Chapter 49: Working at Night

Sun Ye sat on the edge of the field, feeling very anxious. Without caring about anything else, she got up and ran towards the team leader. She had to go and see what was going on in person to feel at ease.

When Sun Ye ran to the captain's side, he found that Old Lady Sun had just arrived. Sun Ye followed behind Old Lady Sun, and all three of them were panting.

Mother Sun pulled Sun Ye over, gave her a look, telling her not to interrupt, and then followed the steps of Mother Sun.

"Auntie, what's going on?"

When Lin Guodong saw the three people standing in front of him, he was out of breath and asked the scorer to stop and ask if there was anything urgent.

"Captain, this is urgent! I heard it's going to rain tomorrow, really hard. If it starts, the crops in the fields will be drowned, and there'll be nothing left..."

Old Lady Sun spoke out the most important things in one breath, and then continued, "Captain, we can't rest tonight. We have to hurry up and harvest as much as we can..."

Yang Guodong and the scorekeeper exchanged a bewildered glance, yet they also realized the seriousness of the situation. So, he asked, "Auntie, where did you get this information? Is it accurate? This is no joke."

"Oh, I'm an old woman, can I lie to you? This news is true. It will rain at one o'clock tomorrow. Hurry up and get everyone to work. Don't waste time."

Old Mrs. Sun stamped her feet anxiously, gesturing with her hands, "Captain, I swear to God, if I lie, I will..."

"Auntie, bah, bah, bah, this is not popular."

Yang Guodong hurriedly stopped Old Lady Sun from swearing, and looking at the three people who were staring at him intently, he suddenly felt the pressure increase. He pulled the scorer over and went to the side to discuss something with him.

"Mom, will the captain believe what grandma said?"

Sun Ye asked in a low voice. Although she could hear the conversation over there, the team leader would rather believe it than not, but the scorer was different. He didn't believe it at all. The two were arguing.

"Yes, the captain is a good captain, he will."

Mother Sun didn’t know whether she was comforting herself or answering unconsciously.

Old Lady Sun glanced at Sun Ye and asked very seriously, "Ye Zi, you have to watch carefully. Grandma is risking her life, so don't make any mistakes."

Sun Ye looked up at the stars in the night sky and nodded affirmatively. The constellations above were very clear and there was no way he could be wrong.

"Alas, if it doesn't rain, I would be happy to sacrifice my old face." Old Mrs. Sun sighed. If God doesn't give her food to eat, she will be busy all year round. If there is nothing to harvest, it will really be the end of her life. The whole family will have to go hungry. The feeling makes her feel uncomfortable just thinking about it.

"Third son's wife, if the team leader doesn't agree, our family will work overnight. At least a little bit is good." Old Mrs. Sun was silent for a moment. She heard the heated debate on the team leader's side and made the final plan. She couldn't control others, so she could only let her family work hard.

"Yeah." Mother Sun nodded repeatedly.

Sun Ye looked up at the sky, wondering why it was so difficult.

The argument between the two men over there hadn't ended when the scorekeeper yelled, "Captain, you can't do this! If it doesn't rain tomorrow, everyone will blame you. You might even have someone else do the job. This is dereliction of duty!"

"Complain if you want, replace if you want, I have a clear conscience!"

The team leader replied, strode towards Old Lady Sun and the others, nodded at them, solemnly struck the gong, and headed towards the threshing ground.

This is the sound of assembly.

"Everyone, young or old, assemble!"

The captain shouted loudly.

Sun Ye smiled. It was really great that their team had such a captain. The scorer dragged his feet to catch up, and Sun Ye and the other two also followed.

The people sitting on the edge of the field were confused by the sound of the gong, but they got up and went to the threshing ground.

Those who were walking home also turned back and headed towards the threshing ground.

All the scattered members of the advancing brigade moved towards one location.

Sun Ye watched as more and more people joined this path, and he felt inexplicably moved. He couldn't explain why, but his nose just felt a little sore.

"Everyone, I've got accurate information. There will be a heavy rainstorm tomorrow at one o'clock. Tonight we have to fight a race against time to harvest all the grain we've worked so hard to grow back into the granary. Do you have the confidence to do it?"

The captain shouted at the top of his lungs when he said the last sentence.

There was silence below, and the villagers looked at each other, but no one responded for a moment.

Sun's mother pulled Sun's father, and Sun's father reacted and immediately shouted back: "Yes!"

The Sun family members all responded in unison. One person answered, and the others all responded, "Yes."

Then the scorer standing in front called out, "Yes!"

The noise was so sparse that it was deafening. The team leader nodded and smiled. Everyone picked up their farm tools and headed towards the fields and mountains. There were people everywhere.

The women would go home and prepare some food to feed their family members working in the fields, and then join the harvesting team.

Sun Ye paid special attention to the team leader and found that after the team leader announced the news, he borrowed a bicycle from someone at the educated youth point and rode out of the Qianjin Brigade. Later, Sun Ye learned that the team leader had gone to deliver the news to other teams, but few teams took it seriously. Only the familiar teams reluctantly worked at night for the sake of friendship.

Sun Ye was still cutting the same piece she had cut during the day. Although her eyes were soaked with sweat, her clothes were sticking to her body, her waist could not be straightened, and her hands were shaking from waving, she did not want to stop, nor did she dare to stop, for fear that she would be a drag.

The kids younger than her were drowsy but still persisted. She couldn't fall down before these kids.

Besides, the adults work harder than her, but none of them complain of being tired.

As Sun Ye was mowing, he seemed to hear singing. The singing became louder and louder, and it was heard by both men and women, echoing throughout the advancing team.

"...He works for the happiness of the people. He is the people's savior..."

Sun Ma from this field also started to sing loudly. At first, Sun Ye just stammered along, but later he unconsciously opened his voice and sang with everyone.

The singing seemed to heal all the pain and fatigue, and work became easier.

The songs changed one after another, and the night gradually deepened. Under the light of the moon and stars, everyone was busy and energetic. From time to time, a night breeze blew away the heat accumulated during the day.

Those who worked quickly finished their share, the scorekeeper recorded their work points, and then they found another piece of land to speed up the harvest.

That night, Sun Ye and his mother exchanged five or six pieces of land, not to mention that the men like Sun's father exchanged even more.

The scorekeeper ran from one field to another, circling the entire advancing team at least three or four times.

The rooster crowed, and daybreak was approaching.

When Sun Ye heard the rooster crowing, his heart tightened and his hands moved faster. It seemed that everyone had this sense of urgency. The only sound in the field was the sound of sickles cutting rice.

Some children could not bear it any longer and fell asleep in the fields, but when they heard the roosters crowed, they got up and continued working.

The sky was getting brighter and brighter, but it was gloomy, with large patches of clouds floating in the sky, making it so oppressive that it was hard to breathe.

The team leader ran and shouted, "Pull up!" and soon they would finish the collection.

Sun Ye has been listening since the second half of the night until now. This is really too long, so long that Sun Ye can hardly bear it.

In fact, there is still a lot of rice growing in the soil waiting to be harvested. It is unrealistic to store all the grain in the granary in one night. We can only harvest the most important rice first and collect as much as we can.

Time passed minute by minute, and before Sun Ye could react, her head was hit by the falling rain. She paused and swung the sickle in her hand even more frantically.

"Work faster! Faster!"

The captain was shouting into a loudspeaker, his voice was hoarse, but it did not affect him at all as he continued to shout and be with everyone.

The thunder and rain grew louder, the sky darkened, and lightning flashed through it. The team leader looked up from time to time to check the progress of the fields. The situation was serious, and there was still a lot of unharvested...

The rain was getting heavier and heavier. The people in the fields stopped working. Some people just sat down in the mud without caring about anything. Sun Ye struggled to stand up and straightened his back. Only those who have experienced it know how sour and refreshing it feels.

After giving the sickle to Sun's mother, he limped home. No one spoke on the way. His two brothers followed Sun Ye silently in the same posture.

When they got home, all three of them breathed a sigh of relief. They had never felt that the journey was so long. They took shelter under the eaves. Sun Ye dragged a small stool, sat on it, and lowered his head.

At this moment, her mind was empty and she had no energy to do anything. She just wanted to fall asleep and sleep soundly.

The three siblings sat there for more than ten minutes. Sun Ye cheered up and went to the kitchen to light a fire and boil water, making a pot of ginger soup to drive away the cold and prevent them from catching a cold.

When cooking, I also picked some Chinese cabbage from the field and added it in to replenish the body.

I boiled another big pot of water and prepared to take a hot bath for the whole family.

When Mr. and Mrs. Sun came back, they drank some ginger soup and took a bath. Mrs. Sun made some food to fill her stomach, and then they went back to their rooms to sleep.

Sun Ye fell asleep as soon as he hit the bed and even started snoring. It was obvious that he was very tired. The dark circles under his eyes were scary. The whole family, no, the whole village was the same.

The Forward Brigade fell asleep, and there was a storm outside. Only the brigade leader and the scorekeeper were left looking at the rain outside with worries.

Although she slept soundly, her mind was preoccupied and she could not sleep peacefully. Sun Ye woke up in less than three or four hours. She opened the door and saw that it was raining heavily outside. The door to the main room was open, and Sun's father and mother were sitting there, watching the rain outside.

"Ye Zi, wake up." Grandma Sun called out.

Sun Ye went over and sat on the bench, holding his cheeks and looking at the rain.

"Ye Zi, how long do you think this rain will last?" I was in a hurry yesterday and forgot to ask this question.

"It will probably stop at 6:00 tomorrow morning." Sun Ye already had the answer in his mind.

"Ah? It's still raining at night?"

"Well, it's about the same size now. It will slowly get darker by morning."

Sun Ye's mother's questions and answers confused Sun's father, who said, "You are confused. Asking Ye Zi about this matter will not count."

Sun Ye's mother looked at Sun's father, neither of them saying a word. Then they turned to look at the heavy rain outside the house.

"Third brother! Third brother! Open the door!"

It was the voice of Old Lady Sun.
