Chapter 4 A Thrilling Moment: The Carriage Moves...

Chapter 4 A Thrilling Moment: The Carriage Moves...

The carriage drove into the snowstorm, its round wheels colliding with the road with a crisp rolling sound, and the black wheels rolling over the bluestone slabs, leaving a long trail.

The carriage was silent. The two sat on opposite sides, the small space divided in two as if by an invisible chasm. Shang Xu sat upright with his eyes downcast and his hands nervously clasped together. After what had just happened, he was no longer as afraid of her as he had been at first, but he still dared not be presumptuous in her presence.

In contrast to his tension, Yan Yize was completely relaxed, leaning back lazily, holding a book in one hand and drinking tea in the other, his gaze fixed on the book, turning with the pages, as if he were utterly alone.

Out of the corner of his eye, Shang Xu's gaze involuntarily fell upon her. The rising steam from the tea made her face somewhat indistinct, but it did not diminish her beauty. The mist added a touch of mystery to her appearance.

As he gazed at her, Shang Xu became lost in thought. Yan Yize was undoubtedly the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and this beautiful woman was now his wife. The thought made his heart race wildly.

Time seemed to stand still for a moment. Shang Xu heard his own irregular heartbeat, one beat after another, as violent as a drum and as booming as thunder. His breathing became heavier, and his whole body instantly became hot. He didn't know when a blush had crept up behind his ears.

"What's wrong?"

Yan Yize noticed his unusual behavior, put down his book, and scrutinized him closely with his long, narrow, upturned eyes.

Her clear voice was like a gentle breeze, dispelling the heat that had been coursing through Shang Xu's body. He snapped back to reality, his face flushed crimson, his head bowed even lower, his chaotic thoughts making him feel utterly ashamed to face her.

Shang Xu stared at his fingers, but what appeared before him was her face. His fingers curled slightly as he desperately suppressed the pounding in his heart and concealed his unease, pretending to be nonchalant as he said, "No... nothing."

"Hmm." Yan Yize responded lightly, not delving into it, but his gaze subtly swept over the tips of his bright red ears, and a question arose in his mind. It was winter, and although there was a charcoal fire burning in the carriage, it was not hot. Why was his body so red?

His ears were small and beautiful, and whether it was from the heat or something else, they were so red they looked like they could drip blood. His fair skin was tinged with pink, and his full earlobes were particularly alluring. A thought flashed through Yan Yize's mind: he would look absolutely gorgeous if he wore earrings.

She remembered that she had a pair of glass earrings in her storeroom, and her little heart began to stir. Yan Yize's gaze fell on her reddened earlobes, examining them carefully. After a few seconds, he felt a little regretful, because his earlobes were intact and there was no trace of ear piercing.

What a pity about those glass earrings.

Shang Xu sensed her gaze, and perhaps because of his earlier overthinking, he felt a burning sensation under her gaze. The heat that had just subsided on his face returned, even more intense than before.

After hesitating for a long time, Shang Xu couldn't help but raise his head. His slightly flushed cheeks resembled the most beautiful sunset on the horizon. Their eyes met unexpectedly, and for a moment, it felt as if a subtle electric current flowed through his body, causing his heart to skip a beat.

Shang Xu's breath hitched, and he turned his head away at lightning speed. His hand clenched and unclenched under his sleeve, and the feeling he had when they met eyes made his heart pound.

He bit his lip and asked, "Your Highness, what's wrong?"

"fine."

Yan Yize slowly withdrew her gaze, but stopped halfway through her action. The conversation seemed familiar.
