Chapter 38 Turning over the sweet potato vines

"Of course. My teacher told me that personally, so how could it be false?"

Sun Ye raised her head arrogantly. Only in front of her mother did she still act like a little girl.

Seeing this, Sun's mother reached out and gently scratched Sun Ye's nose, praising him: "Our Ye Zi is very smart!"

"Go to the main room and rest. It's very sunny outside. Be careful not to get a sunburn."

Sun Ye wanted to say that the sun wouldn't tan him, it was just natural, but in the end he followed his mother's wishes and made the main room cooler.

"Leaf, come and light the fire!"

Sun Ye had only been cooling off in the main room for less than ten minutes when his mother called him again, so he had no choice but to get up. Burning a fire in the middle of summer was the most uncomfortable thing, it was so hot and scorching.

Sun Ye placed the small stool far away from the stove and casually threw a few pieces of firewood in. He was sweating profusely and thought, it doesn't need to be watched all the time, so he went to the door to get some fresh air.

During the meal, Sun Ma and Sun Ye's clothes were soaked. The dishes were all cold. It was so hot that Sun Ye had no appetite, so he took a few bites and didn't want to eat anymore.

As for the seaweed that Sun Ye brought back, it was locked in the cabinet by Sun's mother. It was a decent thing to entertain guests, so how could it cause trouble now?

"Ye Zi, if you have nothing to do this afternoon, come with me to dig up the sweet potato vines."

While eating, Mother Sun said that her job today was to go to the south hillside to turn over vines and pick some sweet potato tips to stir-fry and make a delicious dish.

Sun Ye looked up, thought about it, and nodded in agreement.

Sun Sen is now in high school and lives in the school. He comes back once every ten days or half a month. As for Sun Lin, he is in the second grade of junior high school and also lives in the school. The town is too far away from here, and it takes two or three hours to walk. The team does not have ox carts to go back and forth to the town every day, so they just live in the school together so that they can take care of each other.

Now, only Sun's father, Sun's mother, and Sun Ye are at home, and the meals are much simpler.

Dad Sun is going to repair the road. Now the road is only wide enough for a bullock cart to pass by shakily. The team wants to widen and repair it so that they can buy a tractor next year and have a road to travel on.

The sun was not so strong in the afternoon, so Sun's mother and Sun Ye got ready and set off.

A teapot of water is a must. Sun Ye also wears a straw hat woven by his father for sun protection. His mother forced him to wear long-sleeved clothes. He is fully armed.

Mother Sun closed the gate, and the mother and daughter set off together.

When they arrived at their destination, a large patch of lush green sweet potato vines was particularly pleasing to the eye. There was not a trace of wind in the air, and it was hot. Sun Ye felt much better just looking at the vines.

Mother Sun put the teapot in a cool place and greeted the ladies standing by the field.

"Auntie Li, you're here quite early."

"Just arrived too."

"Hey, this is Ye Zi, come quickly, let me take a look."

Sun Ye followed behind her mother. What she feared most was seeing these aunties and grandmas, who would catch her and scold her.

Mother Sun turned sideways, completely revealing Sun Ye behind her. Sun Ye stepped forward with a standard smile on his face.

"Hello, Auntie!"

Sun Ye could almost feel the difficulty and stiffness of these words, which were completely devoid of emotion.

Aunt Li raised her hand and touched the straw hat Sun Ye was wearing, originally wanting to touch his head.

He lowered his head and took a closer look at Sun Ye's appearance, and exclaimed in admiration: "Ye Zi's mother, this is your child!"

As he spoke, he gave a thumbs up and said, "Look at her glowing white skin, and her small face and small mouth. How come she looks so good?"

Sun Ye has become accustomed to it. Everyone who comes will compliment her on her looks, so she just lowers her head and pretends to be shy and doesn't say anything.

When Sun's mother heard this, she smiled and said, "Maybe it's up to me!"

Aunt Li nodded and said that it was possible. Xiuzhen was pretty when she was young, so it was natural for her child to be good-looking.

"Aren't we supposed to go to school today? Why didn't Ye Zi go to school?"

"Hey, isn't Ye Zi graduating? She just went to get her exam papers this morning."

"Graduation? Ye Zi has finished elementary school?"

Mother Sun nodded and said, "That's right. It seems like Ye Zi was so small and just went to school with her bag on her back yesterday."

Seeing that there was nothing for her to do, Sun Ye found a place out of the sun and sat down to watch her mother and the others chatting.

Really, Sun Ye doesn’t like chatting, but she likes listening to others chatting. It’s very interesting, and she listens with great interest.

"Then do you want to go to junior high school? Ye Zi is still so young, can you bear it?"

Aunt Li asked this question politely. Not everyone can afford to go to school these days. There are many people who cannot even read a single word, let alone get into junior high school.

"Ye Zi got into junior high school and scored 100 percent. All the answers on the test were correct. The teacher said there were only a handful of people in the whole town who got more than that."

"That's incredible! This kid is so smart! So smart!"

Mother Sun couldn't stop smiling. Praising her child made her happier than praising herself.

But he still said with a little reserve: "No, it's just so-so. Maybe it's just luck, luck!"

“…”

This is too hypocritical. Sun Ye finally understood why her mother asked her to turn over the sweet potato vines. If she didn't come, the show would not start well.

"Nonsense, why don't you let others try it too? How can someone who scored zero points not get one?"

"Ye Zi will also be going to junior high school in September. Your family has three junior high school students in one family. Incredible, incredible!"

"This is all thanks to the children's own efforts. As parents, we can only do our best to support them."

Aunt Li also nodded. Three junior high school students, the reputation sounds good, but the money and food are pouring out like water, which is very stressful.

The captain's gong sounded, and the captain's voice could be heard from afar: "Work begins! Work begins!"

Sun Ye stood up, dusted off his butt, and started working on the ridge of field next to Sun Ma.

It takes strength to turn over the sweet potato vines. Sun Ye doesn't have much, but she has plenty of strength, so she's finally put to good use.

Sun Ye didn't want to stand out too much, so she lagged behind her mother by two or three meters. Seeing that Sun Ye knew what was going on, her mother didn't remind her to slow down.

Family members know their own business. If Ye Zi goes all out, she won't be able to defeat her own daughter.

The sweet potato vines are intertwined and crisscrossed, making it difficult to sort them out. Some of them are tender and redundant, so they are picked off and put in the apron pockets in front of them. The team doesn't care about these things at this time, as long as the work is done well.

Seeing that everyone around her was bent over working and no one was paying attention to her, Sun Ye relaxed her thoughts. She hadn't communicated with them for a long time.

"Hello."

"Hello, hello."

"I'm Sun Ye, are you guys okay here?"

"It's a great place with plenty of sunshine. We can have lots of sons. They'll be big and sweet in a while. Come over and I'll show you."

Pregnant?

Sun Ye choked. What kind of new word is this? Why does it sound so unpleasant?

"That's right, my hair has grown too long, and it's taking away a lot of nutrients that should belong to my son. The same goes for my other hair. They're all tangled together and pulling at me, giving me a headache."

"You still have a head?"

Sun Ye was really surprised that the sweet potato had a head. She looked left and right but couldn't figure out where the head was.

"Of course, my head is right there at the root. I'll touch it for you. I'm not lying."

It was obvious that Little Red Potato was a little unhappy about being suspected by Sun Ye, so Sun Ye quickly said, "I just didn't think of it for a moment, please don't be angry, okay?"

"Okay, you're not very knowledgeable. I forgive you."

This sweet potato vine is quite proud.

"I like you so much, can I call you my sweetheart?"

Sun Ye almost choked on his own saliva. It was really incongruous for such a childish voice to say such words. And the word "darling" was also used. Thinking of this word, Sun Ye's heart trembled.

She squatted down and said in her mind, "Little Teng Teng, who taught you to say 'my dearest baby'? You can't say that carelessly."

"Yes, one night, two bipeds like you came next to me. They hugged each other, ate the water in each other's mouths, and then rolled on me, breaking several strands of my hair..."

“Stop! Stop!”

Sun Ye said that her ears were dirty and the land in front of her was a bit unbearable to look at.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing, nothing, it's just too sudden."

"I heard a Twoleg call another Twoleg darling, and the other Twoleg was very happy. I thought you would be the same."

“………”

"Just call me Ye Zi."

"Leaf? That's what you Twolegs call my hair?"

"Well, yes."

"Then I have lots and lots of leaves. I'm so happy!"

Sun Ye couldn't laugh. Who would have thought that he could eat a melon by talking to them? I don't know who it is.

She doesn't have much curiosity, and she is not keen on love between men and women, nor does she quite understand it.

"Ye Zi, are you tired? If you are tired, go and take a rest."

Seeing that Sun Ye had been staying there for a long time without moving, Sun's mother thought that Sun Ye was not good at turning over the sweet potato vines and was tired.

Sun Ye was stunned for a moment before she realized that it was her mother who was talking to her. She replied, "I'm not tired. I just saw a grasshopper on this leaf. It was quite big. I looked at it for a while."

"Grasshopper? Where?"

When Mother Sun heard this, she hurried back. There were grasshoppers in the sweet potato field. They were delicious if you caught them and roasted them. But she was unlucky and didn't encounter any.

"Do you know where there are grasshoppers? Little sweet potato."

Sun Ye panicked, and she made up an excuse to fool her mother. It seems that it is better not to lie. If something goes wrong, she will be at a loss and embarrassed.

So I asked the little sweet potato, it knows best where the grasshoppers are in its territory.

"You mean the springtails in my hair? There's a couple to your left, and they're mating."

After hearing this, Sun Ye looked over and saw that there was indeed a pair, one stacked on top of the other.

"leaf."

"Look there, Mom. It's on those two vines, under the leaves over there."

Sun Ye pointed directly at the two green grasshoppers. Mother Sun tilted her head to look over and said, "Hey, it's true, but the action is a little inappropriate for children."

Mother Sun took a step forward from a distance, walked over, grabbed it, tied it with a few weeds, and put it in her pocket.

"Leaf, keep going. If you find another grasshopper, call Mom and I'll catch them. Grasshoppers' hind legs can really scratch you. I'll roast them up and give them to you when I get home."

Sun Ye was silent. She said she didn't want to eat grasshoppers, especially the two she had just caught.

Mother Sun caught the grasshopper and returned to her own row of sweet potatoes. Sun Ye quietly thanked the little sweet potatoes.

She continued to turn over the sweet potato vines, and it took her the whole afternoon. She stopped whenever Sun Ma stopped. She found four or five more behind the grasshopper. They were not small sweet potatoes, as she found them all.

After work, Sun Ye took a handful of sweet potato tips and walked home with her mother in the setting sun.

Tonight's dish is sweet potato tips, a plate of pickled vegetables, and a few roasted grasshoppers.

Everything smells really good, really good, she loves meat!
