Chapter 53: Making Rice Cakes

The days after slaughtering the New Year pig passed very quickly. It seemed like in the blink of an eye, it was New Year's Eve.

The house inside and out was cleaned very neatly. It wasn't spotless, but it was much brighter than usual.

Early in the morning, Sun's mother started to get busy. They had to go to the old house for dinner tonight, but she couldn't go empty-handed. She had to at least bring a few dishes that were presentable.

The disturbing rooster was still patrolling its territory in a magical manner. Sun Ye knew that he would kill it and eat it today, so he ran to see it early in the morning.

Seeing that the rooster was still unconscious, Sun Ye felt anxious for it. He opened the bamboo door of the chicken coop, and several chickens started to frighten and flutter.

Sun Ye held a handful of cornmeal in his hand, bent down, and called out "Ku ...

I looked at the hesitant rooster with sincere eyes. It was about to die, so I gave it something good to eat as a last meal to complete their fate.

If the chicken knew what Sun Ye was thinking, it would definitely jump up and curse to let Sun Ye know how powerful its iron beak was.

The big rooster walked over slowly, and seeing that Sun Ye still didn't move, he thought he was an acquaintance after all, so he lowered his head and pecked at the corn crumbs in Sun Ye's hand.

Sun Ye slowly stretched out his other hand and gently stroked the rooster's back, causing the rooster to look up at Sun Ye, as if asking: What are you doing? Don't disturb me while I'm eating.

The little eyes were particularly bright and lively. Sun Ye suddenly had an idea. Could we not kill the chicken today? This chicken had been at home for so long, and she had developed a close relationship with it. It would be a bit inappropriate to just kill it and eat it.

Sun Ye probably forgot that she felt the same way when she saw a pig being slaughtered, but it didn't stop her from liking to eat meat.

Sun Ye threw the cornmeal on the ground and stood up to discuss with her mother and the others whether it would be feasible. She couldn't bear to eat the rooster meat. Although she always imagined how delicious the rooster meat was, she backed down when the time came.

Sun Ma was steaming glutinous rice and hadn't yet started to kill the chicken. Sun Ye walked over to the stove and watched Sun Ma busying around. He hesitated for a long time before speaking:

"Mom, can you please not kill the rooster today? We don't lack meat at home."

There is no shortage of meat. The meat of the pig slaughtered during the New Year is still in the cabinet. It has been cured and marinated, just waiting to be fried and eaten.

"Why, you can't bear to leave?"

Sun Ye nodded and said coyly, "The big rooster is good. He wakes us up every day, looks after the other chickens, and protects the hens. Most importantly, he helps the hens lay eggs. If we kill him, the hens won't be able to lay eggs, which would be a huge loss."

Sun Ye tried hard to think about the benefits of a big rooster and tried to convince his mother. After all, if he could convince his mother, he would be halfway to success.

"It's okay not to kill. You have to convince others, then they won't kill you."

Sun Ye was so happy after hearing this that he went out to look for other people. His father Sun was washing the stone mortar in the yard at this time. He hadn't taken it out for a whole year and it was covered with dust.

Sun Sen and Sun Lin were also watching at this moment, after all, they would also have to help make the rice cakes later.

"Dad, big brother, second brother, let me tell you something."

Three pairs of eyes turned to Sun Ye, clearly asking what was going on. Sun Ye calmed down and said calmly, "We won't kill the chicken. Mom and I have reached an agreement. Now I want to ask for your opinions."

There should be no problem with the advance payment. She also understands what Sun's mother means. This is not to increase the persuasiveness.

The three of them looked at each other and shook their heads. Since their mother/daughter-in-law agreed, there was nothing more to say. If they didn't want to kill it, then they wouldn't kill it. It would be the same to keep it for later consumption.

Seeing this, Sun Ye secretly made a gesture in her heart. This is the importance of rhetoric. Although she did not use Sun Ma as a banner, she would still have a high probability of success, it would just require a little effort in talking.

He quickly ran back to the kitchen and excitedly said to Sun's mother, "Mom, my dad and the others agreed not to kill the rooster!"

Mother Sun looked at Sun Ye meaningfully, nodded, and said nothing more. She had just heard what Sun Ye said.

As if he had done something great, Sun Ye strode towards the chicken coop in the backyard with a proud and confident look. He climbed onto the coop and boasted to the big rooster that didn't understand human language:

"Big rooster, you don't have to go to hell today. You have to thank me. Be good in the future and lay more eggs, so that all my efforts will not be in vain..."

A man was talking to the chickens for a long time, and then Sun Ma's voice came from the yard, "It's time to make rice cakes!"

Sun Ye waved goodbye to the big rooster, and went to watch his father and the others making rice cakes with his hands behind his back.

Sun's mother poured the steamed glutinous rice into the stone mortar. Sun's father and Sun Sen each took a wooden mallet. After Sun's mother poured the rice, they aimed at the glutinous rice and started smashing it.

I have to say that this glutinous rice is very sticky. Once you hit it with a hammer, you can't pick it up for a long time and have to pull out long threads.

The air was filled with the fragrance of glutinous rice. Sun Ye took a deep breath. The air entering his lungs was so fragrant. Sun Ye took a few more deep breaths quietly, feeling very satisfied.

Sun Ye saw that his father and the others were fighting so hard that they were getting hot. Their clothes were open, their foreheads were sweating, and there was heat coming off their bodies.

"Stop, stop, let me rest first."

The eldest brother Sun Sen was panting and waving his hands constantly. This thing was too strenuous. He handed the mallet to Sun Lin, found a bench to sit down and took a deep breath.

Sun Lin took the hammer and danced with it, feeling speechless about his elder brother's early defeat. He rolled up his sleeves and started smashing it.

Sun Ye's eyes were jealous and her heart was itching. She also wanted to make rice cakes, so she quietly rubbed against Sun's father and poked his elbow with her fingers.

Father Sun looked back at Sun Ye, took a breath and said, "Ye Zi, stand away. If I hit you without paying attention, it's no joke."

"Dad, I want to make rice cakes too."

"You? Making rice cakes?"

Dad Sun looked at Sun Ye suspiciously. The hammer was almost as tall as Sun Ye.

"Dad, please let me try."

"Okay."

Sun Ye raised his head towards Sun Lin and asked him to start beating the rice cake first. The two of them beat it one by one.

Father Sun was beside him and exclaimed in admiration: "I didn't expect Ye Zi to be so good at making rice cakes. You were wasted in previous years. You should have been the one to come."

"What nonsense are you talking about? The leaves are so small, how can I hit them?"

Mother Sun took a piece of wood and sprinkled it with Fuqiang flour, then came over to see how Sun Ye and the others were making the rice cakes.

"We'll have to fight for a while longer."

Sun Ye and Sun Lin took turns hitting each other. After all, Sun Ye was stronger than Sun Lin, and her blows were louder than Sun Lin's. To be honest, if Sun Ye hadn't controlled her strength, she would have smashed the mortar upside down. Of course, the mallet had to be able to support it.

Sun Lin was confused by Sun Ye's relaxed posture but the unusual sound he made while smashing the rice cake, so he smashed the rice cake with even greater force.

"Hey, Third Brother's family is still making rice cakes this year!"

Fourth uncle came to visit with two kids, Sun Miao and Sun He. Sun Miao ran to Sun Ye and watched him make rice cakes.

"Yeah, didn't we get half a bag of glutinous rice this year? I thought about making some rice cakes for the three siblings to try. We didn't have that in previous years."

The mortar made a series of clanging sounds. Fourth Uncle came over to take a look, patted Father Sun's shoulder, and said teasingly:

"Third brother, why did you let Ye Zi make rice cakes? Are you trying to be lazy?"

"Go to hell, you think I'm you, you idiot."

"Brother-in-law, come, come and sit down. The bench is here."

"Hey, Third Sister-in-law."

Fourth Uncle Sun was itching to try his hand at making rice cakes. His family hadn't made rice cakes this year, so he walked up to Sun Ye and said, "Ye Zi, you must be tired. Take a break. There's a bench over there. Fourth Uncle will give you a couple of poundings."

Sun Ye stopped when she heard that. She wasn't actually tired. She had only been fighting for a while and hadn't even broken into a sweat. She looked at Sun Lin sitting across from her.

My goodness, he's already sweating profusely. Is it really that hard? Sun Ye couldn't help but wonder.

Sun Ye handed the club to his fourth uncle and stood by to watch. Unexpectedly, Sun Lin couldn't hold on after only three rounds with his fourth uncle. He waved his hands and asked his father Sun to take over.

"Third brother, let's do this!"

"Ye Zi, go wash your hands. You'll need to knead the rice cakes later."

The rice cake was almost done. Mother Sun took out a piece of it and looked at it. After she was done, she stuffed it into Sun Ye's mouth.

A piece of delicious food fell from the sky, and of course Sun Ye opened his mouth to catch it. It tasted really good, chewy but not as sticky as it looked.

"Third aunt, I want to make rice cakes too." Sun Miao shouted.

"Okay, then go wash your hands."

Sun Miao followed the other kids who had won candy to wash their hands. Father Sun and his fourth uncle stirred the rice cakes, making them stick to the mallet, and then carried them to the wooden board.

Sun Ye and his mother peeled the rice cake off the mallet, their hands covered with flour. They tore off a piece of rice cake and coated it thoroughly with flour so that it would not stick to anything.

Sun Ye kneaded the rice cakes into round cakes with her hands. During the kneading process, she suddenly had an idea: rice cakes are just like clay, so she could knead them into other shapes.

Just do it as soon as you think of it. With the help of a pair of skillful hands, a little duck is soon out, and it looks vivid and lifelike.

"I want to make a little duck too!" Sun Miao made the promise after seeing Sun Ye's operation.

"Hey, if you want to play, just take this ball and play with it. Don't ruin my rice cakes."

The small piece of rice cake was quickly pinched into various small animals by Sun Ye and Sun Miao, making it difficult to eat.

However, Sun Miao's sculptures are rough after all, and they don't have the charm and resemblance of Sun Ye's. But all in all, he is still quite talented, right?

As soon as the little animal that Sun Ye had made came out of the oven, his mother ordered someone to bite off its head and eat it in one gulp.

Everyone present was given an animal equally. Sun Miao made one and let her eat it herself. Sun Ye was reluctant to eat it, but when she saw that everyone was eating it with gusto, she stopped hesitating and closed her eyes and ate the little rabbit in her hand.

After eating rice cakes, we have to prepare the dishes to be served at the old house tonight, and they can’t be too shabby.

Sun's mother planned to make two big dishes and send them over: one was fish head and tofu soup. The tofu was ground from soybeans a few days ago, and the fish was caught by Sun's father in the river by luck. The other dish was braised pork.

Sun Ye helped out, and his saliva kept being secreted during the process. He could even squint his eyes and enjoy the smell so much.

She also tasted it to see how it tasted, and could describe it in one word: delicious!

She has begun looking forward to this year's sumptuous New Year's Eve dinner.
