At the research institute, Edison employed a team of engineers, mechanics, physicists, and others, with 14 core members.
They were in charge of research and experimentation, while Edison was responsible for coming up with ideas, liaising with clients and investors, and dealing with the media.
The famous Nikola Tesla, the inventor of alternating current, once worked in this team.
Li Changzhou accompanied Edison on a tour of his laboratory and watched him light up the electric light.
"Franklin caught lightning, I caught light." Edison was full of ambition.
His future is as bright as a light bulb, and he is about to have the lifespan of a vampire; the king could not be better off.
"Captured lightning and light?" Bi crossed her arms over her chest, her expression and tone extremely contemptuous.
Edison looked at her, then at Li Changzhou.
“She’s a superhuman, she looks down on ordinary humans, and even more so on great ordinary people. You should understand this,” Li Changzhou explained.
"Me!" Bi was about to say something when Li Changzhou covered her mouth—symbolicly.
Bi said nothing more, but spat symbolically into Li Changzhou's palm with a "Pah!"
Although he didn't, Li Changzhou still wiped his right hand on his left arm—still just a symbolic gesture.
Well, strictly speaking, Franklin's capture of lightning and Edison's capture of light are actually symbolic.
"A superpowered person?" Edison wasn't angry at being mocked; instead, he became interested in Bi's identity.
“Let her deal with Goebbels,” Li Changzhou said.
"Who is Goebbels?" Edison asked, puzzled.
"A werewolf."
Whether the other party genuinely didn't know or was pretending not to know, Li Changzhou didn't care.
After visiting the laboratory, it was lunchtime, and Edison invited the two to lunch.
"Daytime, this is the best cider and brandy of the year."
The wine was frozen in a bucket filled with ice, along with some grapes with green leaves; just looking at it made one feel refreshed in this kind of weather.
Bi pulled off a grape and started eating it.
Edison poured brandy for Li Changzhou and himself, and then said to Bi, "Miss Bi, I won't pour any for you. Please help yourself and eat whatever you like."
"Where are the servants?" Bi subconsciously looked for them.
Edison picked up the glass of brandy, hesitated for a moment, and explained, "I don't want the servants to know about vampires."
"It's okay, ignore her." Li Changzhou tasted a piece of smoked pork.
Edison nodded, took a sip of brandy, and then said impatiently, "Mr. Zhou, actually, it's like this. I only met Mr. Morgan once and received his financial support, but I don't know anything about vampires."
"Hmm." Li Changzhou also took a sip of wine to wash away the taste of smoked pork in his mouth.
“I’ve been researching this a lot lately,” Edison glanced at Li Changzhou and continued, “The research says that vampires die if their hearts are impaled on wooden stakes. Is that true?”
“Even God, with his heart nailed to him, would die.” Li Changzhou picked up a tortilla and poured maple syrup on it. “It all depends on how you understand the heart.”
Edison hesitated, waving the brandy in his hand: "Mr. Zhou, you know that's not what I meant. I just want to know if vampires can actually be killed by wooden stakes."
Li Changzhou took a bite of the cornbread, chewing as he looked at Edison.
"You want me, a vampire, to tell you that a wooden stake can kill a vampire?"
"I... okay, let's change the subject. I also found out that there's a type of vampire in the Americas called the sheep-eating beast. Is there any connection between it and vampires?"
"It's quite a coincidence. I also know of an animal called a mosquito in Asia, and a woman named Xia who also sucks blood. To be honest, last time I was lying in a cemetery in Chicago, I couldn't sleep because I was thinking about this. When I came to my senses, I could already see Chicago's blue sky, which looked like a robin's egg."
Li Changzhou took a sip of brandy.
"—My eyes almost went blind, so, Mr. Edison, let me give you a quote that a female philosopher once gave me: Don't think about things that have no outcome; it's bad for your sleep and your eyes."
He had no idea what vampires were, even though he himself was a vampire now.
“Alright.” Edison raised his glass.
Bang!
The wine glass rolled away, the brandy quickly soaking the white tablecloth. Edison's eyes rolled back, and he fell sideways into the corn porridge in front of him.
The condensed milk next to it also overturned.
His eyes were rapidly losing their luster, falling toward death at an alarming speed.
"Ugh..." Bi held her head with one hand and clutched her stomach with the other.
Her head felt dizzy as if someone was shaking her violently, and her stomach was cramping.
Li Changzhou showed no unusual behavior, but his expression darkened.
"Hiss~" The king cobra slithered out of the void, raised its upper body, quickly licked a mouthful of brandy, and then bit into the neck of Edison, who seemed to be dead.
Bi Wei was panting slightly as she withstood the fierce onslaught of the poison.
Edison slowly resumed breathing, but remained unconscious.
"What's going on!" Bi was furious, her little face fierce.
"It was my carelessness." Li Changzhou picked up a napkin and carefully wiped his hands clean.
He stood up and walked towards the kitchen, with Bi leaping off her chair and following him.
"Hiss~" Inside the living room, the four-meter-long body of the king cobra snake snaked around Edison like it was building a nest, not allowing anyone to approach.
In the kitchen, the floor was covered in blood. The maid lay in a pool of blood, her head missing. There was a black, viscous substance on the floor, as if someone had eaten the head and spat out the hair there.
