Chapter 74 Extra 01
Ji Ruan's first feeling after waking up was happiness because he heard Gu Xiuyi's voice.
The second feeling is pain, because the wound is really painful.
His lover's gentle kisses and whispers did not allow him to float in the clouds for too long, as the sudden pain pulled him back to earth.
Gu Xiuyi only saw Ji Ruan frowning, and the clear smile in his eyes disappeared in an instant, replaced by a groan of pain.
"Ji Ruan?!" Gu Xiuyi's heart skipped a beat.
Li Suian arrived shortly after and treated Ji Ruan's wound and examined his condition. A crowd of people gathered in front of the bed.
Gu Xiuyi was asked to step aside by the nurse and was unable to say a word to Ji Ruan the entire time. He could only occasionally glimpse Ji Ruan's tightly pursed pale lips through the corners of her white coat.
Ten minutes later, the ventilator and heart monitor were removed, and a large number of medical staff dispersed. Li Suian put his hands in the pockets of his white coat and raised his chin to Gu Xiuyi: "Okay, go in."
Gu Xiuyi looked up.
Li Suian's smiling eyes met Gu Xiuyi's furrowed brows, and he was stunned: "Why is there such an expression? He is still not happy even after waking up?"
Gu Xiuyi sat on a bench in the corridor, his shoulders slightly hunched, and gently raised his hand to wipe his face: "Is he okay?"
"Hmm," Li Suian sat down beside him and crossed his legs. "The monitors have been removed. You saw it all."
Gu Xiuyi nodded slightly, and said in a deep voice: "But he is in pain..."
It was difficult for him to describe this feeling. In fact, before Ji Ruan woke up, he was able to control his emotions very well. He worked for a while every day and talked to Ji Ruan. Although he didn't get a response, he enjoyed it.
Everyone knew that the operation was not too complicated and was quite successful. All they had to wait for was for Ji Ruan to wake up two days earlier or later. But when he really saw Ji Ruan open his eyes and saw that he was in unbearable pain, he realized that his emotions could fluctuate so greatly.
If he was also connected to a heart monitor at the time, his heart rate might have been even more terrifying than Ji Ruan's.
The cold incandescent light from the corridor fell on Gu Xiuyi's face, making him look indescribably lonely.
Li Suian was speechless: "This is normal. After all, it's an incision, how can it not hurt... I just gave him some painkillers, he should have recovered by now, let's go and see him."
He pursed his lips and said, "The child didn't say anything, but he kept blinking his eyes to look for you."
Gu Xiuyi's eyebrows twitched. Li Suian's words seemed to wake him up. His whole body was gradually filled with a fresh breath. He was no longer as dull and taciturn as before, confining himself in the quagmire.
He took a deep breath, stood up, and turned back to look at Li Suian before entering the door: "Thank you."
Li Suian rarely had such a serious conversation with Gu Xiuyi. He felt a little uncomfortable and coughed: "It's good that you know. Don't forget to treat me to a meal when you are discharged from the hospital."
Gu Xiuyi held the door handle, tilted his head and smiled when he heard it: "Okay."
"Come on, go in," Li Suian waved his hand. "By the way, he can eat later. Let him eat something easy to digest with less residue first. Observe his stomach condition. If there is no problem, then slowly add vegetables and meat."
He thought for a moment and added, "Also remember to exercise properly. When it's not too hot at night, you can go to the small garden and take a walk. Don't lie down all the time. If you are in good spirits, your body will get better faster."
Gu Xiuyi wrote them down one by one.
Turning around and pushing the door open, he saw that the curtains in the ward were completely opened. Perhaps the nurses also wanted Ji Ruan to feel more natural sunlight.
The yellow roses that were just delivered this morning are placed in a glass vase in front of the windowsill, bathing in the sunshine and looking gorgeous.
Compared to Rose, Ji Ruan's face looked much more bleak.
He lay on his side on the hospital bed, his fingers loosely resting on the edge of the bed. The back of his hand was blue and purple from the indwelling needle that had been inserted for so long.
Gu Xiuyi took a few steps closer and saw clearly that Ji Ruan's eyes were lightly closed. Her long eyelashes covered her eyelids, and her pale skin created a small shadow.
He pulled up his trouser legs and sat down on the chair in front of the bed. Ji Ruan didn't react at all, probably because he couldn't hear any sounds around him.
The consequence of poor hearing is the loss of a large part of the perception of the outside world. Even though Ji Ruan was lying in bed, absolutely safely protected, his brows were still slightly furrowed.
Gu Xiuyi unconsciously reached out and touched Ji Ruan's eyebrows, then rubbed his cheek. Ji Ruan paused for a moment and slowly opened his eyes.
The two were very close to each other, and Gu Xiuyi clearly saw the fatigue in Ji Ruan's eyes gradually melt away, and was filled with a warm smile, like ice cream melting under the scorching sun, dripping and dripping, and when it fell on his hand, it was melted even more transparent by the warmth of his fingertips.
He supported Ji Ruan's neck to expose his left ear, then lay on the edge of the bed with his chin resting on Ji Ruan's pillow.
Ji Ruan had dressings and bandages on his surgical wound, which gave his originally fragrant pillow a medical smell, but Gu Xiuyi felt reassured when he smelled it.
He tapped Ji Ruan's nose: "Does the wound still hurt?"
It was very painful at first.
Ji Ruan's physique was much more sensitive than that of ordinary people. After waking up, his body and brain didn't have time to react before the pain came up first, making him sweat coldly in an instant. Unfortunately, he was unable to move at that time and could only endure it.
It was not until Li Suian gave him an injection of painkiller that the severe pain that threatened to split his brain in half gradually subsided, and now he is unconscious.
The skin behind his ears was stiff and numb. It was a very strange feeling, like being pressed down by a heavy wooden board. He could feel the pain screaming inside, but due to obstruction it had to be suppressed and turned into a surge of numbness.
Ji Ruan sniffed, and consciously acted like a spoiled child, rubbing the back of Gu Xiuyi's hand: "It doesn't hurt anymore, but it's not comfortable either. How about you kiss me?"
Gu Xiuyi hadn't felt Ji Ruan's lively coquettishness for several days, and his heartbeat was difficult to control. He held Ji Ruan's chin, leaned over and kissed her two pale lips, then deftly penetrated between them.
But Ji Ruan had just woken up from a coma, and worry and caution firmly suppressed his throbbing emotions. The moment he felt Ji Ruan's breathing become disordered, Gu Xiuyi stopped.
"Are you short of breath?" He looked at Ji Ruan's face nervously. When he didn't get a response within two or three seconds, his alarm bells rang and he reached out to press the bell.
Ji Ruan opened her lips slightly, her eyelashes trembling, and she took a deep breath to calm her breathing. When she opened her eyes, she saw Gu Xiuyi's frightened look.
He curved his eyebrows and laughed softly.
Gu Xiuyi's hand that was pressing the bell was suspended in the air, his frightened heart had not yet calmed down. When he saw Ji Ruan's smile, his heart sank again, as if his emotions were completely out of his control.
Ji Ruan tied an invisible rope around his heart. He was a puppet being controlled. All Ji Ruan had to do was move his fingers to control his every move and thought.
Gu Xiuyi, however, thought in a very unpromising way that this was fine.
Knowing that Aunt Zhao was coming to deliver food, Ji Ruan asked Gu Xiuyi to pick him up and let him sit for a while while he tidied up. He didn't want the old lady to see his haggard and miserable appearance.
Gu Xiuyi put his arm around Ji Ruan's shoulders, held his waist tightly with one hand, and slowly and steadily helped him half sit up and lean against his arms.
But even though Gu Xiuyi's movements were slow enough to be considered cautious, Ji Ruan's eyes were still spinning, with white light flashing one moment and darkness the next.
Ji Ruan knew that he might experience dizziness and nausea after the operation before entering the operating room, but he didn't expect it to be so uncomfortable.
It felt like there was a stone blocking his chest. As the nausea continued to surge up, it blocked all five senses. For a moment, Ji Ruan even felt that he had difficulty breathing.
Gu Xiuyi seemed to have expected this. He skillfully supported the back of Ji Ruan's head and lifted it slightly to help him breathe. He then fed him two sips of warm water and then gently massaged his acupoints. His series of movements were orderly and smooth, and he was even more gentle and considerate than an experienced caregiver.
It’s not that Gu Xiuyi is particularly talented in taking care of patients, but during the few days that Ji Ruan was in a coma, he had a lot of blank time except for handling some work and nagging in Ji Ruan's ear.
In order to prevent himself from being driven crazy by the oppression of emptiness, he directed his criticism at every medical staff member who entered the ward, asking them for advice on how to recover after the operation.
Through repetition of a large amount of theoretical knowledge and unremitting research, Mr. Gu has engraved "how to provide gentle postoperative care" into his DNA.
After making sure that Ji Ruan had recovered, Gu Xiuyi washed Ji Ruan's face with a hot towel.
The hot and soft towel covered her, gradually bringing some color to Ji Ruan's pale cheeks. Her eyelashes were moist, her eyes were watery, and her cheeks were lightly pink, making her look like a freshly washed peach.
Gu Xiuyi couldn't let go and kissed her twice.
Aunt Zhao came late with a thermos bucket in her hand. As soon as she entered the door, she took Ji Ruan's hand and wiped her tears, saying repeatedly: "You've lost weight."
She looked down and saw the purple back of Ji Ruan's hand, and felt even more distressed: "How much suffering has our little Ruan suffered..."
Gu Xiuyi supported her elbow and said, "Please sit down for a while and calm down. Don't be anxious."
Aunt Zhao realized belatedly that crying was pointless. She wiped her face to hold back her tears and started to take apart the thermos bucket. "We can't prepare anything good for the first meal. You can only have some millet porridge. Ruan Ruan, just make do with it. After two days, if the doctor gives the OK, I'll make you something delicious."
She knew that Ji Ruan's hearing was not very good now, so she spoke every word very slowly, while looking at Ji Ruan's expression to make sure he could hear clearly.
Ji Ruan smiled with eyes curved into crescents: "Okay, but I love everything Aunt Zhao cooks."
Aunt Zhao became happy when she talked to Ji Ruan. Before she had even finished crying, laughter started to overflow from the corners of her mouth. Her whole face looked a little funny with both crying and laughing.
She glanced at Ji Ruan in a reproachful manner: "You have smeared honey on your little mouth, child."
Ji Ruan leaned on Gu Xiuyi and smiled again, and Gu Xiuyi pinched her chin and kissed her.
In order to prevent the little ancestor at home from going hungry, Aunt Zhao quickened her movements and poured out a small half bowl of porridge, which was steaming in the porcelain bowl with its fragrant and glutinous texture.
She scooped a little with a spoon and brought it to Ji Ruan's mouth, coaxing a child: "Come, ah——"
Gu Xiuyi covered his lips and coughed, then glanced at the bowl of porridge and then at Aunt Zhao.
Aunt Zhao was stunned for half a second before she reacted and smiled embarrassedly: "Oh, look at me, then you feed Xiao Gu."
Having said that, she was obviously reluctant to hand over the bowl and spoon.
Gu Xiuyi ignored the old lady's complaint, as if accusing him of being too stubborn and not wanting her to help him feed her. He blew on the spoon and fed it to Ji Ruan: "Come on, baby, eat slowly."
God knows he has been waiting for the opportunity to be fed for a long time. Even though Aunt Zhao is his elder, he would not give her up.
Ji Ruan obediently opened his mouth, took it in, chewed it carefully for a few bites and then slowly swallowed it into his stomach.
An old man and a young man beside the bed were looking at him nervously. Ji Ruan's stomach was not in good condition. He had been sick several times in a row and the medication had made it worse. He was afraid that he would feel uncomfortable when eating for the first time after the operation.
But seeing that Ji Ruan looked normal and even licked his lips after taking a bite and asked for a second bite, the two of them breathed a sigh of relief.
Aunt Zhao took a few steps back and sat beside the bed, watching Gu Xiuyi feeding Ji Ruan and wiping his mouth, she felt sad but also happy.
Having someone around you who can always touch your heart may be a kind of shackle, and sometimes you may feel powerless, but this is life, isn't it?
It's not about being born and living, but about being born with hope and living with passionate love.
Aunt Zhao patted her thigh and began to chatter about recent events, such as the hasty ending of Gu Changyun's funeral, her good friend Afang's diabetes was under control, Han Xiaolin had been clamoring to come and see Ji Ruan, and she calmed down a bit after knowing that the young nurse had been transferred because she put one of his counterfeit products in there, and so on.
By the time she had finished talking, Ji Ruan had finished half of his bowl of porridge. Aunt Zhao was so happy to see this that she took the bowl happily and promised to make him porridge with fish meat tomorrow.
Gu Xiuyi sent Aunt Zhao to the door, and when he turned back, he saw Ji Ruan leaning over the edge of the bed and retching into the trash can.
He spat out a small portion of the porridge he had eaten, and his knuckles turned white when he wiped his mouth with a napkin.
Gu Xiuyi's heart ached. He suppressed his heartache and strode forward to hold him in his arms, helping him rinse his mouth with warm water.
He put his palm on Ji Ruan's stomach and rubbed it gently: "Are you uncomfortable when you eat? Why don't you say it?"
In fact, I felt a lot better after vomiting, and the big stone that had been blocking my heart was gone.
Ji Ruan shook his head: "It was okay at that time, maybe I was too happy and accidentally ate a little too much..."
He smiled and suddenly looked at Gu Xiuyi: "Don't tell Aunt Zhao."
After all, the old lady doesn't have many hobbies. What makes her happiest every day is seeing Ji Ruan eat up all the food she cooks. If she knew that Ji Ruan vomited, she would definitely feel guilty and sad, and she would even find ways to study new recipes out of pity for Ji Ruan.
Gu Xiuyi felt sad: "I know."
He carefully held Ji Ruan's stomach, wishing he could find a magic pill to make Ji Ruan jump for life immediately, but he also knew that gastrointestinal problems could not be rushed, and there was no other way except to take care of him slowly.
Ji Ruan could feel the depressed mood around him and he looked up to meet Gu Xiuyi's painful gaze.
"Gu Xiuyi." He tapped Gu Xiuyi's furrowed brows.
"What's up baby?"
A light smile spread across Ji Ruan's eyes, floating like a feather in Gu Xiuyi's heart:
"I want to eat cherries."
All the complicated thoughts in Gu Xiuyi's mind disappeared instantly because of this smile.
He grabbed Ji Ruan's wrist and kissed her: "Okay."
