Chapter 279 New Style Carriage

The reason why Zhao Hao wanted Lin Run to see a doctor was because he remembered that Lin Run would die in office in the third year of Longqing.

In the third year of Longqing, Lin Runcai was only 39 years old, so he should have died of illness. So he proposed to Lin Zhongcheng to seek medical treatment based on the principle of early examination, early detection and early treatment.

But Lin Run was too busy to see a doctor, so he had no choice but to wait for Lin Run to leave Songjiang and then ask Wan Mi Zhai to see the doctor.

What, what year is this?

Mr. Zhao's motorcade left the governor's office and went up Shuyuan Lane.

The Governor's Office was named so because its predecessor was the Heshan Academy during the Song and Yuan Dynasties.

Ordinarily, this street should be named Fushuqian Street or Fuyuanqian Street, but the people of Suzhou have been stubborn and have not changed the name, as if they were expressing their disobedience in this way.

Young Master Zhao's carriage was moving slowly on the cobblestone road. It was much more comfortable than an ordinary carriage because it was a four-wheeled carriage equipped with tires.

The tires were solid tires that Zhang Zai used Eucommia gum to vulcanize directly on the rims. After the carriage was equipped with this kind of tires, the vibration and noise during driving were greatly reduced, and the comfort was greatly improved.

But in fact, what was even more revolutionary was the wheel structure of the carriage.

Ninety-nine percent of Ming Dynasty carriages were two-wheeled. This is because the Ming Dynasty's four-wheeled carriages simply assembled four wheels on the frame, and the two front wheels could not turn left and right.

This kind of four-wheeled carriage is OK when driving on a straight road. But once it turns, it must be pulled by more animals to complete the turn, so it is naturally not as practical as a two-wheeled carriage with flexible steering.

Therefore, at this time, four-wheeled trucks were extremely rare, and four-wheeled carriages for people only appeared on ceremonial occasions.

But the stability, comfort and carrying capacity of a four-wheeled carriage are unmatched by a two-wheeled carriage.

So how can we make the four-wheeled carriage turn flexibly?

Zhao Hao told Zhang Zai that in fact this problem was not difficult at all. All he needed to do was to install the front two wheels of the carriage on one frame and the rear two wheels on another frame, and then connect the front and rear frames with a vertical axle.

In fact, it is a combination of two two-wheeled vehicles. The eternal problem of "four-wheeled vehicle steering" has been cleverly solved.

In addition to the 'bogie', Mr. Zhao also 'invented' the 'shock absorber'.

The traditional carriage is made by placing two pieces of wood at the bottom of the carriage and tying the axle to it with ropes. The shape of the wood is like a crawling rabbit, so it is called "Crawling Rabbit".

Futu separates the axle from the carriage, playing a certain role in shock absorption.

Zhao Hao asked Gao the blacksmith to buckle two bow-shaped low-carbon Su steel plates together, and a primitive "steel plate shock absorber" was completed. He used it to replace Futu, and the effect was immediate.

With the help of rubber tires, steering gears and shock absorbers, Master Zhao finally single-handedly caught up with and surpassed the contemporary Europe in vehicle manufacturing level, reaching the world's leading level.

Sitting in the new carriage with thick sound-proof carpet and comfortable soft seats, Mr. Zhao felt almost like he was sitting in a car.

Although this car only has two horsepower, it still makes him feel extremely satisfied.

When Mr. Zhao has reached such a level of wealth, the threshold for his enjoyment becomes higher and higher.

Things that ordinary people enjoy immensely or even cannot enjoy are simple, boring and tedious in his eyes.

Only the treatment that others cannot enjoy and is unique in the world can make him regain genuine joy.

Young Master Zhao was sitting comfortably on a soft chair covered with sapphire velvet and filled with natural sponge, holding a transparent tall glass in his hand, and from time to time he would lazily glance at the scarlet... pomegranate juice swaying slightly in the glass.

More often than not, he would look through the glass lathe at the busy people on the street.

That was the shopkeeper calling out to his assistants to clean up the messy shop; that was the carpenters and painters repairing the damaged doors, windows and counters; that was the weavers carrying bags of raw silk and rushing to the workshop...

It's almost October. If we don't start working quickly and make up for the lost time, how will we have money to celebrate the New Year?

Looking at the city of Suzhou that had regained its order and vitality, Master Zhao felt a strong sense of satisfaction in his heart.

This is all thanks to me. He raised his glass gently, toasting the busy citizens on the street.

"No need to thank me, just work hard for me."

On the street, citizens were busy looking at this cool convoy and talking sourly:

"This carriage is different. It has four wheels."

"Shao Bao, aren't two enough?"

"It's such a grand occasion. I wonder which family's master is going out?"

"I haven't seen it before. This convoy looks very unfamiliar."

"They are all rich dogs anyway, bah!" The citizens vented their remaining anger towards the convoy that was parading through the city.

"Pooh!"

"Pooh!"

"Pah, pah, pah!"

Fortunately, the carriage was soundproofed and Master Zhao didn’t hear it, otherwise he would have been heartbroken.

So Mr. Zhao was able to maintain his cheerful mood and came back to Lengxiang Garden on Panmen Inner Street.

This is Jiang Xueying's garden. Its name "Lengxiang" comes from Ma Zhiyuan's "Rose dew, lotus leaf rain, cold fragrance of frost".

Wu Ji’s headquarters is in Suzhou. Jiang Xueying spends most of the year here. It is no exaggeration to say that this is her home.

Zhao Hao hasn't bought a house in Suzhou yet. He will stay in the city for a few days, so he originally planned to let Gao Wu go to Bao's Inn.

But Sister Jiang strongly invited him to live in Lengxiang Garden, and Mr. Zhao could not refuse, so he had to agree to her request.

This garden is not too big, covering an area of 'only' eight acres and three fen, but it excels in its ingenious layout, making the scenery change as if one is walking in a painting.

After entering the garden from the west gate, you will see the flower hall for entertaining guests. The interior is bright and simple. With finely carved wenge wood lattice windows, you can have a glimpse of the exquisite beauty of plum, bamboo, banana and rockery in the small garden behind the hall.

After passing the rockery, the true essence of Lengxiang Garden came into view. In the center of the garden was a clear pool, surrounded by rockery, long corridors, waterside pavilions, and terraces.

Long corridors and waterside pavilions are built around the pond. Looking north across the bank, you can see winding corridors and willow trees. In the west is a cluster of pavilions for the owner to live in. They all have long glass windows and the halls are high and spacious, which looks very grand. This is very rare in other Suzhou gardens.

The terrace in front of the hall is wide and close to the pond. It is also connected to an ancient nine-curve stone bridge.

Under the guidance of the maid, Zhao Hao walked along the stone bridge and came to the two-story pavilion in the middle of the pool.

There was a plaque with the words "Shuiyun Pavilion" hanging on the lintel of the pavilion.

On the couplets on both sides of the door are the lines of Su Da Huzi's poem "The plain is rippling with water and clouds, the small building is sunny and windy."

Young Master Zhao then walked into the building.

The pavilion is covered with gauze curtains, and is equipped with bookshelves, antique shelves, incense burners, desks, piano tables, and chess scales.

And three cute girls.

ps. I almost went blind while searching for information today, and as a result, I haven’t finished writing the third chapter yet, so I’ll post the first two chapters.
