxcart was so full of things we had bought that there was no place to step. At first, Sun Ye was stubborn and refused to let his mother carry him. But after an hour of walking, his soles were burning with pain, so he finally let his mother carry him on her back. Perhaps because Sun Ye had grown up and become heavier, she couldn't carry him anymore after a while.

Fortunately, the aunties and grandmas in the village took turns carrying Sun Ye. Sun Ye felt quite embarrassed, so he was carried all the way to the village entrance.

Sun Sen, Sun Lin and a group of boys were waiting there. When they saw the person coming back, they swarmed over and surrounded their old mother. Their eyes were fixed on the basket, and they were about to rummage through it.

"Senzi, carry the leaves on your back and let's go home."

Sun Sen is very responsible as an older brother, and although he is sometimes a little bit unreasonable, he is generally fine.

"Okay, little sister, come up!"

Sun Ye has become numb. It's her own fault that she can't even walk.

"Let's go home!"

Sun Sen carried Sun Ye on his back and ran like a gust of wind. Sun Ye was startled and quickly grabbed Sun Sen's shoulders. She didn't want to fall to the ground.

"Slow down, be careful not to let your sister fall." Sun's mother's voice sounded belatedly. At this time, Sun Sen had run a long way away.

Under the eaves, Dad Sun was chopping bamboo into thin strips to weave baskets, and the wider strips to weave backpacks. He was very versatile.

"Little sister, is the town fun? Are there many things in the supply and marketing cooperative? What is the town like?"

At this moment, Sun Lin seemed to have a hundred thousand questions, just like Sun Ye in the town. Only then did Sun Ye realize that she was like a bumpkin. Well, no, she was a bumpkin. Thinking of this, she felt much better.

"It's so much fun in town, with a bunch of people having fun, it's so impressive."

"There are so many things in the supply and marketing cooperative, there are so many, there is also a radio, the same as the one in the team leader's house, and a TV that can accommodate people, there are so many candies, and so many people." Sun Ye gestured, and after he finished speaking, he realized why he was so childish.

She wanted to bang her head on the ground. If time could go back to the past two minutes, she would definitely speak less and not talk so much.

"Really? Really?" Sun Lin was listening intently. Seeing Sun Ye stop, he urged, "Anything else? Anything else?"

“No more.”

"Gone? Impossible. I remember there was a house, a two-story cement house with bricks paved on the ground. Also, there was a supply and marketing cooperative with lots of food..."

Sun Ye looked at Brother Sun's chattering little mouth. It seemed that he knew everything, so she wasted her breath?

Seeing Sun's mother go into the room to put something away, Sun Ye reluctantly took a quick step and squatted beside Sun's father, asking her about her confusion: "Dad, what are those people with red armbands in the town doing? I saw them pushing someone away, and Mom even covered my eyes so I couldn't see."

Dad Sun looked at Sun Ye and saw that she was really curious, so he started to talk to her so that she wouldn't ask others blindly.

"That's someone from the Revolutionary Committee. He must have his reasons for pushing someone. Next time you see him, just stand aside."

Just gone? It's like nothing was said?

Sun Ye picked up a bamboo stick and swung it. Dad Sun grabbed it and said, "If you want to play with it, go play with it on the side. It's very sharp. If you cut your hand, it will hurt and make you bleed."

"oh."

Sun Ye moved a small stool to sit on, took off his cloth shoes, revealing his round, white jade toes, each one as cute as jade. He bent over the soles of his feet and found that there were blisters. There were six blisters in total on both feet.

"Hey, let's see if you want to go to town next time. Xiuzhen, get a needle and pick the blisters on Ye Zi. My feet are blistered."

Father Sun was reluctant to pry open his daughter's foot, as she was already half grown up, so he could only comfort her: "It will be healed in a few days, it won't hurt."

Sun Sen and Sun Lin also came over to look at the blisters on Sun Ye's feet, and then said that they had also had them and it didn't hurt at all. As they said this, they even took off their shoes to show Sun Ye where the blisters were.

"Brother, brother, I believe you have had blisters. Let's not take off our shoes, okay? No, don't take off your shoes." Sun Ye tried to stop him. Her brother's feet were beyond words. She didn't know how they got there, but there was a smell that made her feel sick.

After much persuasion, Sun Lin was finally persuaded not to take off his shoes, and Sun Ye breathed a sigh of relief.

"Move aside, move aside."

Sun's mother came over with a needle, lifted Sun Ye's feet, pricked the blisters one by one, squeezed out the water inside, and told Sun Ye not to move for a few days.

It must be said that it really didn't hurt. Sun Ye didn't feel a thing and it was over. This is too much of a joke. It's a pity that it grew so big.

Sun Ye put his feet loosely on his shoes and tilted his head to watch his father split bamboo strips.

Grandma Sun was flipping through a sieve of beans. There were a lot of them in the field, and they would be eaten after drying them.

"These beans will be good to keep after being dried for two or three days."

Sun Ye listened to this, looked up at the sky, and said, "We can't dry it tomorrow. It will rain tomorrow."

"Why is it raining? The weather is fine. Look at the sky full of rosy clouds. It must be a beautiful day."

If there is morning glow, don't go out; if there is evening glow, travel a thousand miles. This means tomorrow will be a good day.

Sun Ye did not argue. Tomorrow we will know who is right. The beans cannot be dried in the sun.

Sun's mother didn't take it seriously and forgot about it after hearing it.
