The next day, the group began a thorough search along the side of the house. The discovery of wild yams gave them a strange sense of courage.
I found some free time this morning and spent the whole time searching.
Upon reaching another mountain, the group was so exhausted that their clothes were soaked with sweat, and their legs were trembling.
"I can't take it anymore, I need to rest." Wang Xiaosi was already feeling breathless. He was just about to find an empty spot to sit down for a while.
"Ah! Oh—"
Wang Xiaosi jumped up in pain, feeling as if he had been pricked by a thorn in his buttocks.
"What's wrong?"
"No, nothing."
Just as they were about to check if there were any thorns, Gu Zhou's mother-in-law was attracted by the thorns on the ball of fur.
"Chestnuts!" Look, everyone!
They all watched excitedly as Wang San San used a sickle to pry open the chestnut shells. The plump, large chestnuts excited them again.
But when everyone looked around, there were no chestnut trees.
"Let's search together, two people at a time. The chestnut tree can't be far away."
"good."
"good……"
Ten minutes later, Li De indeed found four chestnut trees in the direction he had chosen!
These trees are located directly above where the chestnuts fell.
No wonder it slipped and fell there!
"San San, let's hurry up and knock down all the chestnuts. It's a little past three now. Let's get to work quickly, we should be able to finish today."
"good."
Two people were picking chestnuts, while Wang Xiaosi, Gu Zhou, and two old ladies were using something to crack the shells.
The group worked until 8 p.m. before finally finishing by lighting torches. Then they dragged the sacks home.
"I was so worried! Why did you take so long to come back!" Wang Nana and the others had been anxiously waiting at home when they finally saw them return. They quickly fetched water so the group could wash up and eat.
"Sis, we got four sacks of big chestnuts today! Hehehe, let's boil them and eat them tomorrow!"
"Alright, alright, I'll cook it tomorrow morning. You didn't eat anything since you weren't back at noon, did you?"
Several people shook their heads. To save money, they would only drink a sip of water when they were thirsty.
So everyone ate the yam and wild vegetable porridge especially well that evening.
...
D. Xing'an Mountains.
"Alright. Hurry up and finish the watermelon. Today, let's cut some reeds and dry them together."
The river in front of my house has completely dried up.
Several people, dressed in long sleeves and trousers, prepared to start cutting reeds. Many reed leaves had already turned yellow. Fengran picked up the broad-leaved reeds, plucked some fresh leaves, and prepared to wrap them into zongzi (sticky rice dumplings).
We don't know when it will get cold, so everyone is planning to dry some reeds while we're idle these days. They'll be good for keeping warm if the temperature drops.
While cutting reeds, I found some wild duck eggs, which looked intact, so I kept them.
If the reeds are particularly fresh, everyone will cut them down and prepare to throw them directly into the space for the small animals to eat.
The next day, everyone spent the whole day making meat dumplings with the soaked glutinous rice and marinated pork belly.
The pork belly, with its even ratio of fat to lean meat, was mixed with glutinous rice. At first, everyone struggled to wrap them properly, and they kept leaking. But they gradually got the hang of it.
The cooked rice dumplings have a wonderful fragrance.
They wrapped several hundred. Jixiang did over fifty by himself, and then the next morning at dawn he went to find reed leaves again, with Bai Lian and Li Luo following him. They brought back a sack full of leaves. The group spent another day wrapping, throwing them into a large pot to boil as they wrapped. After all, zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) take a relatively long time to cook.
I made a big pot of braised loach and eel with vermicelli for dinner. It was incredibly delicious.
The group, who thought they could live a peaceful life, were attacked by a horde of... monsters on an ordinary afternoon!
Giant octopuses, long-legged tuna, crabs with enormous pincers… and long-legged whales. Most terrifying of all was a gigantic shark with a deformed tail, moving towards their house like a snake!
Luckily, everyone was already outside, so they saw it beforehand!
"Thank you for taking the house!"
Feng Ran quickly took over the two rooms, and Qi Xie didn't hold them back.
Jixiang and Li Luo had already flashed into the space.
After Feng Ran finished cleaning the house, he saw that the monsters were less than a hundred meters away from the yard. He quickly threw a grenade hard towards the area where the monsters were concentrated.
At the same time, Qi Xie and Feng Nangui, who were strong, quickly threw grenades at the densely packed monsters.
"Bang! Smash!"
"Bang!"
"Bang! Bang! Crack! Crack!"
The group observed some of the monsters that had been blown away. They then drew their guns to engage in combat.
"Good heavens! These things finally climbed up!"
"There might be even more! Everyone be careful!"
"Okay! If we can't win, we'll run. We'll come back here to meet up when it's safe!"
"good!"
"no problem."
...
"Bang bang bang!"
"Bang! Bang!"
"Phew, this monster octopus is much easier to deal with." Feng Ran couldn't help but sigh inwardly.
Taking it a step further, and then even further, some of my culprits finally climbed to the gate of the yard.
The already haphazard fence was torn apart by the giant octopus with a single effort.
"Holy crap, that's huge!"
Many were killed in the explosion; the scene was filled with severed limbs and smoke.
The air quality is extremely poor!
Feng Ran, seemingly unconcerned, threw two more grenades. There was no other way; there were just too many monsters. One or two would be manageable, but how could they handle so many?!
"Bang!"
"Bang! Bang bang bang..."
Half an hour later, the group began to hide in the woods.
There was nothing we could do; we killed a lot of monsters, but it seemed like new monsters were constantly being brought forward.
The sheer number was astonishing, like we'd stumbled upon a den of underwater monsters!
Fortunately, these monsters are generally slow-moving, with only the long-legged ones being a little faster. But even they can't outrun them.
