Chapter 44: Defeat

Sun Ye was looking forward to it. When the bell for the end of work in the brigade rang, she fetched some water and put it aside, then ran directly to the gate of the yard and looked at the end of the road.

I put my hand on my forehead to block the glaring sunlight, and a few blurry figures appeared, but they were a little far away and couldn't be seen clearly.

Well, there are three people, so it’s not Sun’s mom and dad. I felt a little disappointed.

Sure enough, the three people took another fork in the road, and six more people appeared. Sun Ye regained hope, hoping that his mother and father were among them.

They were getting closer and closer. The six people were divided into two groups, one group of four and the other group of two. Sun Ye smiled because she saw her mother and father.

After waiting for so long, the person finally arrived. Sun Ye went to greet them and pushed them into the house quickly under the puzzled eyes of Sun's mother and father.

Sun Ye jumped out and said excitedly to the dishes on the stone table: "Dangdangdang, look, what is this!"

Bling Bling's big eyes blinked as she looked at her grandparents, her beautiful eyes full of joy and anticipation.

Grandma and Dad looked at each other, their cheek muscles twitching noticeably, and they were speechless for a moment.

"Isn't it a surprise? I can cook now. Come on, wash your hands and let's eat."

Sun Ye tried to save face by saying, "Mom, Dad, don't be fooled by the appearance, it actually tastes amazing. I guarantee you'll want to eat it again after the first one."

Sun Ye was cooking for the first time in his life and was quite skilled at it. He served the rice, placed the chopsticks, sat upright in his own seat, and watched his mother and father wash their faces and hands.

Dad Sun shook off the water droplets on his hands, made up his mind, and thought to himself: This is my daughter's first time cooking. No matter what, I should praise her to death so as not to discourage her enthusiasm.

Sun's mother had almost the same thought. The two of them sat down, with their chopsticks stretched out but nowhere to put them.

Sun Ye nodded and let them eat. Dad Sun really didn't dare to eat the plate of fried cabbage. The cold cucumber looked fine, so he quickly picked up the cucumber before Mom Sun.

When he put it in his mouth, the taste made Dad Sun's eyes widen immediately. He held it in his mouth without chewing it. He was afraid that he would choke on it if he took a bite.

Sun Ye said from the side: "Dad, isn't it so fragrant that it is hard to find in the world?"

It's so choking!

Father Sun added inwardly, but looking at Ye Zi's big eyes, he said unwillingly, "Well, this cucumber is crisp in the mouth and has a sweet taste. The more you eat, the more you want to eat. It's unique in the world. Wait until I have a few bites of rice before commenting on it."

Sun Ye was satisfied and looked at his mother, who was feeling very uncomfortable. Sun Ye pointed at the burnt cabbage and said, "Mom, try this dish and see if it's up to your standard."

Mother Sun closed her eyes and reached for the plate of stir-fried cabbage with trembling hands. Her mouth was full of burnt taste, and she chewed it quickly and swallowed it in one gulp.

"Ye Zi, don't cook anymore from now on. Mom will do it."

"Mom, is it not tasty?"

"It's delicious, of course it's delicious."

Mother Sun forced a smile. She put too much oil in the stir-fried cabbage, enough for her to cook for four or five days. For the sake of the oil, it had to taste good.

"I'm just worried that Ye Zi will get tired. Cooking is so hard. Just let Ye Zi cook."

Sun Ye touched his index fingers together and said softly, "Mom, don't force it. You can tell me the truth."

With Sun Ye's intelligence, how could she not see that Sun's father and mother were insincere? She wanted to hear real feedback. She really couldn't taste whether the food she cooked was good or not, her taste buds were not working.

"Really? Ye Zi, don't be angry."

Sun Ye nodded, she wouldn't be angry.

Mother Sun breathed a sigh of relief, thinking of her words, and then, under Sun Ye's gaze, she began, "Look at what you've fried. How much oil did you put in? You don't know how expensive firewood and rice are, so you're just being reckless. But look at it, it's burnt. What a waste of good food you've made. Pigs wouldn't eat it. We're afraid of hurting you, so we're praising you against our will. How dare you bear it?"

"You're so old, but you can't even cook. Look around the village and see if there's any girl like you. Let's not talk about anything else, just Miaomiao. Although she's a little playful and noisy, she's the boss at home and outside, doing her job beautifully. She's saved your Fourth Aunt a lot of worry. And look at you..."

Sun's mother became more and more excited as she spoke. Seeing that Sun Ye looked unhappy, Sun's father quietly pulled Sun's mother's sleeve under the table and asked her to slow down.

Sun's mother changed the subject, "Of course, Ye Zi still has her strengths. She knows how to care for her parents and helps them whenever she can. Best of all, she's smart, and her grades are better than anyone else can catch up with."

"Yes, yes, yes, Ye Zi is very smart and good at studying." Dad Sun agreed.

It turns out that she is really good for nothing except studying, and it seems to be true.

Sun Ye suppressed the sadness in his heart and smiled, but the smile was as ugly as it could be.

"Mom and Dad, I will change in the future. Let's eat first."

"Ye Zi, your mother is straightforward and speaks without thinking. We forget what we hear."

"Come on, come on, eat, eat."

Sun Ye ate his food calmly, appearing to be completely normal, as if he wasn't affected at all by his mother's words.

But only Sun Ye knew how frustrated she was. No matter how greasy or salty the food was, she didn't notice it at all. She just ate numbly, not wanting her parents to see that she was unhappy.

After dinner, Sun's mother cleaned up and washed the dishes. Sun Ye returned to his room lightly, and no one noticed that he was walking with his hands and feet unsteady.

Father Sun squatted beside Mother Sun and said, "You were a little harsh just now. Look at Ye Zi, she's quite distracted."

Father Sun made a gesture with his index finger and thumb, sounding a little worried. Mother Sun, on the other hand, said nonchalantly, "Don't worry, Ye Zi will be full of energy in no time. Don't you think about how old Ye Zi is? She's twelve years old, and she can't even cook. Who would believe it if I told anyone else?"

"When we're at home, we spoil her and don't let her do anything, but she has to learn how to do it. We can't support her forever. She might marry into another family in the future..."

………

Sun Ye sat on the bed blankly, her heart was in a mess at this moment.

It seemed like she really had never done anything for the family. There were no pigs at home, so she didn't need to cut grass for the pigs. If there were chickens, it was Sun's mother who cleaned the house. She only fed the chickens a few times when she was in a good mood, but she never did anything serious.

Her only job was to make fire. She was like a spoiled young lady, with nothing to lose and nothing to lose.

I raised my hand and took a closer look. It was delicate, white and tender, a far cry from my parents' rough hands.

How could she not see her parents' hard work and take their efforts for granted? She had never done anything for her parents, but today she just cooked an inedible meal and was complacent, thinking she was so sensible and filial.

Thinking back on the past twelve years of her life, she couldn't help but shed tears. What was covering her eyes that made her so absurd and mysterious?

Sun's mother woke me up early.

"Ye Zi, take a nap early and go to work in the fields with Mom this afternoon. Don't just lie around at home doing nothing."

Sun Ye woke up from his self-blame when his mother's voice came from outside the window. He quickly replied, "I know. I'll go to sleep now."

The thick cry in her voice could not be concealed. Sun Ye blew her nose and wiped it with a handkerchief. Only then did she realize that she was crying. It was the first time she cried, except when she was born.

Touching the cold tear marks on her face, she felt a little bit unbelievable, yet it seemed natural that she would cry.

The high priest used to never shed a tear, but now he is in tears. She should be happy.

After wiping away his tears, Sun Ye went to bed for a nap. Now that he knew his shortcomings, he would try his best to correct them. Don't think too much. The most important thing is to do well in the present matter.

In the afternoon, Sun's mother took Sun Ye to the cornfield to weed and cover the corn roots with a layer of soil. Sun Ye was in the front pulling weeds, and Sun's mother was behind covering the soil.

This cornfield is not a place for people to work in. The corn leaves always cut people, the corn silk falls on the neck and makes it itchy, the sun is strong, and the field is scorching hot, making it so stuffy that people can't breathe.

Sun Ye bent down and pulled out the weeds with all her strength. She had to work quickly. Sun's mother was so angry that she was determined to make her work. She didn't slack off at all and kept chasing her.

The corn is covered with two layers of soil. After this layer, it is not covered again and allowed to grow. Red beans are also planted in the cornfield. Sun Ye pays special attention when pulling out weeds, for fear of accidentally pulling out the red bean seedlings while mistaking them for weeds.

Really, Sun Ye was exhausted after working for just an hour. His speed dropped sharply. His hands were covered with dirt and weed juice, and even the cracks between his nails were covered with a black layer.

Seeing Sun Ye's appearance, Sun's mother felt sorry for her and canceled her plan to let her work for an afternoon to experience the difficulties and intensity of adult work.

He put down the hoe, walked over to Sun Ye, took his hand, and dragged Sun Ye to the edge of the field to rest. Sun Ye didn't care about anything else and sat down, lying on the ground motionless.

At this moment, Sun Ye felt that there was nothing more comfortable than lying down. She was willing to lie there until the end of time and never leave.

Thinking about how her grandparents lived like this every day, day after day, year after year, with no end in sight, she felt genuinely sad.

"Ye Zi, come, get up and drink some water to moisten your throat."

Sun's mother pulled Sun Ye up and handed him a glass of boiled water. Sun Ye didn't even have the strength to speak at this moment, so he could only take the water and drink it in one gulp.

"Ye Zi, take a rest first. Come back after you've rested."

After giving these instructions, Mother Sun turned around and went into the cornfield to weed and cover the cornfield with soil.

Sun Ye sat up and looked at her mother's bent figure. Her nose felt sore and she couldn't cry. She looked up at the blue sky. The sun was so bright in the clear sky that it made her tears come out, passing through her ears and wetting her hair.

At this moment, Sun Ye truly understood the hard work of his parents and also understood why the teacher was so excited.

Sun Ye does not have such noble sentiments. At this moment, she just wants her mom and dad not to be so tired.

After a short rest, Sun Ye joined the weeding work again. She must not fall behind today.

When Sun Ye got off work and went home, all he saw was green, his mind was full of green grass, and he walked unsteadily.

After a quick meal, Sun Ye slept soundly that night.
