33/Heartbeat

33/Heartbeat

Zhao Lili was quite surprised that Qiao Zhiwan invited her to a concert. She couldn't figure out where Chen Mian and Qiao Zhiwan had anything in common. After thinking for a long time, she could only come up with the idea that they both appeared on the same confession wall and were related to the same man. But she quickly overturned this argument. For some reason, Zhao Lili was very determined to believe that Chen Mian and Shen Yu had absolutely no chance of having a relationship.

After much deliberation, the class bell rang, and all the gossip was buried under the exam paper.

Another day passed in the blink of an eye, and as school was about to end, Chen Ke reduced the countdown to the college entrance examination on the blackboard by one day.

It went from sixty-one to sixty.

There are less than two months left until the college entrance examination.

Looking at the blackboard, Liu Junjie, unusually sentimental, turned to Chen Mian and Zhao Lili and said, "In less than two months, we will be going our separate ways."

That sounded a bit disgusting. Chen Mian and Liu Junjie weren't very close to begin with. It was only after Lin Lin's incident that they became more familiar and could talk more. Boys are naturally outgoing and cheerful. They would greet each other a few times and then, being classmates sitting next to each other, they would just arbitrarily categorize each other as friends.

She didn't say anything, she just packed her things.

Zhao Lili, who was standing next to her, gagged first and retorted without any politeness, "I wish we could go our separate ways right now." Then she put her hands together and made a wish to the sky, "May I never have a love-struck mind again in my life."

Liu Junjie was stung by these words. Almost everyone in Class 3 knew that he had failed to confess his feelings to Lin Lin. He was often teased about it. After Lin Lin started getting along well with the music class and gradually stopped talking to people from his class, more people disliked her, and the number of people making fun of Liu Junjie also increased.

Just as Liu Junjie was about to swear, he heard the sports committee member, who was sitting in the back row near the door, shout, "Hey, what's my brother Yu doing here?"

The sports committee member is the one who received sneakers from Shen Yu for her birthday. She loves playing basketball, has a lot of friends, and can be considered the social butterfly of Class 3.

His shout drew the attention of half the class. Liu Junjie, with his hand on Chen Mian's desk, also looked back as if watching a spectacle, only to meet Shen Yu's gaze.

Liu Junjie was stunned, thinking it was a hallucination, and moved to the side, only to find that Shen Yu was still looking at him.

Hesitantly, he asked, "Looking for... looking for me?"

Then they saw Shen Yu leaning against the door, not going in. His class's sports committee member stood next to him like a madam, gesturing with his hand towards the classroom, saying in a rather magnanimous tone, "Choose any of my classmates. I'll bring out whoever you want."

Liu Junjie was already getting up, saying, "Maybe they're looking for me?"

As soon as he put his foot down, he heard Shen Yu's voice.

"Looking for Chen Mian from your class."

Liu Junjie immediately cursed, the words "So embarrassing!" were on the tip of his tongue but he swallowed them back. As he was about to turn around, he saw Zhao Lili with an expression even more disgusted than his own, looking like she had wet her pants and been caught. She stared at Chen Mian, who was packing her things, with a look of astonishment on her face.

The only ones who could be considered calm were the people involved.

The fervor surrounding the confession wall hadn't died down yet, and many people, like Liu Junjie, kept glancing at Chen Mian and then at Shen Yu. Their voyeuristic desires reached their peak when they saw Chen Mian carrying a bag and walking towards the back door, stopping in front of Shen Yu.

It looked like a confession scene was about to unfold, but Chen Mian brushed past him without even glancing at him. Shen Yu also had no expression, and even chuckled. He said goodbye to the bewildered sports committee member and followed behind Chen Mian.

The two figures passed by the window one after the other.

Only after they completely disappeared around the corner did someone shout "fuck!" as if it were a switch, and after that shout, a chorus of "fuck!" followed.

"Did I mess up the test? Shen Yu came to see Chen Mian?"

"Holy crap, did they really kiss in the bathroom?"

"When did they start this? I haven't seen them say a word, have I?"

"Maybe when you go to the toilet?"

"..."

The excitement in the classroom was behind them; people were watching them all the way to the school gate.

Chen Mian ignored everyone else and kept walking forward until she stepped out of the school gate. Then someone grabbed her backpack and said lazily to her, "Where are you going? Get in the car."

It referred to the car the driver had parked at the school gate. Chen Mian stopped and asked Chen Yu, "Can't I walk back by myself?"

"Sure, if you want to see Chen Song at the entrance of the residential area."

These words made Chen Mian frown, but she didn't say anything more. Her backpack strap was pulled, and she was led into the car like a dog on a leash. When the car door closed, she glanced out the window and met countless pairs of shocked eyes. Their eyes were full of information, which could be summed up in two words: "Holy crap!"

She sat up straight, took the backpack off her shoulder, hugged it to her chest, unzipped it, took out the concert ticket that Qiao Zhiwan had given her, and handed it to Chen Yu, saying, "Qiao Zhiwan gave it to me."

Shen Yu was looking at his phone when he heard this. He looked up and saw the ticket, but didn't take it. He glanced at the time as she held it up and asked, "Saturday afternoon. Are you planning to go?"

"I don't know." Chen Mian put the ticket down between the two of them. "I roughly know what she wants to talk to me about, either you or Ruan Yanmei, but there's nothing to talk about, and—"

She pointed to the words "Miyazaki Hayao Theme" written on the ticket and said to Shen Yu, "I haven't seen any of Miyazaki Hayao's movies either."

Her tone was calm, and after she finished speaking, she looked at Chen Yu.

Her eyes held a questioning look, as if she were asking for his opinion, asking him whether he should go.

Shen Yu was silent for a moment, then said, "Don't read tonight."

Chen Mian was taken aback and was about to ask why when she heard Shen Yu say to her again, "Haven't you seen it before? Let's watch it tonight. We haven't used the home theater yet."

As the car turned a corner and was about to enter the Grand Mansion, Chen Mian saw Chen Song loitering at the entrance. He was standing with his hands in his pockets, bending over and lighting a cigarette, glancing around every now and then. As the car passed by, Chen Song's eyes lingered on the car for a moment. The gate opened, the car drove in, and Chen Song looked away and then looked ahead again.

He didn't see her.

Chen Mian looked away, then looked at Chen Yu and said to him, "Okay, then let's watch."

The media room was originally a bedroom. The dark gray sofa looked about the same size as the bed, which looked quite dangerous in the dimly lit room. Both of them had taken a shower. Shen Yu said to change into comfortable clothes before coming in, so Chen Mian changed into her pajamas and came in, only to see Shen Yu still in his school uniform, sitting there flipping through movies.

There were quite a few options to choose from, and the covers were all anime. Chen Yu held a remote control and rowed from Spirited Away to Howl's Moving Castle and then to Mermaid Princess on the Cliff by the Sea. In the end, he had a bit of a headache choosing.

He wasn't a big moviegoer, and he watched even less anime. He only watched Ultraman and Pokémon with You Huai and the others when he was a kid. Back then, everyone believed in light, but Chen Yu was the only one who harmed light and his friends. He said, "There is no Ultraman or Pikachu in the world."

You Huai cried so hard his nose was running, and he even fought with Shen Yu several times. In the end, it was only when the adults came that they were separated.

After that, no one ever asked Shen Yu to watch these things together again.

Now, flipping through these pages, one by one, I feel like I'm being really stupid.

The question is still lingering on Baidu on my phone.

Which of Hayao Miyazaki's works is the most famous?

The answer provided a list of ten works.

He changed it again: Which Miyazaki Hayao movie should I take the girl to see?

Baidu Answer: 16 heartwarming anime films by Hayao Miyazaki that girls love to watch!

Sinking Domain: ...

Chen Mian sat next to him, glanced at his phone, and then looked up at the screen.

He said to Shen Yu, "This one will do."

The mouse hovers over the four characters "Spirited Away".

The phone next to me had been untouched for a long time, and the screen was off.

The room was enclosed, with no windows, and the central air conditioning was on, blowing cool air on the late spring night in April.

Shen Yu pressed play and then grabbed a blanket from the side and threw it on her.

Neither of them spoke again, with a space between them that was neither too close nor too far.

The music flows quietly, and the wonderful anime world is vibrant with color.

Shen Yu recalled several answers on Baidu that said someone took their girlfriend to see this movie and ended up making her cry.

He glanced at Chen Mian. Her face was expressionless, the light from the screen reflected in her black pupils. She was obediently covered with a blanket, her long hair was tied up, and the white lace at the neckline of her pink pajamas was reflected as green by the fields on the screen.

She looks so gentle, like she's part of a movie.

Like a female protagonist who should live in an anime.

Chen Mian seemed oblivious to Shen Yu watching him. He hugged his knees, rested his chin on them, and asked Shen Yu, "Do you like No-Face?"

"What the hell?"

Chen Mian reached out and pointed at the screen.

Shen Yu then glanced at the screen.

On the screen, a huge, faceless black figure is fawning over the female protagonist, offering her food and gold and silver jewelry and asking if she wants them.

—Do you want to eat it? It's delicious!

Do you want gold?

—I'm only giving it to you, not to anyone else.

—Tell me what you want.

I'm so lonely.

Its slime reveals its greed for the female protagonist, accompanied by the buzzing sound of flies.

Shen Yu frowned. "Does anyone really like something that looks like this?"

Chen Mian paused for a moment before saying, "I think so."

"So, do you like it?"

Chen Mian didn't answer, and after a while asked him again, "Then do you like Bai Long?"

Who the hell is this?

Shen Yu wasn't watching the movie at all, just like being called on by the teacher to answer questions in a class he didn't understand at all.

He put away his phone and took the remote. "Does this mean I should watch it again?"

Chen Mian pursed her lips, rested her chin on her knees, and said softly, "You don't want to watch the movie at all, but you still want to watch it with me. Are you afraid that Qiao Zhiwan will look down on me?"

Shen Yu immediately laughed, "Chen Mian, what's going on in your head? You're thinking so much. I just thought you wanted to go to the concert with her because you like her."

Chen Mian was taken aback.

“Otherwise, why would you go with her? It’s hard enough to get you to go out with me normally. Why would you go to a concert with someone so unimportant? It can’t be because you feel guilty.”

With a tone that was subtle yet impactful, he subtly revealed the truth, pretending not to understand. He knew all along that Chen Mian had shown him the concert tickets because she wanted his help in making a decision.

Chen Mian is a contradictory person at times. He seems cold-blooded, but sometimes he can't bring himself to be a completely bad person. He can't be completely indifferent. He walks on a tightrope, just like he can't completely ignore Song Ai's tragedy, and he can't really act like nothing happened after using Qiao Zhiwan.

I have an answer in my heart, but at certain times I refuse to face that answer directly.

To put it bluntly, it's self-contradictory. Now that Shen Yu has said it, her expression is cold, and she doesn't even look at him. She subconsciously retorts, "Why should I feel guilty? I'm not the one who rejected her."

"Okay, it's me."

Seeing that the person next to him didn't seem interested in watching the movie, Shen Yu reached out and pulled her over, making her sit on his lap. Like petting a cat, he slipped his hand under her clothes and stroked her spine. "Why is your mouth as hard as your bones? Do you know why I went to your class tonight?"

"have no idea."

"Does he really not know, or is he pretending not to know?"

He didn't stop what he was doing as he spoke, unhooking her bra and complaining, "Why are you wearing a bra after taking a shower?"

He's really acting like a hooligan while pretending to be a gentleman.

Chen Mian was rendered speechless until her chest was grasped, at which point she instinctively let out a soft moan, "Mmm..."

Shen Yu laughed, "Does 'hmm' mean you know but pretend you don't?"

Chen Mian rolled her eyes at him.

She knew that Shen Yu had blocked her path, bringing their relationship into the open and leaving her with no way out.

This made Qiao Zhiwan's invitation in the morning a joke, and Shen Yu directly provided the correct answer to the seemingly ambiguous test.

Everyone is speculating about her relationship with Shen Yu.

So he came directly to her classroom door and answered her question with his actions.

She didn't say anything.

Shen Yu gripped her waist and moved his leg slightly, causing Chen Mian to fall into his arms.

"Do you know what people will say tomorrow?"

He kissed her eyes, his breath lingering on her skin, as if she were being kissed a second time.

Chen Mian's breathing was unsteady, and her voice was panting.

"Tell us about how you helped others by taking your classmate home."

"Fine, then everyone will know tomorrow that I'm only helping this one person, and I can't do any other good deeds. So Chen Mian, why are you even going to that concert? You're too lazy to even watch a movie. Stop wasting your time on unimportant people. Instead of doing your review questions, you might as well make love to me."

As the movie, which no one was watching, came to an end, the female protagonist and her parents escaped.

Outside the movie, Chen Mian, who was being held on his lap, reached out to cover Shen Yu's nonsensical mouth, saying, "You're so annoying, don't talk."

Shen Yu didn't comply with her request. Instead, he changed his tone, abandoning his usual lazy manner, and spoke to her in a voice that sounded like a radio broadcast reciting a love poem.

"I only want you, I don't want anyone else."

"I'm so lonely."

"Stay with me."

Chen Mian's eyelashes trembled, her heart skipped a beat, and her outstretched hand was grasped and pulled to his face.

His eyelashes trembled beneath her fingertips, and his clear black eyes gazed at her.

Then, smiling, he asked her.

"How do you like it?"

Just now, Chen Mian asked him if he liked the tone of No-Face.

He countered with a question at that moment.

I used the same words No-Face said to the female protagonist in the movie, changed the wording, and said it to her again.

Finally, I asked her.

Chen Mian, do you like her?

Though speech was slurred, the beating of the heart on this somewhat sultry spring night provided the answer.
