"Your Majesty?" Duke Shadonbreck spoke, interrupting the king's thoughts. Varian then realized that he had not replied to the girl.
"Excuse me, both of you. I just thought of something else." Varian laughed at himself, then asked about a topic that he cared about most.
"Baron Seberchel, what are your plans for the future?"
Claudia thought for a moment and replied, "Not in the short term, Your Majesty. I intend to first settle my subjects and my family before making any further decisions."
"I just learned some of your situation from Grayson. Since you don't have a good place to go right now," Varian said with anticipation, "could you serve me and become my courtier?"
Will I wield my sword for you, fight for you, bleed for you? Your Majesty Varian, what kind of man are you? Are you the king worthy of my true loyalty and my all?
The blonde girl looked up at the dark-haired king, his eyes confident and enthusiastic as he awaited the girl's response.
Never mind, putting aside the fact that her sister and subjects still needed to be taken care of, King Varian's tolerance of her reckless entry into the palace today and his kindness in agreeing to her request to shelter the victims were enough to make her serve him temporarily.
Claudia left the table and knelt on one knee before King Varian again, but she uttered a non-traditional oath: "By the Holy Light, I swear my loyalty to you, Lord Varian Wrynn, until I have repaid my debt or you have no further need of me."
Duke Shadonbreck on the side hesitated to speak, but King Varian laughed nonchalantly with a hint of nostalgia in his eyes: "Hahaha, this is the first time I've heard such an impressive oath of allegiance in all these years."
King Varian then drew his sword and gently placed it on the girl's shoulder. He replied, also without following standard etiquette, "I accept the allegiance of you, Baron Claudia Sepulcher, and become your lord. From now on, I will protect your safety and wealth, never giving you the opportunity to repay my favor, and I trust that you will always fight for the Holy Light and my honor."
After saying this, he put away his sword. There was still a smile in his words, but the address had changed: "Stand up, Lady Claudia."
Claudia couldn't help laughing as well. She had a very good initial impression of King Varian, and the distance between them had become much closer after the allegiance ceremony. She was no longer restrained during the subsequent meal, and the conversation between them became more casual.
After dinner, Claudia said goodbye, and King Varian asked Duke Shadonbreck to see her off. He also asked Duke Shadonbreck, who was an acquaintance of hers, to reminisce with her and give her a brief introduction to the palace.
Duke Shadonbreck smiled wryly and said, "Your character and courage are truly worthy of being Angele's daughter."
"How is that possible?" Claudia couldn't help but blurt out. How could she have the same temper as her awful father?
Duke Shadonbreck spoke with a nostalgic look in his eyes, "Perhaps you haven't noticed, but your approach to solving problems is exactly the same as your father's. It may be a bit rude to say this, but he was a notorious troublemaker under Lord Lothar. It's only Lord Lothar who's tolerant; others wouldn't tolerate him."
Claudia was silent. Although she could understand some of her father's actions, she never wanted to be like him.
Looking at the somewhat silent girl, he sighed and changed the subject: "Although His Majesty has not yet decided on your specific position, court officials need to accompany His Majesty for a long time and not contradict His Majesty too much. In fact, His Majesty is often a little, uh, impatient."
Hearing this, Claudia was a little curious. During their interactions today, the king had given her the impression of being a gentle, polite and humorous person.
As if he could see the girl's doubt, Duke Shadonbrook explained, "Our Majesty is usually very easy to get along with and doesn't take trivial matters too seriously. He can be easily angered by many things, but most of the time, especially in front of foreign ministers, he can hold it in for a while."
"Moreover, Your Majesty is very opinionated and will not easily change his mind about things he has made up his mind about, especially since the death of Queen Tiffin five years ago. We may not fully agree with some of his decisions." Duke Shadonbrick seemed to have thought of something and sighed.
Claudia, however, raised her own doubts: "If you keep stubbornly sticking to wrong advice, what's the difference between you and a tyrant?"
Duke Shadonbreck looked at Claudia with a complicated expression and sighed, "Many things are not so clearly right or wrong. Don't worry, His Majesty Varian is very smart and won't make obvious mistakes. Moreover, if we really encounter such a situation, we will persuade him."
"Yes," Claudia agreed.
"By the way, His Majesty seems to have a special opinion of you. I haven't heard His Majesty laugh so happily in almost a year."
"Is that so?" Claudia was a little curious, but didn't ask any further questions.
Afterwards, Duke Shadonbrek introduced her to some common sense of the palace and talked about the situation of the Knights of the Silver Hand. It was from the Duke that Claudia learned about the latest situation of the Knights of the Silver Hand. The Paladins of Lordaeron suffered heavy losses, with only more than 300 people left. Even the leader of the Knights, Uther, the Messenger of Light who was infinitely close to a demigod, had died at the hands of his student Arthas a few days ago.
Claudia mourned for Uther's fate for a moment. She was not familiar with Uther, and she did not agree with the decision he made in Stratholme, but she always respected Uther's character.
