In order to successfully enter the Prime Minister's Mansion, Jin Wade disguised himself as a middle-aged man, wearing a wig, a false beard, and an old cloth shirt.
So Hongyan didn't recognize who he was.
Hong Yan's mouth was covered, so she could only nod. She nodded violently, indicating that she was almost out of breath.
Jin Wade understood and let go of her mouth, pushing her away from him.
"Jin Wade," Tang Ruozhi suddenly called him, his words cold and without warmth, "Hurry up and leave now. Hong Yan is shouting so loudly, someone will be here soon."
"Okay." Tang Ruozhi saw the reluctance in Jin Wade's eyes, but ignored it.
"Wait," Tang Ruozhi stopped him, "Don't come to see me anymore. If I need anything, I'll go to the General's Mansion to find you. Remember what I said."
Jin Wade frowned. Did Zhizhi hate himself again? But he still said, "Okay," and left without looking back.
As soon as he left, Tang Ruozhi slapped Hong Yan in the face.
“Kneel down!”
Tang Ruozhi's eyes were fierce, and his murderous eyebrows were very similar to Tang Cuiyan's.
"Miss, you--" Hong Yan felt extremely aggrieved.
"Don't talk." Tang Ruozhi shook his head at her.
Hong Yan was still confused when Tang Cuiyan's voice came from behind: "Are you scolding the servants again?"
Mrs. Tang, supported by her maid, walked into the house with the air of an empress dowager inspecting her concubines in the harem.
"Mother."
"lady."
"What mistake did you make?" Madam Tang pinched Hongyan's face with one hand, feeling sorry for the red slap marks on her face. She said to Tang Ruozhi, "Isn't this a bit too harsh? No matter what mistake you made, you shouldn't be so cruel to a little girl."
She said this as if Tang Ruozhi had never been beaten or scolded by her when he was a child.
In the past, she would beat Tang Ruozhi whenever she was unhappy, and this went on year after year.
"Nothing, she just stole my things and I caught her red-handed." Tang Ruozhi lied again in front of Mrs. Tang. She was panicked, but she had to pretend to be calm. "I hit her a few times, and she screamed like that. I'm sorry to have embarrassed you, mother."
What she meant was that she was teaching her own maid in her own yard, so Mrs. Tang didn't need to worry about it.
But Mrs. Tang had just fallen asleep when she was woken up by the ghost's cry.
"So, those screams just now were made by her?" Madam Tang looked at Hong Yan questioningly, but she said to Tang Ruozhi: "She should be beaten, then. Where's my whip?"
The maid behind Mrs. Tang handed over the whip. Hong Yan looked at the whip that was three fingers thick, her whole body trembling, and cold sweat running down her back.
“Snap—”
"ah--"
After one whip, Hong Yan couldn't help but scream.
"You are still too merciful. A thief should be skinned and his tendons pulled out and thrown into the street as a warning to the public. This is considered a light punishment." There was a look of determination and ruthlessness in Mrs. Tang's eyes.
Hongyan felt that there was liquid flowing on her back. It must be her blood. The place where the whip had hit her was numb with pain. It hurt so much.
“Snap—”
Another whip came down, and Hong Yan screamed even more miserably. Her whole body fell forward and she fainted.
Mrs. Tang said, "I don't even have the ability to bear this. I'm not even as good as you."
As he spoke, he glanced at Tang Ruozhi and gave a sinister smile.
Tang Ruozhi was stared at and felt creepy, as if the person in front of her was not her mother, but a female ghost who came to take her life.
"Alright," Madam Tang threw the whip at the person behind her, "pay her this month's salary, pack it up, and throw it out of the house. The Prime Minister's House doesn't need a thief."
"But mother," Tang Ruozhi found his voice again, "she is my personal maid..."
"I'll arrange a new maid for you," Madam Tang said with a smile, "It's such a big Prime Minister's Mansion, and there's not even a decent maid."
In fact, Mrs. Tang had long wanted to find an opportunity to kill Hong Yan. If Tang Ruozhi was not surrounded by her own people, she would not even be able to sleep peacefully.
She was on guard against Tang Ruozhi as if he were a thief.
The servants came and carried Hong Yan away. Madam Tang was about to leave. Tang Ruozhi suddenly woke up as if from a dream. Everything she saw was real, not a dream.
Her mother once refreshed her understanding of her. It turned out that this woman could really be so cruel.
But she still had a little hope, a little hope for the good side of her mother's nature.
"Wait," Tang Ruozhi called out to Madam Tang, "Mother, if I make a mistake like this one day, will you treat me the same way?"
Mrs. Tang turned around in confusion, smiled at her question, and said, "What are you thinking about? Silly child, mother knows that you will never be a thief, nor will you lie to mother. Isn't it?"
Tang Ruozhi was sweating coldly, but she still didn't answer herself directly. What she meant was, if she made her unhappy one day, would she kill her without hesitation?
Before Mrs. Tang walked out of the house, she suddenly turned back. Tang Ruozhi was startled. She covered her chest and tried to calm herself down.
"You seem to be very close to that kid from the General's Mansion recently?"
Hearing this, Tang Ruozhi almost lost her balance. How did Mrs. Tang know about this? She dodged his gaze and said stubbornly, "No, I haven't had any contact with him for a long time."
"Really?" Mrs. Tang's eyes were full of inquiry. "It's not good to lie."
Tang Ruozhi felt a dull pain at the spot where her scar hadn't fully healed yet, and cold sweat broke out on her back. She lowered her head as if she could feel the distrust in Mrs. Tang's eyes as she looked at her.
