Inheritance

Mo Xin and Qu Hong's master rushed over after receiving the message from the sect leader, and bumped into Immortal Venerable Mu on the way.

"Immortal Venerable, are you also going to see the Sect Leader?" Mo Xin's master, Elder Jianfeng, asked casually.

"Yes, the sect leader said he has important matters to discuss with me," Mu Qing replied coldly.

Elder Jianfeng nodded without asking any further questions. The three of them arrived outside the Sect Leader's Hall and saw three people kneeling neatly in formation.

Looking at the soot and burn marks on the three men, Elder Jianfeng asked, "Where did you set fire to?"

Mo Xin lowered his head, not daring to speak. Qu Hong looked away, not daring to meet his gaze. Wen Zheng raised her head, revealing a face like a cat's, and said, "It has nothing to do with them. I set the fire."

Knowing who the instigator was, Elder Jianfeng felt more confident and strode arrogantly into the hall, with Qu Hong's master following closely behind.

Mu Qing did not go in with them, but instead stood beside the three of them, observing Wen Zheng.

[Ahhh! It's the Celestial Venerable! Go and strike up a conversation with him, win him over!]

The system's voice rang out, making Wen Zheng frown.

[Hurry, host, hurry up!] the system urged.

He ignored the sound of the zither.

[Hurry, host, or the Immortal Venerable will leave.]

Unable to bear the noise in her head any longer, Wen Zheng asked the question that had been hidden in her heart, "Do you have a crush on the Immortal Venerable and want me to win him over before possessing my body?"

Wen Zheng's question silenced the system, as did Mu Qing.

He'd rather be won over by Wen Zheng than by some unknown force.

[What are you saying?] The system was incredulous.

"Otherwise, why are you rushing me like this?" Wen Zheng said with a pained tone, "Interspecies relationships never end well. I advise you to give up."

[...]

The system went silent; it seemed to have crashed.

Mu Qing's expression twisted for a moment before returning to its aloof state. He seemed to glance at Wen Zheng before stepping into the hall.

The three knelt outside the hall, whispering among themselves.

Qu Hong: "What should we do? Master has definitely been scolded to death by the sect leader."

Mosin: "My master probably thinks it's about the same."

Seeing the two of them looking like they had lost their parents, Wen Zheng said, "If they go in later, I'll stop them from saying anything."

“How can that be? This is the fault of all three of us. How can we put all the blame on you?” the two said in unison.

Wen Zheng: "But I drew the talisman and activated its power."

Qu Hong and Mo Xin: "We were the ones who suggested you try first."

Wen Zheng: "..."

They can take the blame themselves.

Forget it, she'll just speak up first and admit her guilt. She'll accept being expelled from the sect.

The three hadn't been kneeling for long when Elder Jianfeng stormed out and shouted, "Get back in here!"

The three of them supported each other as they staggered into the hall.

The atmosphere inside the hall was not pleasant.

Elder Kong hadn't left after finishing his complaint when he saw the three of them come in, and he snorted angrily.

The sect leader offered a few words of reassurance, then addressed the three who entered, asking, "Which of you burned down the library?"

"It's me," the three said in unison.

The sect leader glared at the three of them. "Elder Kong only managed to detect a trace of spiritual energy."

Wen Zheng stepped forward and said with an awkward smile, "I started the fire."

The sect leader was skeptical. The shelves in the library were made of fire-resistant wood. Wen Zheng hadn't become a disciple of any elder, so how could she possibly set the library on fire?

"You're probably saying this to take the blame for them, aren't you?"

The sect leader's suspicions were shared by everyone present. How could Wen Zheng, whose foundation had been destroyed, possibly set fire to the library?

Seeing that some people didn't believe her, Wen Zheng quickly explained, "I accidentally found a book on talisman cultivation and, out of curiosity, drew the Fiery Talisman on it, which ended up setting the library on fire."

She explained the situation, and the sect leader believed her to some extent. He casually asked, "Then how many times did you draw it to create such a powerful Fiery Talisman?"

According to Elder Kong, the flames that shot out were two or three feet high. He suspected that Mo Xin was responsible, since he had a Golden Fire Spirit Root.

Wen Zheng lowered her head and whispered, "Once."

The sect leader didn't hear clearly and asked again.

Wen Zheng gritted her teeth and shouted, "I'll draw it in one go!"

As soon as she finished speaking, the elders present looked at her in surprise. Elder Jianfeng didn't believe her and retorted, "Who are you trying to fool?"

To be able to draw a Fiery Talisman in one go—even the Qingling Daoist back then wasn't that skilled.

Mu Qing didn't believe it either. He had seen his master, Daoist Qingling, draw talismans. He would sit at the table and draw for a whole day, and he could only successfully draw a few dozen.

The sect leader didn't believe it either, saying, "I know you want to stay in the sect, but this joke is really not funny."

Hearing their doubts about Wen Zheng, Mo Xin hurriedly stood up and said, "She really only drew it once. Qu Hong and I both watched her draw it."

Master Qu Hong cast an inquiring glance at Gu Yun, and Qu Hong nodded, indicating that what Mo Xin said was true.

The sect leader stroked his beard and pondered for a moment, then took out yellow paper and cinnabar and used his spiritual power to present them to Wen Zheng. "There's no point in saying more. Why don't you draw it again?"

Wen Zheng took the yellow paper and cinnabar, glanced at them, picked up a brush dipped in ink, dipped it in cinnabar, and began to paint.

There were no tables in the hall, so she could only sit on the floor and slowly draw on the paper placed on the stool.

The sect leader wanted to go over and take a look, but was worried about disturbing Wen Zheng's thoughts, so he gave up and instead talked to Mu Qing.

"If she can draw it, I want to keep her."

Mu Qing turned her head, her cool eyes filled with confusion, "Isn't she a handyman disciple in the library?"

"If she has talent in talisman cultivation, I will find her a master." The sect leader really didn't want to see a genius perish.

If Wen Zheng has talent in the field of talismans, we should let her give it a try.

Mu Qing lowered her eyes and fell into deep thought.

After their conversation ended, Wen Zheng finished drawing the talisman and handed it to the sect leader. "It's done. It's still the Fiery Talisman. I only remember this one."

The sect leader waved his hand to indicate that he didn't care, and used his spiritual power to activate the talisman. The towering flames almost burned the roof beams.

Everyone present looked at Wen Zheng with admiration, and then with regret.

What a genius! He has a mutated wind spirit root, a natural sword bone, and can draw a talisman successfully in one go. It's rare to see someone so amazing.

The sect leader was heartbroken and was so distressed that he wanted to find the person who dug up the sword bone and whip his corpse.

Look, look, what a brilliant talent, ruined by all means.

Seeing the sect leader's sorrowful expression, Wen Zheng cautiously said, "Sect leader, I can compensate for the burned cultivation techniques and bookshelves."

"No need," the sect leader sighed and shook his head.

Wen Zheng thought she was going to be kicked out, and her heart sank.

These past few days, she has been reading through a large amount of history of the cultivation world in the library, which has ignited her desire to cultivate immortality.

She stayed behind to avoid being hunted down and to fool the system, but now she really wants to cultivate immortality and live forever.

Wen Zheng looked up and met Mu Qing's amber eyes, their gazes drifting.

After much deliberation, the sect leader made up his mind: "You have a good talent for talisman cultivation. I will find you a master to train with. There are countless rare and precious materials in the cultivation world. Perhaps there is something that can repair a person's foundation."

Wen Zheng stared blankly at the sect leader in disbelief, then suddenly lowered her head and called out to the system in her mind. After receiving a response, she breathed a sigh of relief, "I thought you possessed the sect leader and gave me a cheat code."

[ah? ]

Standing beside the sect leader, Mu Qing reminded him, "The Zhuxian Sect has no talisman cultivator elders."

Sect Leader: "Didn't your master leave behind a legacy at Aoxue Peak? Today, I'll take charge and help him accept a disciple."

Mo Xin and Qu Hong looked at Wen Zheng with envy after hearing this.

This could be considered a blessing in disguise.

Elder Jianfeng and Elder Guyun's expressions changed. Elder Jianfeng couldn't help but remind them, "I remember that Qingling Daoist's inheritance is extremely dangerous. She is probably not safe as she is only at the early stage of Foundation Establishment."

The sect leader looked at Wen Zheng, asking for her opinion.

Wen Zheng turned the wooden bracelet on her wrist and said seriously, "I want to try it."

Her foundation was damaged, and her cultivation speed was ten times slower than others. By the time she reached the Golden Core stage, she would have long since died of old age. It would be better to take a gamble.

“Alright,” the sect leader replied approvingly, and said to Mu Qing, “Immortal Mu, thank you for your trouble.”

"It's alright."

The three walked away together. Qu Hong watched their retreating figures and murmured, "Do you think she can get through this?"

Mosin: "It should be possible, after all, she's quite good at drawing talismans."

They succeeded twice in a row.

Before they could finish speaking, their respective masters dragged them back to be punished.

On Aoxue Peak, there were no trees in sight, and the entire mountain was covered with falling snowflakes.

The three landed, and Wen Zheng hugged her arms tightly, shivering from the cold.

Seeing how cold she was, the sect leader was about to perform a hand seal to help her resist the cold when Mu Qing's voice came: "The cold tempers one's character. If she really becomes my junior sister, the cold days ahead will be long."

The sect leader thought about it and realized that it made sense, so he put down his hand that was forming a hand seal.

Wen Zheng watched helplessly as the sect leader was persuaded by Mu Qing, and secretly glared at Mu Qing.

When she becomes powerful, she'll teach Mu Qing a lesson.

The three walked for a while and then stopped in front of a stone wall.

The sect leader took out the token and affixed it, and a door appeared on the stone wall. The sect leader said to Wen Zheng, "Go in, but do what you can, and don't push yourself."

"I understand," Wen Zheng nodded.

Watching the two part ways, Mu Qing said, "Don't die inside, tarnishing my master's legacy."

He was met with a cold snort and Wen Zheng's retreating figure.

After watching Wen Zheng walk away, the sect leader said to Mu Qing, "Don't be too harsh on her; she's a pitiful person too."

Mu Qing did not refute the sect leader's words, but took out a fox fur cloak from her storage ring and sat down on the ground.

Snowflakes fell on his white hair, his aloof and solitary demeanor blending seamlessly with his surroundings.

The sect leader sighed and sat down beside him to advise him: "I know you're thinking about the past again and are worried about attracting people who covet your sword bones."

When Qingling Daoist found Mu Qing, he was being chased by people who wanted to take the sword bone from his body. Those people were vicious and ruthless, and Qingling Daoist investigated for a long time but could not find out.

Mu Qing remained unmoved.

"I've dealt with all the assassins outside the mountain gate, but I'll leave Wen Zheng behind," the sect leader said in an unyielding tone. "I'll have Yun Ge find a way to restore her memory and find the group of people who dug out the sword bone back then."

After speaking, Mu Qing looked up at the sect leader: "This is very dangerous."

Even though he was already a master of the Void Refinement stage, he wasn't confident in dealing with the group that was digging out immortal bones.

Moreover, he had no desire to get involved in such matters and bring potential dangers to the Immortal Pursuit Sect.

The sect leader seemed to know what he was thinking, and said with a deep gaze, "Mu Qing, your master, Daoist Qingling, died while investigating the truth. As his close friend, I will definitely help him complete what he did not finish."

"Besides, someone has to stand up for the victims. Your master, Daoist Qingling, is one, and so am I. I hope you can do it too."

After listening, Mu Qing remained silent for a long time before nodding in agreement: "I understand."

The sect leader's face immediately lit up with joy. Just as he was about to speak, there was a movement on the stone wall, and a dusty figure rolled out.

The two looked over at the same time. The person was curled up on the ground, slowly raising his hand, holding a blue brocade pen.

"This is?"

"The ritual implements used by my master during his lifetime."

The sect leader beamed with joy, stepped forward to help Wen Zheng up, patted her shoulder, and said with satisfaction, "I knew I hadn't misjudged you."

Wen Zheng smiled weakly, her face as pale as paper, and her clothes had several large holes burned in them.

She tried to say something, but her body gave way and she collapsed to the ground.

Before she fell into a deep sleep, she saw the person who said that cold air tempers one's character wearing a thick fox fur cloak, and an inexplicable anger rose in her heart.

She was completely stunned.
